UPCOMING ACTIVITIES FOR OCTOBER 2019

!

October 9th, Wednesday: Explore the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth Did you know there is a museum in West Yarmouth that houses the largest collection of pirate artifacts recovered from a single shipwreck anywhere in the world! The Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth officially opened its doors to the public in June of 2016….and many of us have never been there.

Built within the existing structure of the old Zooquarium, the West Yarmouth museum contains multiple exhibit wings, the bell theater room, a walk-through partial replica of the Whydah Galley, a gift shop and bookstore, and the Sea-Lab and Learning Center—the museum’s onsite conservation laboratory. The museum is a state-of-the-art facility with LED theater lighting, flat screen displays, and surround sound speakers.

Please see their website https://www.discoverpirates.com/about-us/ for more information.

Let’s meet for lunch at Captain Parker’s Pub at 11:30 am before going to the Whydah as a group at around 1 pm. The ticket price for the museum will be $12 per person for 15 or more. (If you want to meet at the museum and not have lunch, that’s fine!) Please let us know if you will be joining the group for lunch so a reservation can be made.

SAVE THE DATES

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6: Ready for some history of our great capital? We'll board the train in Kingston, ride to South Station and visit Faneuil Hall at 11:00 a.m. for the history and the story of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, chartered in 1638 to train officers for the Massachusetts Militia, a role which it filled until 1912. After lunch we'll walk over to the State House for a 2:30 p.m. tour. Transportation plans and more details will follow in the November newsletter, but plan for a full day.

Contact [email protected] with questions.

Faneuil Hall: The Cradle of Liberty. For 275 years, Faneuil Hall remains a site of meetings, protests, and debate right up to this very day. Because Revolutionary-era meetings and protests took place so frequently at the hall, successive generations continued to gather at the Hall in their own struggles over the meaning and legacy of American liberty. Abolitionists, women's suffragists, and labor unionists name just the largest of groups who have held protests, meetings, and debates at Faneuil Hall.

NOVEMBER 12, TUESDAY: From ED COLLUPY: Please join us at our Fall Speaker’s Gathering on Tuesday November 12that the British Beer Company in Sandwich. We’ll gather at 6:30pm and the talk will begin at 7pm.

Dean Coe, a Sandwich resident, is the author of children’s picture books featuring the adventures of Chesterton, a good natured ever curious weasel living on Cape Cod. The collection includes: Chesterton Keeps His Town Jumping, Chesterton Saves the Whale, and others. They can be purchased at the Sandwich Arts Alliance, Sandwich Glass Museum, Titcomb’s and online at https://deancoebooks.com/books/. I’m sure if you bring along a copy, he will sign it for you. During our time together Dean will talk about his love of writing and we’ll hear about his latest endeavor in writing a chapter book. Dean accepted an award at this year’s Sandwich Arts Alliance on behalf of the Sandwich Kiwanis which he’ll talk about the work they do. And I’m sure, as time permits, we’ll hear some tales about kayaking and being an Airbnb host.

DECEMBER 8, SUNDAY:

Tickets are still available for those who would like to join us at the Cape Symphony Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 8 at 5PM. Our seats are in the Orchestra Center Section, Rows E and F, and are $55.80 each (group sales rate). For those who have already reserved seats with Beth Houlihan, your money is due by November 11. Bob Hope’s televised Christmas Shows for troops overseas were a tradition of America’s holiday season. The Cape symphony is putting its own version of the famous comedian’s variety show right here on Cape Cod, including crooner John Stevens singing the songs of Bing Crosby.

We count our blessings – including our friends the Chatham Chorale – and feel grateful for the opportunity to celebrate together. Our annual tradition warms the heart and starts the holiday season. Come home for the holidays with the Cape Symphony.

Jung-Ho Pak, Conductor

The Chatham Chorale, Joseph Marchio, Music Director

PROFILE: ROSI HOLCOMBE Rosi loves being actively engaged, being part of a community, and participating in projects with neighbors and friends. She has a long history of service to fellow groups and, amazingly, with groups around the world. She has had leadership roles in American groups in Saudi Arabia, Paris, Dubai, and London. She has learned to co-exist with all types and kinds of people. But, wait a mInute. Let’s start at the beginning.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, she grew up as a southern belle…living for her first eight years in Gadsden, Alabama. She then moved to Rockford, Illinois with her parents, grandparents, and brother and sister. She loved her Swedish neighbourhood and was an active high schooler. At the last minute she enrolled at Iowa State University, having never visited Ames, IA. After graduation in Child Development, she moved to Denver, CO where she taught in the new national Head Start Program. Even though Rosi enjoyed Denver and skiing, she did not enjoy teaching. In another last minute move, Rosi returned to Ames to get a Masters in Child Development.

After grad school she moved to Houston because they had the most days of sunshine and the most eligible young men. Rosi worked as the Child Developmentalist on an interdisciplinary team diagnosing and treating children with developmental disabilities at Texas Children’s Hospital. She loved the work but didn’t care much for the sunny days or the guys, who called her “an independent Yankee chick.” She was young and decided she would like Illinois better. Without a job, she moved to Chicago to seek her fortune. She found a job with… Marshall Field as a salesclerk… not exactly what she had in mind. Eventually she landed a job in a regional Mental Health Center as Child & Adolescent Coordinator. She conducted home visits, emergency interventions, and coordinated intakes to State inpatient facilities. And then she met Bill, an expert on street drugs and they worked together doing family therapy. After marriage they started a family, first Will and then Bethany. Rosi stayed at home.

Page 18: OCTOBER 2019 NL FInal · RSVP to Candice Murphy murphyrc6@comcast.net by Monday, October 7th. OCTOBER 15, TUESDAY: The Book Club will meet Tuesday, October 15 at 1:00 pm at the home

Next they moved to St. Louis where Rosi worked as a Parent Educator in the public schools. After Bill worked for a few years with McDonnell Douglas, they got the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia. Rosi loved her life, living with the family in a Western compound. She and the family had time to travel and vacation in Europe, Thailand, and points East. Then they moved back to St. Louis. And then they moved some more—to Paris with the kids and a dog. From there she was off to Paris to Dubai to Connecticut to London with and without children and dog. Rosi was active with American families adjusting to overseas assignments and made many friends from the expat community Rosi loves playing tennis, bridge and having a beautiful garden (not working in the garden). Having washed ashore on Cape Cod, she loves making new friends, doing a little bit of everything, and helping old friends explore the wonders of the Cape.

MEMORIES I COULD HAVE AND SHOULD HAVE …

Reflecting back across time I wish I had done so many other things.I played tennis and skied in the winter. It would have been great to be a champion.I played the guitar and sang in choirs.I would have been great to be a top performer.I studied all sorts of subjects.I would have been great to be a Harvard scholar. Now, what did I actually accomplish? First and foremost I became a decent, thoughtful guy.I married a great gal and we raised two fine sons.Carol and I have been married 50 years.I earned a doctorate degree and became a successful professor.I worked with hundreds of community groups as they improved their home towns.I authored and co-authored publications used throughout the country. My students are spread out across the US and world doing important work. So, when one Sandwich elected official questioned the validity Of a new study I produced, it was a slap in the face. We old, retired people do not always get respect.Could it be that I am not in Kansas anymore?David L. Darling
