WEEKLONG Venturers from across the state attend 2017 Lones’

Murrum Weeklong camp, assisting William Josh,

Community Engagement Officer by checking the

water quality of Lake Canobolas near Orange,

including also planting native grasses along the

lake’s edge to diminish erosion and boost the

environment’s health. Another fun activity was the

commando course where Venturers put their skills

to the test and had an amazing time.

AT ROCHEDALE REVUE

On September 23rd we went up to see Rochedale Revue in Brisbane—a theatre experience

run completely by Scouts and Guides—with our three kids; Kalia (5), Isaac (2), & Ariana

(10wks).

Prior to arriving we had been in touch with the production team and when we arrived we were

met by the co-producer Ben who gave us a rundown of how their show runs, and introduced

us to the backstage manager. We took our seats and the lights went out in the Kingston

Butterbox Theatre. Each skit on the stage was very cleverly put together, very funny and full

of energy. It is clearly a very close knit show where everyone's like a big family. It has been

running since the 1980's and many of the original youth are now adult cast and supporters.

Also there are several families involved with multiple family members in the show.

At interval we had the opportunity to talk with some of actors and production team as VIP's.

The second act was as entertaining as the first and was largely themed around the history of

the building before it was the theatre. The building in its former life was the Kingston Butter

Factory well worth a look in itself which houses a small museum about the history of the

butter factory and surroundings.

A big thank you to Rochedale Scout Group and Rochedale Revue for welcoming us and for

the ongoing offer of support to bring some Creative Arts into our region.

Good Afternoon all,

And just like that we have reached the end of Term 3. How quickly is this year

going? I would like to thank all of the North West Adult Leaders,

Committeemen and Supporters that give their free time selflessly so that our

local Scout Groups can continue to provide Scouting in our local communities.

Well done to you all! It has been a busy year so far and I expect that the

remaining year will be almost intolerable with scouting things to do. Thank you

all for committing to the idea of “Doing Your Best”.

Over the last month I visited the Narrabri West Scout Troop where they

showed me how to make charcoal so that I can use a Flint and Stone to easily

start a fire – it was an absolute pleasure to see these young people at play.

I was very lucky to travel to Orange on the 22nd

of September to be at the

opening of the Murum week-long camps, which is an annual activity that is run

by the LONES Scout Group. Over a hundred members of Scouting from all

over the state (and outside…) are enjoying themselves, doing badge work and

enjoying the activities being that are being run. We have several youth members

from the NW enjoying themselves at that wonderful camp. If you get a chance

next year to participate you should leap onto that chance!

I also visited the Peel Valley Venturers and was kindly asked to adjudicate on

the Unit debate, where the Peel Valley Venturers had challenged the Rovers

from Flat Gorge in a discussion about whether or not direct action should be

taken against North Korea for their dangerous brinkmanship they have been

engaged in recent times. Peel Valley was arguing the case “for” whilst the Flat

Gorgers argued for peace. I am happy to say, that in my considered opinion,

the case for peace and restraint was successfully argued by the Flat Gorgers!

Bravo to all involved and thank you for an entertaining night. I would encourage

all Scout Troops to look at encouraging a debate night in the winter months – I

promise that it will be an eye opener…

I am very happy to say that on the last weekend on the school holidays the

North West Scout Rally will be run and we are expecting over 70 Youth

Members to be in attendance. I am looking forward to hearing how everyone

involved had a great time.

In the last couple of reports I asked for all of the Section Leaders of the Groups

to chart out the award progress of their Youth Members, Joeys, Cubs, Scouts

and Venturers. I don’t want any of them saying at the end of their time in their

section saying “I could have gotten my Grey Wolf or my Australian Scout

Medallion…” Encourage your Youth Members to do their Best at all times.

I will also ask again that all section Leaders build the New Law and Promise

into their programs and are striving to get their Youth Members understanding

and living by them.

I am very happy to announce that the State Commissioner of Adult Training and

Development, Mrs Tarranne Bryan, has resigned from that role! This makes me

smile because Tarranne has agreed to step into the NW Region Team as the NW

Youth Programs Coordinator. All Section Leaders should expect to have contact

with Tarranne sooner rather than later and if you could get ahead of her by having a

copy of your term 4 program ready. This will be an important hand for us to be able

to co-ordinate support for the Sections of the NW and work on improving

communications between the Groups.

I am also going to repeat a call for the Group Leaders to encourage all Leaders and

Committeemen to read and understand the Leader Support Guide 23 – Code of

Conduct. I would ask you all to be mindful that when you are in uniform you are an

ambassador in Scouting and your words and actions should always be in the best

interest of Scouting. It is hard enough recruiting Adults and Youth to our movement

without the additional woe of negative experiences…

I am not in a position to entertain any breaches of Scout Law or the Code of

Conduct.

I would like to note that Mrs Stephanie McColley has stepped down from the role

of NW Region Treasurer due to changes in her work place – I would like to thank

Stephanie for her efforts as Treasurer and am happy to mention that she will

continue to help out the Inverell Scout Group in her various ways.

I will be participating on the upcoming night canoe hike and helping out at both

Joey and Cub canoe days coming up during the fourth term.

I will be visiting the Groups of the Region during the 4th Term and hopefully get to

see our Youth Members at play.

Thank you all very much for your continued efforts for Scouting the in North West!

Regards,

Bear, NW

ROVERS REUNITE It was great to see the old Rover Den out at Lynchwood, some of us hadn't been to Lynchwood for

30 years. Lots of fond memories of Moots at Lynchwood and service to Lynchwood, Rovers did

catering out there and helping with building, cleaning up out there over the years. It was great to see

Bill Wordsworth as he was a valuable part of our group. The few of us that came looked at photos

and relived some of our fond memories. Tony and I met through Grant Lee and scouting and

married. As did Grant and Margaret Adams met through Rovers and married. Our families have had

long association with scouting, with great memories and friendships made!
