Alumni Prize Recipients Casey Berkowitz, Leonardo Gómez, and Zoe Verni

Casey entered Rye Country Day School in Kindergarten and graduated in June with an Alumni Prize, the School’s highest honor. She excelled across the board academically, including an enviable score of 2360 out of a possible 2400 in the SATs, while serving as a student leader from the seventh grade through her senior year. She has gone on to Brown University, where she no doubt will continue her good works and out-standing academic performance. While she has not chosen a major field of study at Brown, Casey thinks it may be in pre-med and/or psychology to fulfill her long-term objective of “working with kids in some form of healthcare. The brain interests me the most,” she says, noting that biology and psychology were high on her list of favorite subjects at RCDS. Then again, it’s hard to find any subject not on her list of favorites. Casey’s Upper School transcript boasts 7 AP courses and 8 honors classes. In addition to the Alumni Prize, she also has won The University of Pennsylvania Book Award, the RCDS Spanish Award and several high awards in the National Spanish Exam competition. Student government occupied a large portion of her time. She was president of the Junior Class and president of the Student Body in her senior year. She’ll long be remembered for her administrative abilities and the special events and projects that were aimed at helping fellow students and further unifying the

various groups on campus: A Brother and Sister semi-nar was held to develop a stronger connection between incoming freshmen and those in the Upper School; Morning Meetings took place once every study cycle to enhance bonding through fun projects; and a bake-a-thon competition was held with prizes for those who baked and contributed their goods to a sale benefitting Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Casey loves to sing and hopes to continue at Brown. She was a member of the Upper School Choir for three years, plus a member of the Madrigals choir in the ninth grade and a member of the Bel Canto girls’ choir in the tenth grade. She also played three years as a center mid-fielder on the RCDS varsity soccer team, was active in girls mentoring, was a peer tutor of other students, was a campus tour guide, assisted at a science mini-camp for Lower School students, and twice represented RCDS at a service leadership conference at Adelphi University. Casey served as a student teacher in the Saturday Enrichment Tutorial (SET) program and also in the Student Centered Outreach Partnership and Enrichment program (SCOPE), both of which provide homework assistance and enrichment studies for Port Chester grade-school students. In the summer following her freshman year, Casey traveled to England to take courses in medical science and literature at Oxford University. The follow-ing summer she interned with a surgeon, “shadowing him” through surgeries and patient consults at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. “It rein-forced my interest in medicine,” she says. She also was a member of J-Teen, a student service group in the Westchester Jewish community that helped clean up and repair damage from Hurricane Sandy in Brooklyn, and later helped clean up tornado damage in Oklahoma City. During the school year and in the summers, Casey visited Blythedale Children’s Hospital on a regular basis, assisting the doctors and nurses in caring for patients. For her Senior Term proj-ect of community service, Casey chaired a group from RCDS that assisted at Blythedale.

In presenting the Alumni Award, Michael Lazar ’87, president of the RCDS Alumni Executive Board, praised Leo as “a standout leader of his class his entire four years in high school. His positive approach, his ener-getic participation, and his willingness to help others succeed show all of us how he leads by example and by the power of a positive personality.” Leo is now at Yale University, undeclared for a major, but “excited to explore a number of possibili-ties.” As usual, he’s carefully planning his approach —this time as a member of Inroads, a national organi-zation that prepares and places talented young people in corporate positions. Academically, Leo, who joined RCDS in the sixth grade, was strong across the board, with a heavy emphasis on math. He scored high on the SATs, completed eight AP courses, was named a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar and was presented with four other major awards during his four years in the Upper School: He won the Class of 2008 Award as a freshman, the Christine Nelson Award as a sopho-more, the Dartmouth College Book Award as a junior, and the Mathematics Prize as a senior. His strong interest in music led to perfor-mances in two spring musicals and membership in the choir, the Madrigals honors choir, and WildScats, an a cappella group. A tenor, Leo also sang in the annual Festival Chorus, with a solo in his senior year when he

also was co-president of the choir. “I love all types of music,” he says, but listens to electronic music, rap and hip hop in his “spare” time. Sports also are high on Leo’s list of favorites. He played left wingback on the soccer team for four years and was a member of the team that won the Fairchester AA championship in his junior year. He’s also a rabid fan of F.C Barcelona, a leading team in the Spanish League. He ran three years on the track team in the spring, first as a sprinter, and later as a middle-dis-tance runner, both individually and as a member of relay teams. “I was solid, but un-spectacular as a run-ner,” he says. Leo has been recognized for his involvement with a number of community service projects stemming from Midnight Runs with his parents and three younger brothers, which started when he entered elementary school in New Rochelle. The family has continued this twice a year, collecting and distributing food and cloth-ing on “runs” to the needy and homeless in New York City. Leo was a peer leader; a campus tour guide; co-president of Students of Color, a mentoring program pairing Upper School and Middle School students; and co-president of the Student Centered Outreach Partnership and Enrichment program (SCOPE), which provides reading comprehension and writing assis-tance to Port Chester grade-school students. This past summer, Leo worked five days a week in the ACTION program at RCDS, teaching a vari-ety of courses to academically driven students from the Westchester area. Off campus, he continues to contrib-ute time to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mamaroneck, where he teaches in the Sunday school. For his senior term community project, Leo was on the RCDS team that helped build homes in Nicaragua. His fluency in Spanish and interest in work-ing with youngsters led to the local kids following him around the site, calling him “Papa Leo.” He grew up with the language since his father, Nelson, is a native of Colombia, a country often visited by his family.

“ESPN is my favorite TV channel,” says Zoe, a sports maven and student athlete who received the coveted Alumni Award. It’s the highest honor bestowed by RCDS and a tribute to Zoe’s amazing success. Sports have been a key part of her life as long as she can remember, but she also posted a great aca-demic record before moving on to Brown University, where she will play Division I lacrosse. Zoe was honored as a first-team High School All-American in lacrosse for the past two years, and also was named to the 2015 All-American Academic Squad. Zoe won 12 varsity letters as a result of play-ing three sports - lacrosse, field hockey and basket-ball - over the four years she attended Rye Country Day School. She played on ten championship teams; received six Fairchester Athletic Association all-league commendations and numerous school coaches’ awards; was named a Con Edison Athlete of the Week; and at Prize Day was honored with the Mary Borton Trophy as “the senior girl who has contributed most to the School’s athletic program.” Academically, Zoe completed eight AP cours-es, received the Humanities Award, three silver med-als in the National Spanish Awards competition, and

the Art Department’s 2-D Studio Art Award. For the last three years, she has been a member of the Art Club and has taken ceramics and sculpture classes. Her work has been displayed in school, and some pieces have been purchased by admirers. She plans to pursue ceramics and sculpture at Brown. Off the playing field, Zoe also found time to participate in peer leadership; Backyard Sports, a Westchester organization that counsels underprivi-leged and special needs children; the annual Breast Cancer Walk; and Team Up, a campus group she co-founded to encourage and organize athletes in per-forming community service. In summers and during breaks in her RCDS schedule, Zoe, a midfielder, was a member of the Revolution, a girls’ lacrosse club that engages in devel-opment tournaments in the area. She also has been a member of a field hockey development program in Brewster, NY. “To utilize my Spanish, I went on trips to Costa Rica in my freshman and sophomore years where we surfed, hiked and went white-water rafting while also performing community service,” she says. The past two summers, she also worked as a counselor at a beach camp in her hometown of Mamaroneck. Zoe notes that her family, including brother Nick, a sophomore at RCDS, is rather active, par-ticularly in water sports and hiking and in following professional basketball, with a focus on the New York Knicks. “My first lacrosse coach was my mother, Kate Verni, who was captain of the women’s lacrosse team as an undergraduate at Georgetown University,” she says. Zoe has not decided on a field of study at Brown, but long-term wants to stay involved with ath-letics, perhaps even as a coach. “I like being busy,” she says.

Headmaster’s Prize Recipients Emily Duarte, Jourdan Layne, and Matthew Webster

The Headmaster’s Prize is presented at Prize Day to “that student who models leadership, courage, or academic excellence.”

Emily, a National Merit Scholarship finalist and two-sport star athlete, capped her career at RCDS by win-ning the Headmaster’s Prize. She is now a freshman at Harvard University, one of the many top-ranked schools that recruited her to play field hockey.

Emily is the third member of her family to graduate from RCDS. Her twin brother, Eric, winner of the Auxiliary Prize and also a member of the Class of 2015, is studying engineering at Notre Dame, and her brother, Matthew, Class of 2007, graduated from Amherst College.

Emily entered RCDS in the sixth grade and maintained a high grade-point average throughout her career. She completed nine AP courses, five of them in her senior year. As a senior, she was recognized with a scholar-athlete award by the Fairchester Athletic Association. She also was honored with the School’s Christine Nelson Award in her sophomore year, the Harvard Book Award in her junior year, and silver med-als in the National Spanish Awards competition in her sophomore and junior years.

Emily was a member of several clubs, news editor of Crop, the school newspaper; a campus tour guide, an activity she headed in her senior year; a member of girls’ peer mentoring; and, an oral pro-ficiency intern (OPI). As an OPI she helped teach Spanish to sixth graders as a junior and to tenth grad-ers as a senior.

Emily Duarte Field hockey attracted Emily in the sixth grade, and she went on to play four years on the varsity team as both a forward and midfielder. “Wherever I was needed,” she says. She was co-captain and also win-ner of the Wildcat Award as the most valuable player in both her junior and senior years. She was named “Athlete of the Week” and a scholarship winner in the Con Edison awards program during the past season. The RCDS team won the New York State Independent School Athletic Association (NYSISAA) championship all four years of Emily’s career. She also was named by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association to its all-region team this past season, and has been a member of USA Field Hockey’s futures elite program, which has involved her in national and Junior Olympics competition. Her other sport, lacrosse, has been part of her life since the eighth grade. Emily was a forward on the varsity team for five years, was a three-time honoree of all-league recognition by the Fairchester Athletic Association, and starred on the RCDS team that went undefeated in 2015 and won back-to-back NYSISAA championships in 2014 and 2015. Emily and her family “love basketball,” and she also enjoys travel, tennis, and reading, particularly historical fiction.

Jourdan LayneJourdan was a “lifer” at Rye Country Day School, start-ing in Pre-Kindergarten and continuing through the Upper School, where she was awarded a Headmaster’s Prize this past spring. She now is a freshman at Muhlenberg College, where she aims to become certi-fied in education while majoring in psychology.

Jourdan’s goal is to become a teacher, “per-haps at RCDS,” she says, noting that she has strong ties to the School. In her senior year, she served as an ex officio member of the Alumni Board, and prior to graduation was elected as a Class Agent. She also worked as a receptionist in the main building dur-ing the summer of 2014, and was a counselor in the School’s 2015 summer ACTION program, where she helped teach students from Westchester public high schools.

Jourdan lives in the Bronx with her mother and sister, Brittani Nivens, a member of the RCDS Class of 2004, who is studying for a doctorate in English Literature at the University of Capetown, South Africa. Brittani graduated from Trinity College and then received a masters in English Lit at Capetown.

Muhlenberg attracted Jourdan because of its “amazing” education and dance programs. She had strong academics at RCDS, with a concentration on the arts, particularly ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance. She was selected as a member of the School’s Cedar Street Dance Company, a performance troupe, and also taught dance at the Carver Center as part of her com-munity service activities.

Jourdan played Rusty, a lead role, in Footloose, the 2015 spring musical, and previously had been a featured dancer in Guys and Dolls. She sang as an alto in the Upper School Choir, which performed in Italy and Croatia in 2013.

She also participated on the track and field team — as a sprinter in her freshman year, and as man-ager of the team in her senior year.

Jourdan was a co-executive member of Peer Leadership, which provided services for the needy; a member of the middle school Diversity Club; and a member of the Students of Color Mentoring Program. For her senior term project, she joined the RCDS group that helped build two houses in Nicaragua, “an amaz-ing trip,” she says.

Off campus, Jourdan’s major interest remains dance. She dances with a group at her church, the New Testament Temple Church of God, where she also leads the children’s dance team. Her performances include those at the church on Sundays and also in competi-tions at home and away as part of Teen Talent. In May, she placed second in individual contemporary dance in the New York State championships and qualified for the national championships in Cleveland, Tenn., in August.

Otherwise, Jourdan enjoys traveling, reading fiction, trying different restaurants with her family, and pro basketball.

Matthew WebsterMatt had a short, but productive career at RCDS, high-lighted by winning the Headmaster’s Prize and lead-ing the School’s baseball team to the championship of the New York State Independent School Athletic Association (NYSISAA). Matt joined RCDS in the ninth grade, posted an impressive four-year academic record, made strong contributions to community service projects, and starred in baseball. He’s now a freshman at Tufts University, which recruited him for baseball. His inter-ests are economics and international relations — and in playing baseball, of course. He particularly enjoyed math, science and history at RCDS, taking several honors courses in his first two years and seven AP courses in his junior and senior years. As a junior, Matt won the Yale University Book Award. His interest in international relations was stirred by his four-year participation on the Model United Nations Team, which convened with students from a number of other countries in an annual Ivy League Model U.N. Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. Matt was co-head of finances for Peer Leadership, working on providing food, clothing and other basics for the homeless and needy, as well as helping teach a freshman lifestyles class. He also was a campus tour guide and a speaker at Open House, an event for prospective students and their families. Matt’s senior term project as a member of Bridges to Community was a highlight of his career. He was one of 14 students who worked with local citi-zens to build houses and help renovate a school in Nicaragua. Off campus, he volunteered to mentor young-sters with special needs at Pleasantville Cottages. Through it all, baseball has remained Matt’s special love. He played varsity baseball all four years: second base as a freshman and shortstop for the last three. As a sophomore, he hit an eye-opening .511 and received the Coaches Award. And the Fairchester Athletic Association honored him with two all-league awards and one honorable mention. He was co-captain of the team this past season when it finished with an overall 16-5 record and was undefeated in its seven-game climb to the state championship. Matt batted .397 for the season and had three hits in the cham-pionship game, an extra-inning 3-2 win over Hackley School. During the summer, Matt plays club baseball. For the past two years, he has played the infield for the New York Grays, a travel team based in New York City. He has hit well over .300 in games in the New York area and from Maryland to Indiana and Ohio. It’s no surprise that Matt is “a die-hard Yankees fan,” something he’ll have to deal with at Tufts, which is located in the heart of Red Sox country.

Several Rye Country Day School students par-ticipated in the Area-All State ensembles this year. Each student prepared an advanced solo to perform for a judge. They scored among the very top students in Westchester County, earning spots in the selective ensem-bles. After intensive rehearsals, they performed at SUNY Purchase under the direction of nationally recognized conductors.

The WildScats brought home top honors through-out the spring. Horace Mann’s Acapellooza brings together independent schools primarily from Manhattan. The WildScats won Best Group for the second year in a row. The Acappella Extravaganza sponsored by Gilda’s Club Westchester brings together both public and independent schools from across Westchester County. In this competi-tion, the WildScats took first place. Right after graduation, the WildScats were also invited to share the stage with the Brearley B Naturals at their 25th annual Acappella Jamboree.

New York Math League ContestFrom the American Math League Contest website: Over one million students from the United States and Canada partici-pate in Math League Contests each year. Every contest has questions from different areas of mathematics. The goal is to encourage student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving worthwhile problems. Athletic Achievement

Con Ed Award winner, 1000 points – 1000 rebounds - Tara Berger ’15Tara, a 5-year starter for the girls’ varsity basketball team, earned All-FAA, and All-WNESPSA recognition. During the season, she received the prestigious Con Ed Westchester Athlete of the Week Award. With over 1000 career points and rebounds, Tara led the basketball team to two FAA titles and two NYSAIS championships during her tremendous career at RCDS, which included recognition as the 2015 Wildcat Award winner, the team’s most valuable player. Tara is continuing her academic and basketball careers at Wesleyan University.

FAA Scholar-Athlete, New England Champion - Caroline Kimmel ’15The Fairchester Athletic Association named Caroline Kimmel as one of just twelve senior Scholar-Athletes, who have reached the highest academic standards while playing two or more varsity sports and earning Fairchester Athletic Association All-League honors. Caroline took the most challenging of courses exceling in nine honors and ten AP courses. She captained the girls’ varsity squash team and ran outdoor track, contributing to a New England Championship Division II in the 4 X 400 meter relay. Caroline now attends Stanford University.

Field Hockey National Academic Squad, US Lacrosse All-Academic Team, FAA and ConEd Scholar-Athlete - Emily Duarte ’15Emily was a four-year starter, most valuable player, and record-holder for the most career goals in field hockey, while leading the field hockey team to four consecutive NYSAIS Championships. Following her outstanding senior season and after completing eight AP and eight honors courses, she was named to the 2014 Harrow Sports/National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s High School New York State All-Region Field Hockey Team, as well as the National Academic Squad.

Emily was also a major contributor to the girls’ lacrosse team’s back-to-back NYSAIS Championships and 2015 undefeated season. Her strong performances on the field and in the classroom while taking seven honors and nine AP courses earned her a place on the US Lacrosse All-Academic Team, as well as recognition as a Fairchester Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete.

This fall, Emily is continuing her academic and field hockey careers at Harvard University.

Field Hockey National Academic Squad, US Lacrosse All-Academic Team - Mariana Lee ’15Mariana was a three-sport varsity athlete playing field hock-ey, squash, and lacrosse. Earning awards in all three, Mariana excelled on the field hockey field, where she helped lead the team to four consecutive NYSAIS Championships. She also was a major contributor to the varsity lacrosse team’s two consecutive NYSAIS championships and 2015 undefeated season. Mariana’s outstanding performances in the classroom with seven honors and eight AP courses and her championship play on the field resulted in her being named to the National Field Hockey Coach-es Association’s High School National Academic Squad and the US Lacrosse High School All Academic Team. Mariana will attend Harvard University in the fall.

US Lacrosse All-American & All-Academic Team - Julia Massaro ’15After starting on the girls’ varsity lacrosse team for five years, senior Julia Massaro is continuing her academic and lacrosse careers at Stanford University. As a major contributor to the success of the girls’ lacrosse program, she established a new record for most career goals (260) while leading the team to two consecutive NYSAIS state championships, as well as an undefeated season and first FAA and WNEPSA championships in 2015. Julia was voted most valuable lacrosse player in 2015, and thanks to her strong performance in the classroom completing five AP’s and 6 honors courses, Julia was se-lected by US Lacrosse to both the 2015 High School All-American and All-Academic teams.

As a four-year starter on the girls’ varsity soccer team, Julia was the defensive force behind the Wildcats’ first NYSAIS Girls’ Soccer Championship in 2014.

US Lacrosse All-American - Taylor Regan ’17Three seasons, three sports, three NYSAIS state championships! Sophomore Taylor Regan started on the girls’ varsity soccer, basketball, and lacrosse teams and contributed significantly to each team’s championship season during 2014-15. She scored the winning goal in double overtime in the 2014 NYSAIS Girls’ Lacrosse Championship game and came back in 2015 to lead a repeat win over Hackley. Taylor was a major factor in the lacrosse team’s 2015 undefeated season and first FAA championship. US Lacrosse recognized Taylor’s stellar sophomore season by naming her to the 2015 High School All-American Team.

US Lacrosse All-Academic Team - Riley van den Broek ’15Riley’s leadership and offensive talent contributed to the boys’ varsity lacrosse team’s 2015 FAA, WNESSLA, and NYSAIS championships. Riley is continuing his academic and lacrosse careers at Williams College.

US Lacrosse All-American & All-Academic Team, FAA Scholar-Athlete - Zoe Verni ’15A recipient of an amazing twelve varsity letters during her Upper School career, Zoe was a major contributor to eight NYSAIS championships - four consecutive in field hockey, two in basket-ball, and two consecutive in lacrosse. US Lacrosse recognized her as an All-American after her junior and senior seasons, and this spring she also was named to the All Academic team. An outstanding student with eight AP and four honors courses, Zoe was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s High School National Academic Squad in the fall. This spring, Zoe received county-wide recognition as a Con Ed Westchester Athlete of the Week, and she was named a Fairchester Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete. At Upper School Prize Day, Zoe received the Mary Borton Award for contributing the most to female athletics during her Upper School career. This fall she is continuing her lacrosse career at Brown University.

Golden Dozen Scholar-Athlete Recognition - Derick Wallace ’15 and Eli Rattner ’15.The Golden Dozen Award is presented by the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame and honors the top football scholar-athletes in Westchester and Putnam County. Derick Wallace was selected as a 2014 Golden Dozen scholar- athlete, while Eli Rattner received Honorable Mention recognition.

Field Hockey Scholar - Athletes Honored - Zoe Verni ‘15, Michelle Haut ‘15, Emily Duarte ‘15, Sophie Beshar ‘15, Mariana Lee ‘15, Haley Nicholson ‘15, and Nathalie Chan ‘15

These seven senior field hockey players were named to the 2014 Keith Waldman - Optimal Performance Associates/NFHCA High School National Academic Squad. In addition, Sophie Beshar, Nathalie Chan and Emily Duarte were recognized as Scholars of Distinction.

Athletic Achievement

The girls’ 800-medley relay team: Sabrina Kwenda ’18, Jinjer Pearce ’16, Charlotte Boehning ’16, and Catherine Walker ’16. The team traveled to North Carolina for the 2015 High School National Track Meet and qualified as All-Americans with a time of 1:48.06.

New England Champions Division II in the 4 X 400 meter relay - Jinjer Pearce ’16, Caroline Kimmel ’15, Charlotte Boehning ’16, and, Catherine Walker ’16.

2015 NYSAISAA Champion in the discus throw with a toss of 113’ 7” - Jack McPhail ’15

Division II (small school) New York State Champion in the 400-meter dash in Albany, NY - Jinjer Pearce ’16

Salim Green ’15 scored his 1000th point in the 2015 varsity basketball game against King School and finished with a career total of 1,511 points. Salim will continue his academic and basketball careers at Wesleyan University.

Enzo Stefanoni ’17, a starter on the Baseball team since eighth grade, finished his sophomore season in 2015 with 24 career wins, breaking the previous record of 20.
