Karvy Investment Insight

Peace of mind and Wealth Creation ideas for long term

Karvy Insights brings to you investment wisdom to help our investors make sound investment decisions and reach their goals faster. These inputs may not help you become wealthy in a short span of time, but they would definitely give you peace of mind and a roadmap for your financial journey.

How much insurance do you need?

» Typically, insurance is purchased as a tax-saving instrument - is it enough to cover all our liabilities and provide for our families? What’s a good way of figuring out how much insurance you need? Insurance needs change as you move on in life. Amount of insurance needed for a single individual with no liabilities, or for a person with children or a home loan to repay, will not be the same.

» Simple back-of-the-envelope calculation should indicate that value of your insurance policy should be 15 to 20 times your current income. The lower figure (15 times) would mean more frugal living while the upper limit (20 times the current income) anticipates a more lavish lifestyle.

» In other words, priorities in life determine your insurance needs. Therefore, sum insured should be equal with your future needs.

» Another way understand the life insurance requires you to ask:: ‘how much money would your family need in an unfortunate circumstance of your untimely demise?’ Your family’s future needs can be determined by posing the following questions:

» How much money would be needed at death to meet immediate obligations?

» How much future income would be needed to sustain the household?

» How much would the family need in the more distant future - for children’s education, marriage, etc?

» The difference between your family’s current and future needs and the resources in place to meet those needs will determine the amount of life insurance you need.

Story of The Month

A carpenter went home after shutting down his workshop. While he was gone, a poisonous snake entered his workshop.

The snake was hungry and hoped to find its supper lurking somewhere within. It slithered from one end to another and accidentally bumped into a double-edged metal axe and got slightly injured.

In anger and seeking revenge, the snake bit the axe with full force. What could a bite do to a metallic axe? Instead the snake’s mouth started bleeding.

UNCONTROLLED REACTION

Sometimes when we get angry, we try to cause harm to others. But as time passes by, we realise that we have caused more harm to ourselves. It is not necessary that we react to everything. Step back and ask yourself if the matter is really worth responding or reacting to.

Out of fury and arrogance, the snake tried its best to strangle and kill the object that was causing it pain by wrapping itself very tightly around the blades.

The next day when the carpenter opened the workshop, he found a seriously cut, dead snake wrapped around the axe blades.

The snake died not because of someone else’s fault but faced these consequences merely because of its own anger and wrath.
