But in the Carolinas peo- ple had real reason to fear in the crosshairs of Hurricane Florence in mid-September. We worried about the safety of Eva Nagy, Frank Sípos, Brenda Mallaber, Judith Rédei Intrator, their loved ones who braved the elements. Thank God, all are safe. *** A get well wish to Andy Süveges Sr., and Peter Teremy, both hospitalized. Tom Matthews of Clyde, NY is recovering from painful shingles. Recently widowed John Krar is a renal patient in Boca Raton, FL. He was visited by László & Edit Kelemen, of Hévíz, Hungary, during their Florida vacation. John is the father of Frank Krar, Parkland, FL HS teacher, whose courageous conduct we featured in the Summer Letter. ***Judy & Andy Borbás escaped to Alaska, Portugal, and Spain, as their FB selfies imply. Thanks to our enthusiastic volunteers; servers:Rosemary Darrow, June Végh, Elizabeth Stefany; on the grill: Andy Süveges, Géza Kovács; bartenders: Frank Teremy, Attila Nagy, all of whom did a fine job. Special thanks to Bert Végh, who surprised us with an impressive portion of homemade sausages, stuffed cabbage and pastries. Raffle was tastefully handled by Nia Stefany and Carmen Teremy Isner. Like most conflicts, it simply shifted power from vanquished to victor, disintegrating old em- pires while creating new ones. In this context alone, it was insane. At the end no one re- membered how it begun and the Spanish Flu, a world-wide epidemic soon wiped out more people than the four years of warfare. Things were much worse along the Eastern Front, where the real chaos had just begun. Exhausted Russia fell to the Bolsheviks, a new Horseman of the Apocalypse, Com- munism was born. Hungary was in the midst of all this. Having nothing to gain from war, PM Count István Tisza was the only dissenting voice to the Emperor’s declaration in 1914. Alas, in matters of foreign policy, Hungary was not sovereign. Once the die was cast, however, we fought shoulder-to- shoulder. Had our quest for independence in 1848-49 succeed, things would’ve been different. When the victors arrived in late 1918, our worst nightmare of losing an entire country had just begun. So we mourn, rather than celebrate on Armistice Day, but we understand the context was different in the West and bow with respect. . ; {lali}

Kedves Napló! ***Mi rochesteriek szeretünk panaszkodni, bármilyen áldott ég nézzen ránk. A Karolinákban viszont valódi égszakadás sújtott szeptember közepén, amikor Nagy Éva, Sípos Feri, Mallaber Brenda, Rédei Intrator Jutka és szeretteik épsége miatt aggódtunk. Régen az efféle elemi csapásokat az égiek okozták, manapság pedig azon közéleti személyiségek, akiket nem szeretünk. ***Jobbulást kívánunk Süveges Endre, és Teremy Péter tagtársainknak. Közelmúltban özvegyült Krár János, volt spencerporti, ma Boca Raton, FL lakost meglátogatták Kelemen László és Edit, vakációjuk alkalmával. ***Borbás Andris és Judit utazási kedve idén sem lankadt, bizonyítják ezt alaszkai, portugál, és spanyolföldi szelfi képeik. Hála az Internetnek, ami a képeslap hasonmását olcsóbbá varázsolta. Valamikor egy képeslapot meg kellet venni, címezni, bélyeggel ellátni, mindezt az illető ország aprópénzével, amiért pénzváltó bódét kellett keresni, ott sorba állni. ***Az őszi gereblyézés közben vigyázzunk a derekunkra. {lali}
Elnöki sarok: Kedves Tagtársak, Barátaim! Július 29-i piknikünk az Ellison Park fáinak kellemes árnyékában zajlott, háziasszony Háry Bea, és háznagy Fortuber Miklós már előző nap felkészültek, szorgos önkéntesek segítségével. Bea felszolgáló csapata: Stefany Erzsi, Darrow Rosemary, Végh June és Teremy Csiki kellemes zene mellett készen állt. A sütést Miklós vezette, Süveges Andy és Kovács Géza segédletével, miközben a söntést Teremy Feri és Nagy Attila rendez-ték. Köszönjük Végh Bercinek, aki meglepett bennünket egy nagy adag házi kolbásszal, hurkával, töltött káposztával és süteménnyel. Jó volt látni két fiatal hölgyünk Chicky és Nia közreműködését a tombola intézésében. Szeretném megemlíteni az év hátralevő programját: emlékünnepélyünk október 21-én, du. 2:00 órakor, a Cutler Unionban, kévé és sütemény mellett; majd évzáró ebédünk november 11-én, du. 1:30 kezdettel, a Burgundy Basin Inn termében, $10 tag, $15 nem tag vendégeknek, helyfoglalás szükséges. A nagy verekedés vége {"Tárd ki a karjaid a változásnak,

Száz éve, hogy a nyugati fronton elhallgattak a fegyverek. Az eseményt lelkes örömmel üdvözölte a kimerült világ, négy évi öldöklés után, amikor már senki nem emlékezett hogy is kezdődött, itt volt az ideje abbahagyni. Az akkor Nagy háború néven ismert eszméletlen vérontás egy teljes nemzedéket küldött a halálba, milliókat tett hontalanná, földön-futóvá, majd porondra tette a kommunizmust, mint utó-átkot. A hamarosan kitört spanyol nátha, a középkori fekete halál óta nem tapasztalt világ-járványként tarolt, ahol az áldozatok száma meghaladta a háborúban elpusztul-takét.
A keleti fronton merőben más volt a helyzet. Nálunk a háború nem volt érdek, ezt gróf Tisza István annakidején a császár elé is vitte. Sajnos külügy terén Magyarország nem volt szuverén. Feltétel-ezhető, hogy ha 1848-49-es szabadságharcunk sikeres, a
Nagy háborút – ala Svédország — el tud-tuk volna kerülni. Sajnos nyakig benne voltunk, és a magyar ember kálváriája a fegyver-szünet napján koránt sem ért véget. A győzők érkezésével csak nőtt a káosz. A félig elvérzett Hazát egyszerre lepték el belső és külső
haramia férgek. Fejünk felett összecsaptak a hullámok, csoda, hogy egyáltalán megmaradtunk. Ezért nekünk nehéz telt szívvel koccintani Armistice Day emlékére, számunkra nem hozott ajándékot. Ugyanakkor megértjük mások örömét, akikhez más tartalommal jutott, és tiszteletből mi is fejet hajtunk. . {lali}
