OCTOBER 2017 The Rest is History...or is it? BY DR. RANDY SHERRON, PASTOR Three years ago I received a letter that read in part: Dear Pastor Sherron, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing as a member of Midtown Community Church here in Raleigh. I am serving on a team at Midtown that is looking into facility options for our church moving forward….Our team would be interested in speaking with you and your staff about any possibilities of using/renting church space from Ridge Road Baptist… And as they say, the rest is history—only it’s not. History implies the past and our partnership with Midtown is still ahead of us. On Sunday, September 24 th we had an overwhelming vote to move ahead with our three-year agreement to lease Midtown space. To be completely honest, no one knows how this will turn out. Congregations sharing space isn’t new. Congregations sharing space so intimately—worshipping only minutes apart is different. Logistically we’ve done everything we can to make sure our respective schedules run smoothly. After the trial period I really don’t have any concern we’ll be tripping over each other on Sunday mornings. Instead of fears I have hopes. Hopes of what this can mean for two churches at different life stages. I wonder if we will be like tenants in an office park who know each other by sight and speak on the way in or out. Or will we be partners in ministry engaging in fellowship and ministry opportunities together? I think either example can be beneficial. Personally, I’d prefer the partnership model but that’s just me. It will take two pastors, two groups of leaders, and two communities to make this more than a lease agreement. When I received that first communication in 2014 I didn’t know what the end result would be. Most of the time inquiries like this don’t work out. By my count we’ve had three other organizations want to use our facilities in similar fashion over the last four years and they went nowhere and for whatever reason this one worked out. Why? Perhaps it was timing or the process was different or Midtown was more compatible. Or, and I prefer this logic, maybe God’s Spirit was moving us toward each other for His Kingdom’s greater glory. eBeacon Newsletter- OCTOBER 2017 1 Ridge Road Baptist Church www.rrbch.com

BY KERRY JOHNSON, MINISTER OF MUSIC

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good willtoward men.” Those are the opening words of our ChristmasCantata this year, and will also be the basis for our adventbooklet theme. We’re stretching ourselves this year as we aretaking on a classical work to be sung in Latin... “Gloria” byAntonio Vivaldi. I hesitated to take it on at first, but the choirconvinced me that they wanted to “go for it!” That kind ofattitude can overcome many obstacles. It kind of reminds meof Tommy Lasorda, manager of the Dodgers in the 80’s and hisgreat pitcher Orel Hershiser. Lasorda said, “When Bulldogwants the ball I give him the ball!” There are people in life you can just trust like that, to get the job donewhen needed, and after 4 years of working with the RRBC Chancel choir, I’d have to say they are like that. So, I’m giving the Chancel Choir the ball and off we go! It’s not going to be easy, but I think it will be fun andso worthwhile.

In addition, we are stretching ourselves with our advent booklet. We’re going to take the idea ofcongregational involvement in the booklet a little bit further. For starters, we will again have Marjo createthe artwork for our cover. We will also be reaching out to a handful of our congregation members for shortpieces of writing around our theme mentioned above. We will be celebrating our diversity as a church as wepresent a variety of different “takes” on the subject of peace on earth.

We have only just begun rehearsals for our Cantata. We would love to have you join us. Remember that ifyou would like to slip in, do the Cantata and slip out that’s perfectly OK. Don’t worry about jumping in a littlelate. We will be having some extra rehearsals down the road that should help bring everyone up to speed. Please don’t assume you are too young or too old. Just call me at 919-961-1442 if you’d like to get involved.

I look forward to the advent season this year! I hope you do too. It will still have plenty of tradition, along withnew variety, the spice of life! And I am convinced it will put a…

Song in your heart!

Gloria

A Wonderful Evening of Fellowship!

Last Sunday evening, October 1st, we joined together with Midtown Community Church and the RRBCWeekday Preschool for a wonderful evening of Bluegrass & BBQ. We had nearly 250 people in attendanceand it was quite a delight to see families of all ages coming together as brothers and sisters in Christ tofellowship together.

We extend a big thank you to the leaders from both churches who coordinated this event. Your teamworkand planning made for a grand evening.

Hopefully this is just the first of many events together!
