I believe what bothered me was the use of the word “little.” “My little wine” and “my little cracker” feel like a condescending way to refer to the real body, the real blood, and the real presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. I don’t like to be a shrew, but I expect more from a grown man who claims to “love the church” and “love God,” notwithstanding that there is no need felt by this man, by his own admission, to confess his sins and ask God for forgiveness. It’s one thing to disagree on what actually happens during Holy Communion much less who can and cannot receive it. As you all know by now, I believe in an open table to anyone who seeks to feel whole in the communion of his or her brothers and sisters and, most importantly, to be in communion with Christ. Regardless of our lot in life, all of God’s children need forgiveness which is received by recognition and confession of our sin. And anyone who seeks to deduce the power and presence of Christ in Holy Communion, I would remind him how we came to find ourselves at the table in the first place: by way of the cross. Peace+

2015

This past week I was listening to various

political candidates make their case for why

they should be President of the United States.

Most of the time it all sounds like white noise,

that is, until one candidate, who shall remain

unnamed, began talking about his faith. My

ears perked up immediately as he begin to

describe how much he loved church and he

went every chance he got. That was all fine

but it was when he started talking about Holy

Communion that things got interesting. The

candidate said, “When I drink my little

wine....and have my little cracker I guess that

is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do

that as often as possible because I feel

cleansed...”

Now I am very open to the various ways

we can experience God and God’s forgiveness

so if the candidate has a simplistic view of

Holy Communion, who am I to judge. I believe

what bothered me was the use of the word

“little.” “My little wine” and “my little

cracker” feel like a condescending way to refer

to the real body, the real blood, and the real

presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. I don’t like

to be a shrew, but I expect more from a grown

man who claims to “love the church” and “love

God,” notwithstanding that there is no need felt

by this man, by his own admission, to confess

his sins and ask God for forgiveness. It’s one

thing to disagree on what actually happens

during Holy Communion much less who can

and cannot receive it.

As you all know by now, I believe in an

open table to anyone who seeks to feel whole

in the communion of his or her brothers and

sisters and, most importantly, to be in

communion with Christ. Regardless of our lot

in life, all of God’s children need forgiveness

which is received by recognition and

confession of our sin. And anyone who seeks

to deduce the power and presence of Christ in

Holy Communion, I would remind him how

we came to find ourselves at the table in the

first place: by way of the cross.

Minutes of August 13, 2015

Members Present: Pastor Angie, Buford

Blankenship, Wade Brown, Rhonda

Gallimore, Gary Fletcher, Micky Beck,

Jackie Helton, Jack Klass, Brenda Hedrick

Absent: Donna Myers

Guest: Rob Crawford

Call to Order: President Buford

Blankenship

Devotions: Brenda Hedrick.

Approval of Minutes: A motion to

approve the minutes from the July 9, 2015

meeting was made by Micky Beck,

seconded by Wade Brown. The minutes

were approved.

PETITIONS FROM CONGREGA-

TIONAL MEMBERS None were made.

REPORTS: Finance: July’s offerings were just a bit

short of financial needs. August offerings

are off to a good start.

Stewardship Team: No report.

Property Team –

Buford received the master plan for

the scatter garden. Roscoe Walker

will be consulted and a committee

formed to execute the plan. The cost

for the scatter garden will be drawn

from the cemetery fund.

Playground equipment has arrived

and has been installed. A Playground

line item will be maintained on the

financial statement in the event that

the church decides to purchase addi-

tional pieces and for the maintenance.

Refitting of the storage room remains

in progress.

Service and Fellowship Team: No

report.

Worship Team: Homecoming 2015 will

be September 6, 2015. The Rev. David K.

Huddle has been asked to preach.

Youth and Family: With the advent of

the school year, monthly activities are

being planned for the youth.

Education Board: No report.

Membership & Outreach Team: In

regard to the provision of meals to the

homeless shelter, no changes have been

made. Micky Beck should be informed of

any necessary changes. Lisa Jones has

offered to deliver and serve the meals for

any group.

Pastor’s Report: report attached.

Council President Reports:

A decision about compensating Rob

Crawford for leading worship in the

absence of Pastor Jackson remains on

the table. If the church were paying

half of his tuition to Seminary, then

we would not need to compensate him

for supply preaching. A discussion

ensued about Rob’s presence among

us and the benefit of having him

available as a supply. While there

isn’t a line item in the budget for a

supply pastor, we have several lines

which could supply the funds. Rob

Crawford has not received payment in

the past. A motion was made by Bren-

da Hedrick to pay Rob $125.00 from

the unassigned funds, when he sup-

plies for Pastor Angie, seconded by

Jack Klass. The motion carried.

Chris Gallimore was approved for

membership in the church and he

would like his children, Nathan and

Natalie, to be baptized. Pastor Angie

will approve the baptisms. Arch

McMullan was approved for member-

ship.

A motion was made by Gary Fletcher

and seconded by Jack Klass to

convene into closed session. A

motion was made by Rhonda

Gallimore and seconded by Buford

Blankenship to reconvene in open

session.

Regular Business:

The Congregation Council decided to

pay for the pizzas for VBS. Buford

asked Kelly Newsome to pay for the

pizzas by check. The council raised,

by donation, $118.00 which was

given to Kelly Newsome in the

church office as reimbursement to the

church account. Rhonda Gallimore

provided drinks for the meal at her

own expense.

The hearing devices for the sanctuary

work well but do not function proper-

ly in the Fellowship Hall. Events in

the Fellowship Hall are not heard by

our hearing impaired attendees. To

Jackson will investigate a solution

following his recovery from surgery.

The wireless microphones seem to be

using an unusually large amount of

batteries. This, too, will be investigat-

ed.

A work day is needed to prepare the

building and grounds for Homecom-

ing. Pine needles will be spread.

Rhonda Gallimore has indicated that

the youth can assist with the project

on Saturday, August 29, 2015. She

will contact the members of the youth

via text to confirm the work day.

Pastor Angie has been accepted into

the Doctoral program at Hood Semi-

nary. She will attend classes the

second Sunday of each month

followed by two intense weeks of

study in January and July. Hood un-

derstands that these students are min-

isters and must be available in an

emergency. Pastor Jackson will be

paying for this study and will work on

a project of Pastoral care and will

present a paper.

Donna Myers is resigning as the head

of the Education Team for Ministry.

A replacement is needed. It is under-

stood that this position is one of great

responsibility. A co-chair system may

be an option of filling this position.

Buford Blankenship will review the

job description to begin the process.

A motion was made by Brenda Hedrick

and seconded by Buford Blankenship to

adjourn. The motion carried.

Respectfully submitted,

Donna Myers, Secretary

Will Jones, Dixon Klass and Penn Klass are shown at left with a huge

catfish that was caught by “noodling” — the kind of fishing where catfish

are caught with bare hands.

In Davidson County and throughout the Yadkin River basin, it’s the

flathead catfish, often ranging from 20-60 pounds, that are prevalent in the

warmer months, while the smaller blue catfish and channel cats are caught

during the cooler weather.

On any given summer afternoon, one can find Will at the lake with his

friends, Dixon and Penn, whom Will calls his “spotters”. Diving to depths

of up to 20 feet, spotters are really important for help in the event of an

emergency and for moral support. Additionally, when a fish is caught,

Dixon and Penn can make sure that the exits are blocked when it tries to

escape. Catfish are known to spin in an effort to get away from their

captors. Sometimes they will torpedo directly into a person’s chest.

The young men typically release their catches and enjoy this activity merely

for the sport of it; however, if you get a hankerin’ for some catfish, these

are your guys!
