Senior Dan Council Member

Anthony Woodward, Godan

One day, back in 1990, I was looking through the Durham College course catalogue and saw an advertisement for karate. I signed-up, and began my karate experience with Sensei José-Carlos Garcia. Right from the beginning I had a sense of belonging and enjoyed the camaraderie among all of the other students, becoming fast friends with many of the karate-kas.

The reason I wanted to join karate was because when I was a young boy my father was involved in Judo, and I always wanted to get my black belt just like my dad. Over the years, I trained at Durham College under the excellent guidance of Sensei Garcia, along with the many black belts and kyu belts I met. One of my proudest moments was receiving my first dan in 1995, being presented my black belt by Sensei Manara with my parents watching and beaming with pride.

I was also interested in Shindo and trained extensively with Sensei Garcia. I started my training by attending a Shindo seminar with Sensei Shintani. I even did a Shindo demonstration at the Oshawa Centre in front of the Eatons store!

Throughout the years, I have been happy to introduce my family to karate, including my daughter, my sister, nephews, and my cousins.

When I started karate in 1990 I was working for the Town of Whitby and I continue to work for the Town of Whitby as an Animal Control Officer.

In 1999, I moved to Sensei Ron Sheyan’s dojo in Brooklin. I had trained with Sensei Sheyan for many years at Durham College. I very much enjoyed the club Sensei Sheyan had established and it quickly became home for me. At the Brooklin club I met Heather Cant, and we married in Las Vegas in 2009.

A funny story – Heather’s dad, who had yet to meet my parents, attended one of our annual outdoor Heber Down classes, and wondered who the “old-guy” was beating up Anthony – it was my dad! He still had his martial arts intensity, years after retiring!

Last year, I was presented the Shintani Award; I was very honoured to receive this award.

In January 2018, Heather and I became the club leaders of the Brooklin Family Karate, taking over the dojo from Sensei Sheyan after his semi-retirement. It was important to us to see the Brooklin dojo continue to thrive and to foster the healthy club that Sensei had established.

We are proud of the community we have at Brooklin Family Karate and all of the wonderful students we have here!

MONDAY AND

Greetings and Happy Fall to fellow Karate-kas, from ALL at Clarington Wado-Kai!

Hearty congratulations to the following students from Clarington Wado-Kai who ranked in July 2018. Keep up the hard work! Our thanks to ALL of the Ranking Board!

With Sensei Weldon Zabizewski, holding their new ranks (L to R): Doug Backwell (2nd Dan), Robin Singh (3rd Dan), Devon Singh (2nd Dan), Benjamin Singh (3rd Dan), David Hua (1st Dan)

On September 19th, 2018 Sensei José-Carlos Garcia, 7th Dan, visited Clarington Wado-Kai. His visit was most welcome! Sensei Jose-Carlos first gave us a brief overview of the Wado-Kai lineage, and of one of his encounters with Sensei Masaru Shintani. He then conducted us through exercises in developing speed of movements and techniques, concluding the latter half of the class with pressure points to control an opponent and bring them to the ground. Thank you, Sensei José-Carlos!

From the TWKK Talent Pool

Karate File: Mike Bittman, Shodan

Sensei Randy James contacted Robb Dods about the idea of highlighting the talents of our TWKK students. ‘One of my students,’ wrote Randy, ‘attended a college in Ontario. This past year, one of his classes was a Film-ology course. An assignment was to create a 15-minute film; and no surprise, Mike pulled together a fun, good-versus-evil Martial Arts film.’ Sensei Robb asked Mike to tell us about his background.

Mike: My Karate/martial arts journey started at age 7. My physiotherapist recommended that I either take horseback riding lessons or martial arts to correct a ‘gross motor coordination delay’ at the age of 5. Considering the expense involved in horseback riding lessons, my parents opted for marital arts and, thus, my journey began!

I started with Taekwondo, alongside my twin brother, Luke, who has been my training partner ever since. We switched to Wado-Kai Karate at age ten, joining my uncle who is now Bishop (Sensei) Greg Bittman, and two older brothers. After ten consecutive years of training at the Edmonton Wado-Kai Karate Club, I achieved the rank of Shodan.

I’m a History major with a Christian Theology Minor at the University of Alberta and will finish my undergraduate studies this upcoming school year. Last year I attended the Liberal Arts Program at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College in Barry’s Bay, Ontario to round off my education with Philosophy and Scripture study.

In between an intensive academic schedule and spurts of Karate training, I got a taste of film-making when a friend asked me to play a role in his short film. That experience was the spark that lead me to join the college’s Filmmaking Club in second semester. What initially started as musings about making a Karate film eventually turned into reality. It was a fun, challenging and creative process of translating my knowledge and technical expertise of karate into a story. The whole process was akin to planning and teaching a karate class, with the addition of collaborating with my cast and crew, organizing and acquiring camera gear, choreographing scenes, practicing basic skills, and other tasks to complete the film.

Enjoy the film: https://youtu.be/WtPukMYJE00
