October 2014

Happy Fall to everyone at Knoles! Can you believe we will soon be zipping up our coats, tying up our boots and turning on the heat! We hope you are ready for all the fun that Fall brings us.

We wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to all of our sellers during our discount card sales fundraiser. You all raised just under $19,000 for YOUR SCHOOL! We have some exciting things planned to spend that money on in the classrooms and around school. Stay tuned as we up-date you to our upgrades and add much needed items to your class-rooms. Cards are still available in the office at anytime. We still have about 400 cards left, so grab some more today and flood the town. We have heard from many of the vendors on the cards, that this is the best marketing they do as they see so many cards being used! Yea Knights!

Mark your calendars for our annual Fall Carnival Friday, October 24th at 5:30. Wear your costumes, play some games, win some prizes, eat some yummy food and have fun with all your friends. Tickets will be sold at the door. PTO will accept credit cards with a $20 minimum. If you are in-terested in helping with the Fall Carnival? We can use a few extra hands for our event. We will be placing orders for all the Knoles Knights apparel throughout the season. If you did not preorder yours, email us today and let us know what you need and we will make sure to get it to you soon. Hoodies are $25 each and are a great way to show your school spirit.

Principal’s Corner/October 2014

It is hard to believe that one quarter of the school year has already concluded! Teachers are busy implementing new lessons that coincide with the Common Core in the major academics areas of Language Arts and Math. Stu-dents are learning new ways to solve problems and think critically. And, teachers are continually collaborating to meet the expectations of the Common Core Standards and individual student needs.

As we look ahead to the month of October, there are many exciting activities happening at Knoles School.

Technology: As we begin our third year of integrating the IPads as a learning tool at Knoles, I am thrilled by the various ways in which students and teachers are using the devices. As I walk into classrooms I notice that stu-dents and teachers are regularly using these devices to enhance the learning of students.

We know that many students have cell phones here at Knoles. Please remind your child(ren) that all phones must be turned off and stay in backpacks while in school. Should their phone be taken out during the school day the phone will be sent to the office where it can be picked up at the end of the day.

If you wish to discuss a matter that directly affects your child in the classroom, please speak with your child’s teacher first. He/She is the person who interacts with your child on a daily basis and will be able to address your concerns. Your child’s teacher would be the best person to help you in the areas of: academic progress, any be-havioral concerns you may have, questions about classroom routines or procedures, classroom discipline mat-ters, and homework. In addition, the classroom teacher can share ideas to help you reinforce skills and concepts taught at school. If your concerns center on a school wide practice please direct your call to one of us. We will do our best to contact you as soon as we possibly can. I am always available at lhatch@fusd1.org to answer any questions or concerns.

Fun in Fourth Grade

Our 4th grade classes have been busy learning about water and conserva-tion. This unit has included a trip to

the city-wide Water Festival!

Now, our students are putting all their knowledge to work as they write opinion essays to debate

whether the ALS Ice Bucket Chal-lenge is an appropriate use of water.

Look for these essays in the 4th grade hall! So much learning is hap-

pening through this fun project!

Sensational Second Grade

The 2nd grade classes went on a hike to the Veit Springs/Lamar Haynes Trail out by Snow-bowl. We had a great time

looking at the fall colors and enjoying the wonderful cool weather.

We are getting ready to start our 1st and 2nd Grade AR Club with our first meeting on October 7th. We will be meet-

ing on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings at 8:00. See your child's teacher for more information and a permission slip.

2nd Grade now has really cool team t-shirts. We chose Knoles Knight colors so can wear them on Spirit Days to show

our 2nd Grade Pride!

Nurse’s Office News We are always in need of boys’ and girls’

size clothing and most of all JACKETS. Thanks for your used clothing donations!

Autumn has arrived! Dressing your chil-dren in layers will protect them from wind

and cold, and keep them comfortable when it warms up outdoors. Flu shots are available at the County Pub-lic Health Services (928-679-7222,) your Primary Care Provider, and various pharmacies. Adequate rest, ex-ercise, and nutrition will help keep your child’s im-mune system strong. Practice good hand washing, cover your coughs, and keep your children home for heavy congestion, fever of 100F or higher within 24 hrs (without medication,) as well as vomiting, and/or diar-rhea within the last 24 hrs to prevent the spread of illnesses. Students may bring cough drops from home to use while seated in class. Thank you!

THIRD GRADE LOVES SCIENCE Students are having a blast in 3rd

grade learning about Ecosys-tems! They are learning about the

relationships among organisms and their environment. Students are

learning about producers, consum-ers and decomposers. We are creat-ing food chains and food webs and studying their relationships. To fin-

ish the unit, students will be hosting an "Ecosystem Walk" where they

will be sharing their research on an

organism within their habitat!!!

Terrific Third Grade

The Knight Code of Conduct:

As a community of noble Knoles Knights, we have established a school-wide, Positive Behavior Support (PBS) pro-

gram called the Knight Code of Conduct. This school-wide program is designed to define, teach, and focus on pro-

social, positive behavior.

The Knight Code of Conduct is based on three general expectations that are easy for all students and staff to re-

member: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. These expectations are defined further by setting so that

students know exactly what actions are valued in the classroom, hallway, restroom, playground, and other areas.

Students are acknowledged for demonstration of targeted behavior with praise from staff and with Noble Knight

Tickets. Then, tickets from each class are drawn weekly for further opportunities for recognition, culminating with

the chance to have lunch at the Knights of the Round Table during the last week of each month.

The Knight Code of Conduct aims to establish a positive and safe learning environment that supports all children in

achieving their personal best. Positive Behavior Support programming provides students with the knowledge and

social skills to be successful at school, home, and community. It facilitates uniformity in expectations, reinforce-

ment, and support for students by all staff.

Please take this opportunity to talk to your child about the expectations at school and the importance of continu-

ing to demonstrate Noble Knight behaviors. With your continued support and involvement, Knoles Elementary

School will remain a positive learning environment where students excel academically and behaviorally.

Post Office Club

The Knoles Post Office is now up and running! Students, teachers

and parents can now send mail through the Knoles Post Office. All mail must be include a stamp and be addressed correctly with name

of the student and the classroom.

The big blue mailbox for outgoing mail is located inside the front entrance of school. Mail is deliv-ered on Thursdays by our Knoles Post Office Club

mail carriers!

Student Council will be up an run-ning in November. Currently, Mrs. Tapia is looking for parents inter-ested in helping with the school yearbook. This would include re-searching a program/company to compile pictures and organizing

the content of the yearbook. Stu-dent Council members will take

pictures to be included in the yearbook. Please contact her if
