Fall Family Dinner Wednesday October 8
Many of us have enjoyed our wintertime Firelands
Family Dinners—now we have an opportunity to gather
in Autumn. This time it’ll be mid-week, on Wednesday,
Oct. 8, at 6:00 at the Harbor View Grill at Erie Islands
Resort (off Dar Hopfinger Rd.) Sign up on the
opportunity table, and contact Kay McIntosh if you have
questions.
Men’s Forum October 11 The Men's Forum would like to invite all Congregational
members and friends to attend the showing of “The
Maiden Voyage of “Onward.””
This documentary was written by Bob Reynolds and Mike
Muhn. It is about the historic trip in 1905 of S. J. Matthews
and family taking a 9000 mile, almost one-year trip aboard
the 70 ft. yacht “Onward”. This happened prior to re-
locating the Matthews Co. from Bascom Ohio, to Port
Clinton in 1906. The showing will be on Saturday, October
11 at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall..
Pastor Jeanne’s Last Sunday October 26
There will be a special celebration following the worship
service. Come and wish Jeanne well in her new call.

One More Month to Get Those Walleye Out and About.
This summer and fall our wild and wonderful walleye
have been quietly raising money for the American
Cancer Society. The amount raised so far is $1025.00
This campaign will finish at the end of this month. Don’t
wait to participate. Think of a friend you want to
surprise with our colorful yard art. We hope to match
last year’s total of $2000. Fill out a pink sheet on our
opportunity table or call the church office.
The donation to send the walleye is $20.00. Once the
fish are planted in someone’s yard or garden, they may
pay a donation of $15.00 to remove them or a donation
of $25.00 to send them on to another family.
Thank Yous Second Presbyterian Youth wrote: Thank you for
allowing us to stay in your church over the weekend.
The cookies were great!.
Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, 50 “Gift of
the Heart” School Kits were assembled and mailed to
Church World Service in September. Our efforts are part
of the Presbyterian Church Mission. Children we never
meet will receive these gifts and know that someone
cares about them.
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its
various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
Welcome To Our New Members! What a pleasure it is to welcome Karen Shifflet, Dr.
Marta Velhaber and Ed Bettendorf as new members of
Firelands Presbyterian Church! We are truly blessed to
have them join us as fellow worshipers.
Karen, a long time resident of Port Clinton, was an
elementary school teacher in the local school district.
She and husband, Nick, are parents of two sons. Karen
is already involved here by working with the Food
Pantry.
Marta and Ed, who are married, have a daughter, and
work in East Cleveland. Marta is a physician who was a
pediatrician and now specializes as an allergist. Ed is a
corporate attorney who has served many terms as an
Elder and Clerk in their home church in Mayfield
Heights. They have a cottage in Lakeside that they use
mostly on weekends, especially in the winter when they
can enjoy the peace and quiet of that beautiful place.
They have already joined our “Sporadic Singers.”
Our new members remind us about how God uses us to
add to our membership. Karen found us on the Internet,
talked to her neighbor, Anne O’Malley, and came with
Anne to a Sunday service. Ed and Marta checked us out
on the recommendation of our former Interim, Rev.
Dean Myers! Just think of others who might come here if
they heard about us from a friend. Just think.
Welcome to this family of God, Karen, Marta and Ed.
The Mission Committee
Special Sunday November 2 The Elders of Jazz are coming to town. They will be
playing for our Sunday Worship. On that Sunday we will
also have a potluck after the service. Jim and Betty
Layton will be serving up perch and walleye. We will
sign up to bring the side dishes and desserts. This will
mark the end or our walleye fundraising season for the
American Cancer Society. We will also be auctioning off
some of our favorite fish on that day! This would be a
fine occasion to invite your friends to Firelands.

PASTOR’S PAGE
What’s Happening?
By now most if not all of you have heard the news that I
have accepted a new “call” and will be starting as
Interim Pastor at Havenwood Presbyterian Church in
Lutherville, MD (a suburb of Baltimore) in November. My
last day at Firelands will be Sunday, October 26.
I thought I would take this opportunity to respond to
some of the questions I’ve heard about this change.
What did we do that is driving you away?
Nothing. I won’t say that I’ve always been 100%
enthused with the actions and words of every person at
Firelands, but my leaving has far more to do with God’s
calling me to a new place than my wanting to leave
here. Actually, I love Firelands Church much more than I
do Port Clinton—one thing I’ve learned over the past
five years is that I really am not a Small Town Girl. I’ll
be glad to be in a city again (despite the traffic). And
being closer to my grandchildren will be no small thing.
Isn’t five years an awfully short time for a pastor
to stay in a church?
No, it’s about average, or maybe a little longer. I find
some studies saying that the average stay is four years,
some five years. Over seven years is now considered a
long-term pastorate.
Why such short notice?
When Bob Butcher left Firelands, he was retiring, and so
he could let the church know about his leaving months
ahead of time. This is not true for someone moving to a
different call. I was told that four weeks would be
appropriate; for a number of reasons, I chose five
weeks.
What will happen next?
Session met last night (Sept. 30) with Susan Meier, who
is the Presbyter for Common Life of Maumee Valley
Presbytery. Here’s some of what came out of that
meeting:
- Kay McIntosh, who is chair of the Worship & Music
committee, is looking for supply preachers to come
in for the weeks immediately after I leave.
- A small committee, headed by Alison Falls, is
creating a Ministry Information Form (MIF) to look
for a temporary pastor. Susan said she thought
Firelands would receive somewhere between two
and 40 responses to that form (which will be placed
online). It’s possible that a temporary pastor could
be in place here by the beginning of Advent.
Can you come back and do my funeral, marry my
child, baptize my grandbaby?
In a word, no. When I leave here, I will be leaving my
pastoral relationship with this congregation behind,
making way for a new pastor to come into relationship
with you.
I will still love you, and if you want to add me to your
Christmas card list, that would be fine. But I will no
longer be your pastor and, as the presbytery’s Covenant
of Sacred Trust says, I “may not offer professional
services to former parishioners, offer insights concerning
congregational life, or perform any pastoral function
related to the congregation.”
Will we be okay, here at Firelands?
Yes. More than okay, even. I truly believe—I know—
that God loves Firelands Presbyterian Church, that God’s
Spirit is alive and well here. And while my being called
elsewhere has been surprising news to many of you, it’s
been part of God’s plan all along. Which means that God
has also been planning for the next pastor to come and
love you.
Firelands is a healthy, vital, and blessed congregation. I
don’t know exactly what the future will look like for this
church, but I do know that it is a future full of life, and
love, and joy.
How can we support you in these last weeks?
Invite me to lunch or dinner, or even breakfast … give
me a hug … Or find a Session member and ask how you
can help the church in this transition. The biggest gift
you can give me is active support of this wonderful
church.
What kind of celebration will there be to say good-
bye to you on October 26?
I don’t know! (They kicked me out for that part of the
discussion at the Session meeting.) What I do know is
that I hope you’ll all come, so we can say good-bye to
each other in person.
Blessings,
Jeanne

via transfer of membership from the Church of the
Western Reserve.
Treasurer’s Report: Bill Umlauf, Treasurer – Mary
Caracci reported that the General Fund (GF) Income
year to date (YTD) minus the GF YTD Expense results in
a current GF YTD loss of (-$8,714.26). This reduces the
surplus at the beginning of 2014 from $26,500 to
$18,190.93.
Personnel: Alison Falls, Chair-The proposed Pastoral
Terms of Call for 2015 were presented and were
unanimously passed.

failed thermostat in the sanctuary has been replaced. In
the women’s restroom, an additional light has been
installed, and new paint and toilets are planned for
2015. The noise of the sanctuary overhead fans will be
checked to see how it can be lessened with the least
expense. Further investigation is required on the sound
system outage during a recent Sunday sermon. An
outdoor faucet near the Preschool, whose access is very
difficult, needs to be repaired before winter.
Preschool: Marsha Bordner– Congregation members
are encouraged to join Pastor Jeanne, Kay McIntosh,
Joyce DellaSantina and Karen Coffin in sharing their
special talents with the children. Once-a-month readers
are also encouraged to see Marsha or Miss Rachel to

worship service sometime this fall.
Twenty-seven children were enrolled for the summer
with 18 enrolled to date for fall. Changes to the manual
will be made regarding the limit on uncollected fees and
any new payroll expenses which will be passed on to the

$83,000.00

Report of the Pastor: Jeanne Gay-A youth fellowship
group from Newark, OH will be visiting Cedar Point and
staying over night at our church on September 14. A
request from Linda Green to teach a Yoga class at our
church Thursday evenings beginning in October was
approved. Ms. Green will make a donation as she sees
fit. New Beginnings Update: Small groups have finished
meeting. Leaders will meet on September 15 and 26.
New Business: Session approved John Vardyan’s
request that he take over the mowing of the church
property next year free of charge. Jeanne asked current
Elders to make a list of 4 to 7 things they do as head of
their committee. These ideas will be used as a training
tool for the new class of Elders.
Prayer concerns were shared and Pastor Jeanne closed
the meeting with prayer.
Next Session meeting is Tuesday, October 14th.

Preschool News September was a very busy and fun month in preschool. We learned about our
friends and their families. Each child brought in four special items to teach us about
themselves. We learned about each others favorite colors and toys, their families,
and some of their favorite hobbies. We also spent a week learning and singing
nursery rhymes. The kids had a great time reading different renditions of classic
nursery rhymes. Each rhyme was also accompanied by a learning activity and craft.
We spend a whole week reading books about colors. We identified and sorted
colors. We even did science experiment to find out what happens when we mix, red
and yellow, yellow and blue, and blue and red. The kids we excited to see the
results! We spent the last two weeks learning about apples and fall time. We made
apple sauce, sorted and counted apples, and learned how apples grow. We also
talked about the many fun things there are to do in the fall time. We learned why
leaves change color and what animals are busy doing
during the fall. We ended the week with a fall time
scavenger hunt around the play yard.
The kids, as always, enjoyed their visits from Mrs. D, Ms.
Kay, Coach, and Mrs. Winkie (the librarian). We have been
working hard practicing the songs Mrs. D and Ms. Kay
taught us. We hope to put on a wonderful "concert" for the
church member on October 12.
