Deur die Voorsitter se Bril

Dit is met ‘n bietjie hartseer wat ek hierdie brief vanmiddag skryf. My verkose termyn as voorsitter het tot ‘n einde gekom en ek het besluit om myself nie weer verkiesbaar te stel vir die SKOMK se komitee nie. Ek wil graag ‘n kursus doen by ons kerk en dit gaan baie van my tyd in beslag neem en omdat ek glo dat elke komiteelid net sy beste moet doen is ek oortuig dat ek dit nie sal kan doen vir 2019 nie. Ek vertrou dat my opvolger die voorsitter se stuurwiel koersvas sal vashou en die SKOMK na nuwe hoogtes sal lei. I have recently spoken to Jack Boshoff, our club patron, that has fallen ill during the Ford tour in February this year and has been in and out of ICU numerous times and I am very pleased to report that he is out of his wheelchair and walking “to the gate” every morning with only the support of a cane. As Peter, his son, has put it “ Danie my dad is on the mend”. I believe that it’s the prayers of all our members and all his friends that caused this miracle to happen when the doctors tried with a different approach at every setback that hit him. He is currently with his daughter, Debbie in Grahamstown but we are looking forward to see Jack at our regular club outings again soon. The work on our Bedford Fire engine is at full speed and the new engine has been started. We are currently having the wiring redone and hope to take her out for a decent road test soon. There have been many challenges and only to mention one, the change from a mechanical clutch to a hydraulic clutch, has proved that Herman Neethling and his team is doing a superb job. Reëlings vir die 2019 George Oumotorskou is volstoom aan die gang en ek wil graag ‘n beroep doen op al ons lede om asseblief betrokke te raak by ons grootste jaarlikse klubuitstappie. Ons benodig nog baie vrywilligers en selfs al kan jy net n uur of 2 van jou tyd afstaan wil ons jou verseker dat ons dit regtig baie nodig het. Praat met enige komiteelid om jou hulp aan te bied.

A word from the Editor

As the year is drawing to a close things seem to happening faster! There are so many activities going on in our club that there is never a dull moment. The highlight for me so far being the past Heritage Tour to the West Coast. However two very important events are almost upon us. Our Year End Function takes place on Saturday 24 November 2018 and the AGM takes place on Saturday 1 December 2018. These two events have now been organised on different days. Prepare yourself for a great evening of entertainment at the Year End Function. Please also make an effort to attend the AGM a week later. New committee members must be elected and important decisions need to be made. This cannot be done without your attendance. Ons klub het ‘n WhatsApp groep gestig waar lede met mekaar kan komunikeer. Hier kan inligting maklik versprei word soos om mekaar te verwittig van ‘n siek klublid of ‘n spontane rit met oumotors vir ontbyt of self raad oor waar om ‘n part vir jou motor te bekom. Laat weet my indien u ook deel van hierdie groep wil wees. On het vasgestel dat sommige lede RSVP deur direk te antwoord op die SMS wat uitgetsuur word. Ons vra dat u asb. nie die sisteem

This edition contains the first of a series of informative articles written by Philip Kuschke, our SAVVA representative and also vice chairman of SAVVA, on what SAVAA means to us as club members – some good reading! Dit sal ook ‘n groot besparing op drukkoste meebring. Ons vra ook dat u asb. die klub laat weet indien u selnommer of e-posadres verander. Daar is heelwat lede waarvoor ons geen selnommer of e-posadres het nie. Hierdie inligting vergemaklik komunikasie baie. Happy motoring

Year-end function – 24th November 2018 James Bond 007 – Licenced to kill……..I am sure that we all have fond memories of this movie legend. This year, our year-end Dinner/Dance will feature the 007 theme, so get dressed smartly and come and join in the fun! It will again be held at the King George Protea Hotel. They have promised to make it a memorable evening for all and we are extremely thankful for their efforts. If you missed out on last year’s fun event, then make sure to get your tickets as soon as possible from any committee member and attend! Tickets only cost R150 per person (heavily subsidised by our Club funds!) and includes a scrumptious meal with a dinner/dance in a fabulous venue, with music, wine, entertainment and spot prizes. What an evening!! Hint….it may be to your advantage to brush up on your knowledge of 007!

The committee has negotiated with Glenwood school for club members to park OLD CARS only (i.e. cars up to 1975) close to the clubhouse during club events. We kindly request that people do not drive over the sports fields. Please drive around the outer edge of the sports fields. During wet conditions we may also not drive to the clubhouse due to the damage it causes to the grassed areas. We appeal to all to please adhere to this request. Important Clubhouse Notice

Please note that the conditions of the liquor licence for the bar at the clubhouse prohibits anyone to bring any alcohol onto the premises. The bar is open during all events and the prices are very reasonable. Please support the bar as these funds go straight back into the club. We kindly request that all please comply with this request, as non-compliance may put the liquor licence in jeopardy.

Wel en Weë / Tears and Joy

We are pleased to hear that our club Patron, Jack Boshoff’s health is improving. Please keep him in your prayers. We wish Jack a full recovery. Pierre Conradie is recovering following a back operation. We trust that Pierre will soon be up and about.

Op n reënerige Sondagoggend ry ek en Karin deur George se stil strate na Peter Boshoff in Moodie straat. Hy het ons genooi om saam met hom in sy Mercedes Benz 220S Fintail na die snoekbraai te ry. Van Peter af ry ons na Carlu motors in Blanco waar ons op die res van die mense wag wat saam gaan ry na Riverside by Klein

Brakrivier. Na ‘n padverlegging met “swak” padaanwysings is ons na n paar meter se verkeerd-ry weer op die regte pad en daag by Riverside op. Ons besluit om buite te sit inder die bome maar moet toe maar later na die eetsaal skuif toe n reënbui uitsak. Dit is die eerste keer dat ons die snoekbraai bywoon en ek was verras om te sien dat daar ander klubs ook is wat uitstappies reël van uitsonderlike gehalte. Ons is hartlik verwelkom deur Johan Sloet, voorsitter van die Suid Kaap Streek. Kobus Harris is voorwaar ‘n meester snoekbraaier en saam met sy span en voorslag tegnieke het ons gou gou aangesit en aan heerlike snoek en patats gesmul. Nagereg het gevolg en daar was regtig niks om oor een verkeerde word te sê nie. Ek het baie nuwe mense ontmoet en selfs raad gekry met my Fintail wat ek besig is om te restoureer. Hierdie is n uitstappie wat tradisioneel by die Bakke gehou word en na Riverside geskuif is as gevolg van die weer voorspelling vir daardie naweek. Ek moet regtig die MBCSA bedank vir ‘n goed georganiseerde uitstappie en ook dat hulle die SKOMK elke jaar na die snoekbraai uitnooi. Ek en Karin sal dit nie maklik weer mis nie.

What a privilege we, as members of the Southern Cape Old Car Club have, to attend such well organised and interesting outings arranged on a regular basis for the exclusive benefit of the members of the Club. The most recent one started, as a matter of fact, at the gathering point at Roelf Jack’s Garage in Madela Blv. from where the convoy departed for the venue of the evening. It is at this gathering point prior to the meeting where discussions of all topics, mostly motor related take place, before departure. Aan Philip Kuschke wat die byeenkoms gereël het, en Rosita, sy beste helfte, vir haar hulp en bystand met die spyseniering en

vir Otto Botha en Dirk Postma wat vir die braaiwerk verantwoordelik was asook Phillip Rosser vir die voorsiening en beskikbaarstelling van die vloeibare toebroodjies, ‘n groot dank aan elkeen van hulle.

En dan, aan Kobus Mostert vir die geleentheid om sy versameling motors van naderby te besigtig en ‘n bietjie te hoor van die agtergrond van hoe alles ontstaan het en die voortbou daarvan. ‘n Mens kan nie anders as om in verwondering te staan en luister as hy praat oor die fynste besonderhede van elke voertuig in sy versameling nie.

Om maar ‘n paar te noem, die pragtige 1970 2-deur Cadillac wat vroeërjare aan sy pa behoort het en hoe hy moeite gedoen het om dit na jare weer terug te koop. Om die detail te hoor van hoeveel daar in daardie jaar vervaardig is, van die kleur opsies wat beskikbaar was by die fabriek asook die kleur opsies vir bekleedsels. Dan die drie mooi spogmotors wat op die vloer gestaan het en afkomstig is uit oorlede Jurie Botha van Kroonstad se boedel naamlik die Lincoln Continental, Pontiac Bonnievale en Buick Riviera wat elkeen slegs sowat 2 000 myl op die klok het. Nog ‘n voorbeeld was die Messerschmitt wat ook op die vloer gestaan het en in die fynste besonderhede beskryf was. Op ‘n vorige geleentheid op 24 Junie 2018 tydens die Bonnets up by die Klubhuis, het hy vir ons sy pragtige Packard gewys en het ons die voorreg gehad om haar weer te bewonder.

Dankie ook aan Kerneels, wat altyd byderhand is om iets of anders van die voertuie uit te lig of duidelik te maak. Ons dank en waardering aan hulle.

Erfenistoer 21 – 25 September 2018

Deur Lettie Breytenbach

“Dit is weer lente, winter is verby, Kyk hoe staan die blomme in die vlei”, so besing die digter die natuur in September. Vir my (en ek glo ander toerders ook) was hierdie werklik ‘n Erfenistoer met baie nostalgiese oomblikke. Die ongelooflike meganika van die voertuie ná 100 jaar-plus, bly steeds fassinerend. Vir my en Gawie was daar die heimweë na kindwees toe ons deur ons heimatland gery het. Vleie in die Breederivier het wel plek gemaak vir wingerde van Chenin Blanc en Sauvignon, maar die varkblomme langs die pad en vleierige gedeeltes bekoor nog steeds. Met die besemwa kon ons werklik die natuur indrink en ons verlustig hoé dankbaar die natuur is vir reën na die versengende droogte. Die eikebome op Lelievlei wat ek en my sibbe elke Saterdag met emmers water uit die fontein moes natdra, staan hoog en lowergroen en die hartbeeshuis nog stewig - onveranderd en nuut afgewit. Ceres, waar ons as tieners altyd Saterdagaande in die bioscope voor die brug gaan fliek het, het weliswaar in ‘n “spaza shop” verander maar, die Erfenistoergangers sukkel nie met sulke giere nie. Ons maak sommer ons eie fliek – daar by Ceres se ingang, waar die rotsleeu met die jare se verweer van sy voortande verloor het. (Seker van op-die-tande-kners vir die skerp draai vorentoe.) Party oumotors se remme was/is mos maar … wel julle weet self … “brieklos”! Anders slaan dit vas. Brieklos of –vas, tange, boute, draad en wat nog nodig is, behalwe water, olie en o ja, brandstof, sit ons weer vrolik hop-hop op pad deur Onder-Swaarmoed tot op Bo-Swaarmoed na Erfdeel, deel van Matroosberg Natuurreservaat. Waar kan ‘n mens nou beter oornag gedurende ‘n erfenistoer as op Erfdeel , waar soveel hulde aan die huidige boere se voorouers betoon word. Die saal is ter ere van ‘n Pa en Ma met liefde opgerig. Die hele plaaswerf getuig van liefde vir familie, natuur en kosbare genade – water! Dit plant, spuit en

bewerk soveel so dat ons ampers nie ontbyt gekry het nie. Maar ‘n boer maak ‘n plan, grootmense kry (genoeg) kos en hondjies kry Montego.

Na ‘n nag van regtig “koud is die windjie en skraal” ry ons verder deur die Swartland waar wuiwende graanlande, so hoog soos die lyndrade, ‘n mens verder onder die besef van Groot genade bring. Na nege jaar van byna geen oeste is daar belofte van rekord-oeste. Op Darling is daar ‘n verrassing: “Oh my darling” soene op die 1948 Hudson Pacemaker … dit was my Pa se motor! Kan jy nou glo dat ‘n verpligte stop so ‘n ontmoeting kon inhou! Ongelukkig het teëspoed met hul motor veroorsaak dat Walter en Lily Fivaz moes onttrek. Brieklos! Op dieselfde trajek het ‘n Morris 1000 in die sand op Elandsbaai vasgesit. Jan Wright is darem sonder die besemwa uit sy dilemma verlos. Toe verby Leipoldtville na Lambertsbaai, en kan julle glo – nog toevallighede. Ons geniet aandete by Isabella’s … nee dis nie uit die Isabellas se kattebakke nie, dis die Spaans-Portugese restaurant (want Isabella is eintlik ‘n Spaanse naam) met ‘n ewe aantreklike en vriendelike Spaans-Portugese restaurateur. (Die visgrootte is 12/8 vir julle wat sulke groot stokvis wil bestel.)

Met “commutators”, filters, remme, olie, water, coils en wát nog meer wat verkeerd kon gaan uitgestryk, word die arendsnes oftewel Eagle’s Nest verlaat via Clanwilliam met ‘n VOL dam (die sluise is oopgemaak die volgende dag nadat die dam feitlik droog was)! Die roete was deur Piekenierskloof berg-af verby Porterville deur die Nuwekloofpas.

Nog ‘n verrassing het op ons gewag … die Rovostrein en die vier oudstes reis saam-saam deur die kloof. Hiervandaan is ons terug na Ceres oor Swaarmoed en Klondyke, die beroemde kersieplaas en oorprong van die soet waatlemoene, tot weer by Erfdeel vir die gala-aand. Na ‘n aand van dans met blommekinders, paddikas, twist en bop, groet almal swaarmoedig na ‘n heerlike en vir die meeste ‘n voorspoedige toer.

Dit was ‘n ware erfenistoer. Ek het weer eens onder die indruk gekom van hoe ‘n ryke erfenis ons in ons midde het – ‘n rykdom van

persoonlikhede (ou karre het mos ook elkeen ‘n eie persona), geaardhede, filosofieë en vernuf. Baie dankie aan medetoergangers en alle betrokkenes by die reëlingskomitee, vir jul bydrae tot die lente in ons lewe. Ons voeg die belewenis van hierdie toer by die erfenis van ons “memory box”. SELA

Graaff Reinet Car Show

The Graaff Reinet Vintage and Classic Car Show was organised by the Midlands Car Club and formed part of the KarooLus Festival. This was the second year that this club organised the show. Last year Chris van Staden, Pierre Olivier and myself drove from George to attend the show with our partners. This year there were about 140 cars on display and many more of our club members from all over attended. It was a well organised show with a good variety of cars on display. Even though the show was less than one week after the Heritage Tour it turned out to be a great weekend getaway for us.

Century Charity Run

The Garden Route Motor Club has organised this event with the assistance of the Triumph Sports Car Club to raise funds for charities in Sedgefield. The route took the cars on a leisurely drive

from the Engen garage in Sedgefield to Great Brak River where lunch was enjoyed at De Dekke. Certificates were awarded for the highest combined age of driver and car. There were many entrants from the SCOCC and may prizes were won. The Triumph Sports Car Club managed to raise R19000 which was distributed between two charities in Sedegfield.

This will be an annual event and we encourage our members to participate in this fun event.

70 Jaar van Porsche

Wat ‘n wonderlike Garage-aand by Jacques Wheeler se pragtige nuwe gebou. Met die instapslag besef jy - dit is ‘n vertoonlokaal en nie net ‘n stoor nie. Nagenoeg 110 gaste het opgedaag met ‘n groot opgewondenheid om meer kennis te verkry van die ou en nuwe Porsches. Dit was so interessant om te hoor hoe Porsche 70 jaar gelede begin het en hoe dit gevorder het tot waar ons nou is. Al die manne en vroue wat met hul Porsches kom spog het, het ‘n bietjie geskiedenis van hulle unieke motors gedeel. Hulle liefde en passie vir Porsche was aansteeklik. Bez Bezuidenhout het merkwaardige kennis van die geskiedenis van Porsche. Sy wit 1991 model, 364 911 Turbo is in so goeie toestand en ons kon sien dat Bez trots is en passie vir sy Porsches het. Hy skroom ook nie om met ‘n breë glimlag op sy gesig te vertel hoe hy “voet in die hoek” ry nie. Dit was so interessant dat selfs die vrouens aan die vrae deelgeneem het. Rohann Steenekamp het baie aandag en opgewondenheid veroorsaak, toe hy sy rooi, 1964 356 Porsche, aangeskakel en “gerev” het. Daar is gespot of hy seker is dat die ringe nog in plek is.

Mooi was nog nooit lelik nie, hoe lui die spreekwoord … hoe rooier, hoe mooier. Jacques Wheeler se LMP 3 renmotor was ook ‘n groot aantrekkingspleister en ons moes ore toedruk toe hy die 7 liter Porsche aangeskakel het en toe die toere opgejaag het. Dit was kliphard, maar die mooiste enjinklank wat ek nog gehoor het! Almal se wit emalje was sigbaar van die groot lekkerte. Daar was ‘n ongelooflike “Wow “atmosfeer en ons sal aanbeveel dat meer klublede se metgeselle saam met hul mans hierdie aande bywoon. Dit is voorwaar ‘n wen-resep. Baie dankie aan Philip Kuschke en ander klublede wat hierdie aande moontlik maak.

Hokaai Middagete

Die jaarlikse middagete by Hokaai net anderkant Mosselbaai bly maar ‘n wenner!. Om een of ander rede was daar hierdie jaar minder lede wat saamgery het, maar nietemin was die kos soos gewoonlik uit die boonste rakke.

Ongeveer agttien lede het heerlik saam gekuier. Volgende jaar maak ons weer so!

ons nie. Hoe beter ek en jy iemand leer ken, hoe beter sal ons die die persoon of saak leer ken en dus daarom beter begrip toon vir die persoon of saak.

Baie lede van oumotorklubs en selfs lede van die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub, wonder waarom dit enigsins nodig is om geaffilieer te wees by SAVVA. Met die skryf van hierdie artikel gaan ek poog om die werksaamhede van SAVVA beter aan u bekend te stel.

SAVVA is die afkorting vir Die Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging vir Veteraan en Noagmotors (South African Vintage and Veteran Assosiation). SAVVA is geaffilieer aan MSA ( Motorsport South Africa), die nasionale beheerliggaam wat alle motorsport in Suid-Afrika beheer. MSA is weer internasionaal geaffilieer aan “the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile” (FIA) Die FIA is dus die internasionale beheerliggaam van motorsport.

ALLE motorsport-byeenkomste wêreldwyd staan onder die jursdiksie van die “the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile” (FIA). Hierdie organisasie bepaal die oorkoepelende reëls vir motorsport. Die FIA bepaal dat alle deelnemers aan motorbyeenkomste, wêreldwyd, in besit van ‘n deelnemerslisensie moet wees (Competition license). Om ‘n deelnemerslisensie by MSA (Motorsport Suid-Afrika) uit te neem, het ‘n groot koste implikasie, maar sluit ook baie ander rompslomp in. Deelnemerslisensies is slegs vir een jaar geldig! Mediese ondersoeke moet jaarliks gedoen word en is BAIE duur. ‘n Rits aansoekvorms moet ook ingevul word. Indien SAVVA nie vir ons by MSA ingetree het nie, sou ons ook hierdie roete ELKE jaar moes gevolg het! Hoeveel van ons ouer lede sal nog hul mediese ondersoeke elke jaar met sukses slaag? Hoeveel van ons sou jaarliks bereid gewees het om hierdie langdradige en duur prosedure te deurloop net om aan klub-byeenkomste soos die Erfenistoer te kan deelneem?

SAVVA het met MSA onderhandel en vandaar die RCL (Restricted Competition License). Klublede se klubkaarjie is aan die agterkant ge-endosseer met die opskrif MSA RCL. Wat beteken dit vir ons as

lede van ‘n SAVVA-klub? Jy mag aan enige klub- of SAVVA – georganiseerde byeenkoms deelneem! Slegs deur jou jaarlikse klublidmaatskap-geld te betaal ( R200-00) is jy die wettige houer van ‘n geldige MSA RCL. Welgedaan SAVVA - ons waardeer hierdie voorreg!

Versekering op klassieke voertuie is vir die gewone versekeraar ietwat van ‘n truksvy. Baie van die versekeraars stel nie eens belang om sulke voertuie te verseker nie. Indien jy wel ‘n versekeraar kry wat bereid is om jou klassieke voertuig te verseker, is die versekeringspremies nie altyd so gunstig nie. SAVVA wat ongeveer 50 klubs in Suid-Afrika verteenwoordig en uit 7500 oumotor-klublede bestaan, het met FNB onderhandel om ons voertuie teen ‘n besonder bekostigbare premie te verseker. Hierdie versekeraar het al verskeie van ons klublede se eise sonder enige kibbel, spoedig uitbetaal. Chris van Staden, ons klub se tesourier, was Vrydag, 2 November 2018 met sy 1968 Porsche 912, net na afloop van die 2019 Media bekendstelling van die George Oumotorskou in ‘n ongeluk betrokke. Op Saterdag 3 November het Chris reeds die opdrag van die versekeraars ontvang om slegs een kwotasie vir die skade aan sy Porsche in te dien, waarna hul goedkeuring sal gee dat die motor herstel kan word. Fantasies!! Sonder enige onnodige kibbel en stry en allerhande voorskrifte deur die versekeraar.

Die beste van alles is, dat die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub ‘n jaarlikse gedeeltelike premie- terugbetaling van FNB kry van klublede wat deel het aan versekering by hierdie instelling.

Baie dankie SAVVA dat u waarlik omsien na die behoeftes van u lede.

SAVVA Technical Tip 132

Running in engines I’m sure many of us can recall the time when it was common

practise to place a notice in the rear window of a car saying “running

in please pass”. The engine had probably been rebuilt or at least

new rings fitted and for the next 1000 miles or so one had to drive

“Hamba Gahle”. One was also advised to run a new car at under 45

miles per hour for the first 500 miles and then change the oil at 1000

miles. I have an idea in those far off days the oil in new cars was in

fact a running in oil of some sort. Do I recall someone once saying

running in oil had Graphite in it?

We (or me) seem to have forgotten about this and we now use

modern oils in a rebuilt engine. We are told by the “experts” however

that modern oils are not suitable for running in rebuilt engines.

Perhaps we should take a step backwards and run rebuilt engines

for the first 1000 miles/kilos or so using proper running in oils.

Apparently they are available again.

It was interesting looking at one of those American TV programmes

Fast and Loud (or something like that) where they fitted a rebuilt

engine in a car and on running it, it sounded as if there were a few

loose nuts and bolts in the engine. The engine rebuilders were

called in and the result was that the engine had been damaged

because they hadn’t used proper running in oils.

I think the message is clear – don’t use fancy modern engine oils to

run in older engines. The modern oils are so good that the rings will

just go up and down in the bore without bedding in, never mind the

bearings and other twiddly things that go around and around and up

and down.

SAVVA Technical Tip 133

Brake lining material Over the years I have been very aware that the brakes on my older cars are marginal and modern cars continue to improve the gap between old and new - with ABS, XYZ, Stability control etc. Incidentally, I recall my Austin 7’s handbook referring to the use of the middle pedal to retard your speed! Nothing about stopping the car! I have owned an early Buick for about 20 years and every year I’m aware of two things. 1) Modern car brakes are getting better whilst the Buicks stay the same (or even worse). 2) I’m getting older. Here’s a story that may be of use to enthusiasts who have a similar problem: Over the years I’ve had the brake cylinders of the Buick re-sleeved and the linings replaced but with no noticeable improvement, in fact, they seem to have deteriorated. I believe, or in fact know, they should be much better as I recall my old Dad having early 1950’s Pontiacs with similar brakes and he pulled caravans all over the country without braking problems. Reading an early Buick workshop manual I noticed they referred to the necessity of using woven linings. I spoke to a few brake shops about woven linings but they weren’t very helpful. Most just said their linings were soft enough for the job. In desperation, I took a rear brake drum and its lining and went to one of the very old brake shops in Johannesburg called Wingate and placed them on the owner Issy’s desk and asked if he could see anything wrong with them. Incidentally, he’s been in the braking business for something like 60 years. Without hesitation he said – you cannot use those linings on that old car as all you are doing is “polishing” the linings. That was so true as they were very shiny.

On his advice I had the linings fitted with woven material. These new linings were noticeably woven and had what appeared to be flecks of brass in them. Bottom line – I now have brakes, or let’s say, much improved braking. Suggestion – when relining shoes find a shop in your area that can fit woven linings. Many won’t know what you’re talking about but believe me there are shops are out there who do. P.S. Wingate also suggested the fitting of a vacuum brake booster hidden away where it’s not visible. Being a stickler on originality I’m resisting this advice – however, I think they could be right.
