Fleischmanns First October 11th Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Reu-ter. Approximately 22 were in attendance.

The Fleischmanns First booth at the Cauliflower booth was well attended; eight new members and 15 member-ship renewals were completed as well as a brisk sale of FF t-shirts.

The Halloween parties are scheduled for October 25th; childrens party from 2 to 4pm, adults party 7pm and onward-see separate story.

Fleischmanns First is eager to see the municipal pool open next summer and a replacement pool for the fol-lowing year. The consensus of the meeting was to pur-sue plans for a new pool and the related funding.

If you have not already renewed for this year, please do so now. Send your minimum donation of $10 to Fleisch-manns First, PO Box 111, Fleischmanns, NY 12430. Well send you your FF signature bag upon receipt of your donation.

Rob Alverson will organize the holiday decorations for Main Street. Fleischmanns First decided to buy two more lighted snowflakes to be placed on the pole next to the Eastern Fleischmanns Village sign so that there is visibility from Route 28. A discussion regarding spruc-ing up the Post Office/Supermarket building took place. Yvonne will reach out to the owner and the painter who did the mural in Arkville.

Treasurer and VP Winifred Zubin reported on our finan-cials. We are on budget as planned for events. There is a budget for community projects and grants that is as yet untapped. Please contact Winifred or Michelle Sidrane for an application for project funds.

Village update-Todd Pascarella reported as follows:

CFA has been submitted for a study and plans for a Bio-mass heating project.

The tennis courts are completed and that the concession stand and playground are going out for bids.

Bridge Street Pedestrian Bridge plan has been given a go ahead by the Village Trustees.

Theatre is owned by the Village and has just been ap-proved for State and National Landmark status. There is an interested party in the Theater. Anita Rubin recom-mended that the Village consider a net lease whereby the tenet is responsible for the taxes, insurance and mainte-nance so that the Village can exercise control regarding ownership. The meeting asked the Mayor to consult with a real estate attorney in this regard.

Fleischmanns First Invites you to HOWLWEEN!

Join the fun on Saturday, October 25th when Fleischmanns First hosts the 3rd annual set of Hal-loween parties at 1053 Main Street (Mark Bir-mans building across from the supermarket). The childrens party which is free of charge will be from 2- 4pm. The party will feature holiday related spooky and fun

activities including mask making, cookie decorating, the Spider web game, Toss the Body party game, a photo booth, movies, Lim-bo and new this year a Pumpkin Piata. And the grand finale to begin at 3:45 will be a parade of costume clad children walking down Main Street and ending at the Gazebo where attending chil-dren will receive a holiday sur-prise!

Later that evening, at 7pm the Howling begins at the adult party. As in the past this is a BYOB event and guests are asked to bring an appetizer/dish to pass. We provide the soda, seltzer and paper goods. A fee of $10 gets you inside!

Please note the proceeds from the adult party cover the cost of the childrens event!

Fleischmanns First Presence at Cauliflower Festival Fleischmanns First hoisted its tent at the Cauliflower Festival on September 27th to share the news about our work on behalf of Fleischmanns. A poster featuring pictures from recent events in the Village was prepared by Winifred Zubin and attracted many festi-val attendees to our booth. Fleischmanns First shirts were selling briskly and many members stopped by to renew their membership. If by chance you have not sent in your membership dues, please do so soon. We ask for minimum donation of $10 to support the ef-forts of our volunteers and the events free to the Fleischmanns community such as the Howlween party for children which will be held this year on October 25th at 1035 Main Street. Thank you to Winifred Zubin, Carol Birnbaum, Janet Steiglehner, Marilyn Ringel, Michelle and Alan Sidrane and Larry Reilly for volunteering to be on hand at the booth.

The park on Wagner Avenue has a long history with our village. The land, originally owned by the Fleischmann family, was used for equestrian events and starting in 1895 for the then new game of baseball played by the Fleischmanns owned Mountain Athletic Club. Early in the 1900's, the field was also used for military training maneuvers. The early photo, from around 1913, shows the elaborate grandstands. When the family sold their estate and left for good, they donated the land to the Village, which renamed itself Fleischmanns to thank them for their generosity.

A number of years ago the baseball diamond was redone and for several seasons the revived Mountain Athletic Club played Vintage Baseball there. The flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2011 destroyed the baseball field as well as the tennis courts. The tennis courts have just been redone and the rest of the park will be restored with a new playground soon.

Skene Invites Children to Visit the Library

Skene Library offers a large collection of books for children of all ages--from preschool to young adult. While the majority of Skenes programs for children take place over the summer, kids are always wel-come to come in and browse for books, videos, and DVDs. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids to Skene to familiarize them with all that Skene has to offer. Children are encouraged to sign up for a free li-brary card and to check out items from our extensive collection, which includes many great classics of chil-drens literature, as well as recent additions.

Students are welcome to use the four computers, with free printing of school work offered. The Library is actually a great, quiet place to do homework. Skene participates in the 1000 Books Club Program, in cooper-

ation with the Margaretville Central School Library. This program is targeted at preschool and early elementary school children living in our area. Come in and sign up to receive your tote bag and starting selection of books.

Skene is open during the fall as follows: Tuesday-Friday, 1 PM - 5 PM; Saturday 10 AM - 2 PM.

Tennis Anyone!

On Saturday, September 27th, over 60 people attended the formal opening of the Fleischmanns Tennis Courts. Almost three years after the flood which played havoc throughout our Village, the courts have been replaced and are ready for play. A ceremony lead by longtime tennis guru and founder of the Fleischmanns Open, Sindy Becker, took place courtside on a beautiful fall day. Alt-hough leaves have begun to turn and fall, not one appeared on the pristine courts. Sindy thanked everyone who donated to the courts fund and acknowledged the herculean effort of Village Trustees Ben Fenton and Larry Reilly who were responsible for working with FEMA on every last detail required and the Mayor, Todd Pascarella for his leadership.

The monument which had stood by the courts commemorating the donors of an earlier restoration has been updated to include an inscription dedicated to the new courts and donors to the courts replacements. The monument now stands by the entrance to the new courts.

Newly Planted Trees Add to the Community Garden

Nine volunteers gave their time and brawn to plant eight trees donated by Transitions Catskills to Fleischmanns. The trees are dwarf apple trees, four red and four yellow delicious variety. They are planted on the plot of land across from the pool and next to the Fleischmanns Community Garden.

Fleischmanns is grateful to Transitions Catskills for the trees, to Hubbell Brothers for digging the planting wells, to Mayor Pascarella for organizing the effort and to the Fleischmanns First volunteers who helped immediately after the monthly meeting on Saturday October 11th.

Expect to see apple blossoms in the spring and first fruit by the end of the summer next year.

Fleischmanns Alliance for Business FAB: Fleischmanns Alliance for Business has had a productive and busy few months! To date the organiza-tion has worked on several projects, all aimed at developing a sense of awareness for Fleischmanns and its businesses. They include developing a branding strategy and logo, a published brochure listing over 30 12430 businesses, group ad in the Guide, Kaatskill Life and Belleayre Music Festival Playbill, a FAB Facebook page with over 150 followers, a starter FAB website and the initial plans for a kiosk to be place in front of the Skene Library.

All businesses in the 12430 area are encouraged to join and reap the benefits as follows:

Letter from Mayor Pascarella..

Dear Fleischmanns Community, It is great to see people playing tennis again in the park now that the courts are finally complete. With the construction fencing gone and the new railing in place up on Main Street, the park is finally starting to feel more like a park again. More progress will follow soon as we start the concession stand and play-ground reconstruction. I would like to take the opportunity to thank those from Fleischmanns First who helped plant the apple trees, donated by Transitions Catskills, next to the community garden. It was a nice little project that made good use of the space there, and it's always fun to be part of a volunteer effort that's doing some-thing positive in the community.
