From Your Editor Greetings to all and I am the new editor Nicholas. I am excited to bring you the programme of events for the upcoming year. First lecture of the year is on ‘RAF Reaper Operations’ on the 14th of October at University of Manchester. May I also take this opportunity to thank the previous editor Elaina for her effort and contribution, and wish her every success in the future.

In addition, Andy will discuss the operations of 39 Squadron whilst outlining the

challengers faced by being on constant operations in Afghanistan with the

"cockpit” being located on the west coast of the USA. Andy will also discuss the

training and manning issues which posed the unique challenges during the

introduction of the RAF's first weaponised UAV capability. Throughout the

presentation, Andy will develop the theme of how educating all levels of RAF

Commanders was a key in changing historic approaches towards airpower…

Andy Jefferies joined the RAF in 1986 and following navigator training was posted to the Tornado GR1 on IX

Squadron at RAF Bruggen, in Germany in the strike/attack role. Following this, he was posted to the Hawk T

Mk1A as a Navigator Training Instructor on 234 and 74 Squadrons at RAF Brawdy and then RAF Valley. After

returning to the Tornado GR1A on II(AC) Squadron in the recce/attack role. On promotion to Squadron

Leader in 1998, Jeffrey completed staff tours in the Air Warfare Centre and then the ISTAR procurement area

of the MOD before returning to the GR4 force on II(AC) Squadron and was appointed the deputy squadron

commander.

Andy was appointed as the MOD’s UAV/UCAV expert in the Air Staff. He then went on to be the first OC of

the newly reformed 39 Squadron flying the MQ-9 Reaper Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) in Creech AFB,

NV and developed the aircraft’s multi-mission capabilities in the ISTAR and armed roles. For his efforts in

introducing this vanguard capability, Jeffrey was awarded the OBE in 2010 and then returned for a 3rd tour in

the MOD within the Joint Capability Area with specific responsibility for the development of CONOPs for

novel weapons.

In 2011 Andy left the RAF and joined Goodrich.

Oxford Road Station is only 400m from the George Begg Building, which is on Sackvillle Street, up the ramp to the right of the Weston Conference Building. Salford Crescent Station is within 200m of the Newton Building. Journey time is around 6 minutes and the return fare with a student railcard is £1.15 (£1.70 without a railcard). Departure times week day afternoon and evenings are: OXFORD ROAD TO SALFORD CRESCENT 15.26, 16.26, 17.26, 18.26, 19.24, 20.24, 21.24, and22.39. SALFORD CRESCENT TO OXFORD ROAD 15.25, 16.25, 17.25, 18.25, 19.25, 20.25, 21.25 AND 22.25.

The Teddy Fielding Mini Lecture Competition

The event, supported by the Association of Aerospace Universities, was held at the James Lighthill Building, the

University of Manchester during the evening of Wednesday 22nd April 2015.

Two entrants and their subjects were: Osadolor Folorunsho on Laminar Flow Control Bethany Fleetwood on Runway Performance of Aircraft

The Judges, John Pedley, Bill James and Ian Horsefield awarded the Trophy to Bethany Fleetwood for her

Lecture- Runway Performance of Aircraft. In addition to the trophy, she also received a certificate and a personal

cheque for £100.

PROGRAMME 2015-2016

The Royal Aeronautical Society and its’ Branches have more than 20 000 members

worldwide from Seattle to Australia. The Society supports the aerospace industry and

profession in manufacture, operation and research. It also encourages entry to, and those in,

aerospace education and also public interest in aviation.

As part of this support branches provide a programme of lectures and events. All

Manchester Branch Lectures are free of charge to all professionals, students and the public.

Addition this season we are working as part of RAeS Northern Branches Group (Manchester,

NORTH WEST AIR AMBULANCE OPERATIONS

Lecture by Vic Crawford at 1900 at Woodford Community Centre, Chester Road, Woodford,

Stockport SK 7 1PS.

The NWAA is one of 18 Air Ambulance Charities in the UK. We carry out over 2000

missions a year. In this talk I overview the development of Air Ambulance operations before

showing you round the EC135 helicopter and introducing you to the crew. I explain what

happens when you call “999” and how the helicopter is deployed. Finally I talk through a

range of lifesaving missions.

Vic Crawford describes himself as a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, I worked for over 30

years in manufacturing. On retirement I fulfilled a boyhood ambition and learnt to fly and was

lucky enough to become a tour guide showing visitors round Concorde and Nimrod at

Manchester Airport. I am a volunteer presenter for the North West Air Ambulance and

deliver talks on a range of aviation topics to raise money for this worthwhile charity.

EXO MARS ROVER- ENGINEERING FOR THE RED PLANET

Lecture by Abigail Hutty Spacecraft Structures Engineer , Astrium Space Engineering

University of Manchester.

The 2018 mission of the ExoMars programme will deliver a European rover and a Russian surface

platform to the surface of Mars. A Proton rocket will be used to launch the mission, which will arrive

to Mars after a nine-month journey. The ExoMars rover will travel across the Martian surface to

search for signs of life. It will collect samples with a drill and analyse them with next-generation

instruments. ExoMars will be the first mission to combine the capability to move across the surface

and to study Mars at depth.

AIRLINE FLYING IN THIRD WORLD & TROUBLED AREAS

AFTER 7pm to avoid the usual parking charge.) Our annual joint meeting with The Aviation Society.

‘Flying for Life “ Progressing from 1950 when flying operations began in Sudan, with former Service

Pilots using a de Havilland Dragon Rapide, MAF now operates around 135 aircraft, typically

turboprop including Quest Kodiaks (a new type developed especially for this kind of work) with

unorthodox procedures and devices like the circling bucket drop and the rake brake.

MAF operates in around 25 countries, supporting about 1,500 medical, relief and development and

refugee agencies; national churches and missions; and governments and NGOs.

Peter de Bourcier trained in the aircraft industry at Vickers-Armstrong’s, Weybridge, and

Southampton University, and then joined the Royal Air Force. He became a training captain,

formation leader and pathfinder on medium-range transport, and then a training captain and examiner

on long-range transport.

He later joined MAF as the training captain and examiner for a new operation with a 15-passenger

twin-turboprop Beech 99 based in Nairobi.

Paul Hodgeson was Chief Designer at BAe (AVRO) Woodford and describes himself as the last of the

line which began with Chadwick. He will talk to us on Regulation and Controls to be managed in

getting Historic Aircraft back into the air and their operation.

The Annual Mini Lecture Competition follows the AGM at approximately 19.00.

If you feel like you have something interesting to talk about and the ability to tackle the testing

audience, then why not enter for competition.

You will be required to talk about an aerospace related topic for 20 minutes and receive a further 10

minutes of discussion and questions from the audience. If you are an individual under 27 years of age,

or a team from the Air Training Corps, you stand to receive £100 or a free flying lesson in addition to

a year’s possession of the trophy. Exceptional talks stand to be submitted for main society prizes,

which include the prestigious N.E. Rowe prize.

MANCHESTER AIRSHOW

RAeS Northern Branches Group (Manchester, Chester, Preston and Brough) to take a major part in the

2016 Manchester Airshow as part of our programme to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Royal

Aeronautical Society.

Plans to include 5 aircraft cockpits (including a Lightning)open to visitors, Glider Flight Simulator,

Radio Control Model Flight Simulator, RC Model exhibits, Airfix Spitfire building competition,

Aerospace Art and Photo competition together with exhibits by local aerospace companies and

Universities which offer Aero Engineering courses. These will all be provided free of charge to all

and, we believe, a major attraction to show visitors.
