Cameron Smith Nuffield Research Placement 2015

Congratulations to Cameron on the successful completion of his Nuffield

Foundation research placement. A celebration event for this prestigious programme was held on 4th September at the Royal College of

Physicians in Edinburgh.

Cameron was subsequently presented with his certificate by

Dr Thomson at the S6 assembly.

This is a wonderful learning opportunity from which several of our pupils have benefitted in recent years. We would encourage more to apply.

An investigation of composition and cell structure of mammalian tissue using histology and

immunohistochemistry

Identification of tissue composition and cell structure is important to further our understandings of important physiological function in terms of development in response to the external and internal envi-

ronment as well as genetic changes in the individual. This project was to analyse mammal tissue using

histological methods and microscopic analysis. The student performed qualitative and quantitative mammal tissue analysis. Investigations included measurement of cellular components of the tissue and

analysis of tissue microstructure. Modern histological techniques were used to prepare the tissue samples and create slides. Several histological staining protocols were used to determine cellular types

and organelle distribution. Expression of individual protein components can be identified using

immunohistochemistry. The project involved scrutiny of the current scientific literature to form the ba-sis of the details of the project.

Physical Education Update We were all sorry to lose our Rugby Development Officer, Robbie Stewart, to a career in industry after the very positive impact he made on Jordanhill rugby last year, but we are delighted that Euan Clark has now joined us as his replacement. Euan comes to us with a wealth of coaching experience having been head coach at a school in Sydney for the last five years, so we have even more exciting times ahead. Against all odds, Euan already has a large group of players participating in extra fitness training before school! Hockey, football and rugby squads are now well underway for the 2015-16 season with encouraging results in opening matches, so, with a full team of experienced coaches in place, we are hopeful that we can build even stronger teams and replicate or exceed last year’s successes. It is always encouraging for our players to have supporters pitch-side on Saturdays, though they are usually outnumbered by parents of visiting teams! So why not bring the whole family along to cheer our teams on? There are excellent hot snacks available in the refectory to tempt you out of bed. As usual, a large number of sporting events and clubs will be organised by PE staff over the course of the year, providing opportunities for pupils to compete formally and informally in a range of sports. For details of formal annual events, see the ‘Sports Events for Your Diary’ section on the sports blog. All events and informal clubs will be publicised in detail on the portal, noticeboards and sports blog nearer the time. The last two years saw the introduction of Young Ambassadors in PE for pupils in S6 and we are pleased to be able to extend this in 2015-16 to pupils in S3, S4 and S5. These role models have a very important role in helping to promote participation in sport and physical activity amongst their peers. It is also a great opportunity for them to develop their own confidence and leadership skills through the training and experience that the programme provides. Saturday Morning Training Sessions

A few pictures from the first Saturday morning of the year when all the squads were out training getting ready for the new season.

Peru 2016 Plans are now well underway for the expedition and pupils’ fund-raising plans are starting to reap the rewards of their hard work. The team of 29 pupils, now in S6, ran various stalls at sports day last June resulting in an early boost to their funds. We get together for infor-mal meetings every 4-6 weeks, then will have three formal meetings in 2016 to complete our preparations in the run up to departure in June. The 24-day itinerary includes Amazon jungle, high mountain trekking, an orphanage project and a visit to the iconic Inca stronghold of Machu Picchu. Though the fund-raising may be a challenge, the prospect of this amazing expedition to

Peru surely makes it all worthwhile!

Young Ambassadors A day of meeting fellow young ambassadors, building on and learning new skills and qualities essential for young ambassadors and ultimately engaging in inspirational speeches from commonwealth champions awaited us at Hampden Park on Wednesday 16th September. Jordanhill School has 7 young ambassadors and two of us had the opportunity to attend the launch for the 2015-2016 school year. This introduced us to the roles and responsibilities we will fulfil when encouraging and motivating younger kids to participate in and enjoy sports. We had the privilege to listen and chat to several Commonwealth and world champions to find out why sport became so important in their lives. We heard about their dedication, hard work, rewards and the battles along the way throughout their journey to success. We lis-tened to talks from Lesley Macdonald – former captain of the Scotland netball team and Colin Gregor- former Glasgow Warriors rugby player and Scotland 7s team captain. The atmosphere and buzz around Hamden increased our eagerness and enthusiasm to get extra-curricular clubs up and running for younger year groups! After a fun filled day of learning and developing our ideas, it was time to go back to school and put all our new skills and experiences into play!! Jenny and Ross

On Friday the 28th of August 2015 the young sport ambassador team visited Glasgow city chambers for the young sport ambassador conference. There we met with other schools and spent the day working through challenges and workshops as well as in-teracting with organisers and pupils from other schools to discuss ideas on how to run the programme and how we would promote and expand sport and sporting rela-tions in schools around Glasgow. The conference was thoroughly enjoyable and I feel all the youth ambassadors enjoyed and learned a lot from the experience and that it will benefit us in our jobs this year.

Glasgow Netball Successes On Friday 2nd October a 4th year and a 2nd year girls’ netball team went to the Emirates arena to compete in a Glasgow Schools competition. Both teams performed very well. The 2nd year team were runners up in their event, narrow-ly losing to Holyrood 4-3 in the final. The 4th year team won their event, coming 1st out of 15 teams. They fought hard to get into the play-off stages, having to re-play Holyrood 1’s after drawing their group stage match with them. (They were both equal on points and goal difference at the end of the group stage). The 4th year’s rose to the occasion and beat Holyrood 1’s at their 2nd attempt. They then went on to comfortably win against All Saints and Holyrood 2’s in their play-off matches, winning the tournament overall. Congratulations to both teams!
