MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Gerry Massey

This month I would like to ask each of you to do two things. First, think about your legacy. That’s right, think about your actions and

what you are leaving in your wake. When we leave this earth, many will not be missed and their memory will soon be forgotten. Don’t allow that to happen. As Noble Brothers (and Ladies), you are a part of something much bigger than yourself. It is incumbent upon each of us to leave this great fraternity in better shape than the way we found it. If we continue to do things “the way we have always done them”, we are guaranteeing a death sentence to our Hospitals and the fraternity. Our great fraternity has endured some demanding times over the years but nothing like what we are seeing these days. If we become complacent and never change to adapt to our surroundings, we will be obsolete before we know it. In the past 20 years alone, our membership has gone

from more than 6000 members to less than 1500 total. We are a quarter of the size we were just a short time ago. Why? I believe it is because we have failed to adapt to our new times and have not been able to include newer generations. If we care for our fraternity, we need to ensure it is still here for future generations to come. This leads me into our next item; I need your assistance for this one. Will you help me? I’d like to inspire you to take some time and look at those

around you… family, friends, co-workers, neighbors…. You too ladies, we need your help finding good men! After all, you did choose your Noble, so you must have good taste! We need to find good men in our fraternity that are interested in becoming even better men and helping Shriners Hospitals for Children! Our “Lyman Hatch Lake Havasu Ceremonial” is rapidly approaching and

we need to get many more candidates for the order. Please inspire them to join! Talk to your sons, grandsons, nephews and the like about joining so we can keep our fraternity strong for many years to come! Let’s inspire the next Shrine generation to care for our Shrine Kids!Yours in the Faith,Gerry

Arabian Tales Volume 32 – Issue #7 Clinics / Donations

We need your help. By this time of year, donations to the El Zaribah Hospital Patient Transportation Fund normally exceed $100,000. This year, we’ve only received

about $25,000. While we have a reserve in this fund, it is a concern that donations are lighter this year. We know that a major emphasis has been put on supporting the General Fund and this is indeed critical, but at the same time we can’t afford to totally ignore the Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. I know it seems like every time we turn around we’re asking for more money, but this fund helps our Shrine Patients. I’m requesting that all Nobles and Ladies consider making a personal donation to the Hospital Patient Transportation fund prior to the end of the year. Remember, that since this fund is part of the Shriners Hospitals for Children funds, your donation is tax deductible as a charitable donation

Thank you for your consideration.

Bar

b's Corner A note from the Editor...Barbara Hineman has agreed to provide us with stories each month about some of our Shrine Kids. Here is another in the series.

December 8, 2013Dear Shriners:

On behalf of our daughter Valeria, I wanted to thank you for all the great work and service you have performed for children with orthopedic disabilities.

Valeria was born with arthrogryposis in her lower extremities. The doctor who delivered Valeria strongly encouraged her mother to give her up since they lived in a very poor area in Russia and wouldn’t be able to take care of Valeria properly. Her mother signed her rights away before she left the hospital. Around the same time, we were moved to adopt a child who needed both help and a home and found our little Valeria by way of an agency that specialized in finding homes for disabled children from Eastern Europe. We thus adopted Valeria at 22 months of age in February 2005 from an orphanage for disabled children in Marks, Russia, where she had been her entire life.

When we brought Valeria (Lera) home to Minnesota, we were put in contact with Shriners in Minneapolis where Dr. Mielke performed heel cord release surgery on Lera. They also fitted Lera with her first set of braces. Since then, Lera has had more surgeries at other hospitals and we have moved to Phoenix but have found the Shriners here to be every bit as caring as those in Minneapolis.

We have now been to several of the Christmas parties at EI Zaribah including this weekend’s party. Lera gets so excited when we receive the invitation from you and counts down the days until the big event. This year, she wore a brand new dress she had saved for the party and proclaimed this year’s party was the “best ever!” Of course she says that every year when the party is over! When we got home from the party, Lera went straight to her room and put her gifts to good use (see enclosed picture).

I wanted you to know that you are truly making a difference and our family is extremely thankful for all you do. Thank you again,David and Fami

Adam Yenish and his wife, Danielle, carried a portfolio filled with ultrasound images of their unborn son’s motionless feet and wrists to over twenty hospitals, clinics and offices, desperate for an

answer. They were met with confusion. Then they met Dr. vanBosse.

Plan in motionDr. Harold vanBosse diagnosed their son, Anthony John, with

arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder causing joints to stiffen. When A.J. was born, his hands and feet were severely contracted, but they already had a plan in place, and A.J. began receiving treatment just twenty days after he was born.

Making the impossible possibleA.J.’s parents made the hour-and-a half

trip every week for six months, so doctors could slowly cast his feet and mold his hands into the correct positions, without extreme surgery. Through extraordinary family care and therapy, A.J. is able to walk, run and play with the aid of braces. He can even

move his hands fluidly.

“This is about recognizing a wonderful hospital and the doctors. It’s about recognizing greatness. This is truly one of those miracles.”

A Walking Miracleby, Adam Yenish

Every family wants the best for their children. Every family hopes their children and grandchildren - will always be healthy

and strong, free of any complications. But sometimes things happen, and our littlest

loved one need expert, specialized medical care. The best care for a child’s complex medical

issue may not always be available in your home town, or even in your home state. Because you want the best, you embark on The Journey of Hope.

Our 22 locations serve patients from around the country; more than 18 percent of Shriners Hospitals’ U.S. patients travel to their appointments by plane. Everyone wants the best care for their children - no matter the distance - and that is why First Lady Cheryl’s program, The Journey of Hope, will raise funds to augment the transportation assistance efforts for the patients, and families of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We invite you to support “A Journey of Hope” program. As First Lady Cheryl makes her visits throughout the year, she asks that donations be made to the fundraising efforts in lieu of personal gifts. Donations are also encouraged online.

With each donation of $30 or $40, contributors can choose a lady’s bracelet & bead or a sophisticated gentleman’s tie.

Support this program by mailing in a donationCompleted order forms can be sent with donations to Shriners

International Headquarters, First Lady’s Program, Donor Relations Department, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631.

You may email the Office of Development at Shriners International Headquarters at [email protected].

Out & About

This year, J C Reece and Randy Peters have been working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades.

We have made contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Because of attendance, many Units and Clubs have little cars that do not get driven. Members who could be marching or playing an instrument are instead driving a truck that pulls a trailer. In some instances, nobody has been there to handle the camels so they have had to stay home. These are a few examples of problems we have had.

We are now in contact with the parade groups to find out if they have cars that will not be driven, trucks that pull trailers that need a driver, help with camels, etc. Then, we contact the new Nobles.

We also ask all new Nobles to sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When they are available they need to contact the Oriental Guide or the High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club.

This has been working since the Tempe Veteran’s Day parade last November. We have had up to 6 empty parade positions in the past few months that we have filled with new Nobles.

It is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles meet and get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each group is about and help utilize our parade attractions.

If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Oriental Guide) 602-531-6545 or Randy Peters (High Priest & Prophet) 480-296-3957 .

Honoring Lyman Hatch

This year at the Lake Havasu Ceremonial will be having our Hospitality Room again on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Night. Saturday night will be a very special evening with games, Karaoke, and other types of entertainment. All three nights we will have a variety of food and drinks, and everyone is welcome. On Saturday, it is a Themed Evening with attendees having the opportunity to don their military or police attire to protect the Potentiate against the evil ZOMBIES. Yes, come in your best dress up as a zombie. Will El Zaribah survive to hold future events? Or will the undead take control?! Time will tell. We will have fun either way.If you would like to help, bring dishes to share for any night or if your enjoy, play bartender for a while and listen to your brothers and sisters with their Zombie troubles, just give me a call or drop me a line. We look forward to seeing many of our extended Shrine Family at Lake Havasu in October.Fraternally,Rick FasanoHospitality Chairman623-414-0990 | [email protected]’s Note: Rick sent this from his hospital bed after suffering a heart attack. Now, that’s dedication for you!

CulinaryWell the Culinary Unit survived

another summer without a single drop of gravy or beans being spilled on our aprons! Now I call that a

major success. Remember to keep your hands off the

plate until it is handed to YOU! That is for your safety, no one likes to be burned by HOT beans!Submitted in the faith,Ken Conner

Director’s StaffThe Director’s staff will be cooking

and serving dinner for the October 11th Mystery Dinner Theater. Please come out and support the Director’s Staff and El Zaribah.

The Lake Havasu Ceremonial is coming up and and we will need some help that Thursday or Friday Oct 23-24. We would also of course like some help unloading when we get back.A Red Coverall

Legion of HonorDuring the summer we participated

in the Payson Parade and Cornfest. The Legion of Honor Unit consists of

Nobles that have served Honorably or are currently members of the

armed forces of their country. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Unit. You served your country and now have the opportunity to serve the Shrine and have fun at the same time.

PatrolWe were busy parading

during the summer. We were in the Prescott Valley

and Payson Parades. We presented 1st Lady, Janet Massey,

a check for $200.00 for her auditorium project at the Shrine Stated Meeting with a challenge to all the other Units and Clubs to match our donation. That same evening two other matching donations were made.Capt. Ken

Computer ClubOur Club is open to all Shriners and

their Ladies. We spend little time with administrative action and most discussing Computer Problems or

working with computers. No problem is too simple for our gurus to work on and everyone benefits. We have several computers all set up for use by the members. If you have a computer problem that requires bringing in your computer do not hesitate to do that.

Drum and BugleThe Drum & Bugle Corps played at

the Cornfest and the Circus. We had a great time seeing the kids watch us play down on the track at the circus, maybe we’ve inspired some future

musicians!
