“The Only Thing Constant is Change “ - Heraclitus

My President’s messages so far have been centered on what is happening in my life and how I am relating it to the League. This month finds me in the midst of great change. My professional career has taken on a new role as a result of a company-wide reorganization. I start a new job in an area where I do not have a wealth of knowledge. In order to succeed I must quickly gain the confidence of those I have been entrusted to lead while taking the necessary steps to learn the business. A daunting task to say the least. How does this relate to the League? We are asked to take on a new assignment every year of our Active membership. Each new placement brings new teammates, new committee members, and new challenges. Similarly to taking on a new job, we can respond to these changes with apprehension or by embracing the opportunities therein – I call it a target rich environment.

One key to successful leadership is continuous personal change. Personal change is a reflection of our inner growth &

empowerment.” - Robert E. Quinn

The degree of success we find in these new environments is up to each of us. I’d like to think that with each League placement I saw an opportunity to learn more about what JLC had to offer the community and me as “Molly Member”. We typically struggle with change because it requires us to make a personal adjustment. Let’s face it; we are pretty set in our ways! Having to be stretched can be unpleasant but in the end it is typically worth it. We are a few months into the League year. Some of us have been working pretty steadily; others are starting to find their groove. At some point, you may start feeling stretched and I ask that you embrace it. Embrace the change - it’s an opportunity to learn about a new placement, an opportunity to work with new members, an opportunity to be challenged in new ways, and equally important an opportunity to learn about yourself.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” - Marianne Williamson

JLC’s vision, women as catalysts for lasting community change, fosters change in our members and the community. Throughout my League career I’ve been asked to take on tasks that I did not believe I could handle but I utilized the resources available to me and the friends I had made in the League and in the end each placement was a success. As we face change each year, with each new placement we may feel as though we are in over our heads. We may hit bumps in the road or even stumble along the way. Let’s keep in mind that our success depends on our response. If you remember nothing else, always remember that your teammates, your fellow League members, and I have full confidence in your ability to face change and conquer it. As you grow, the League grows and its mission is fulfilled.

The Members of the Month are two peas in a pod that work together so closely we couldn't separate them. These outstanding women were Provisionals just last year and they both stood out as natural, well organized and motivated League leaders. Not only are they in slated positions their first active year in the League, they have the important role of tackling Education and Training, a task that is not small or easy, especially in the wake of last year’s Chair Angela Ballard revolutionizing the program. Education and Training Chair Laura Bass and her Assistant Michelle Sioredas worked with Arrangements Chair Missy Elliott to plan and execute the Leadership Retreat, and they scored a local celebrity, UTC Mocs Men's Basketball Coach Will Wade to speak. This League year they have a sophisticated two-part grant writing workshop, five 'Leadership Series' training events, website training, a history of the Junior League class, and a Digital Photography class planned. They have been working with Recruitment Chair Abby Holt to plan the Just for Fun events for the year. They also collaborated with Provisional Development Committee Chairs Beth Wells and Laurel Powell, who spoke at the Provisional retreat. These two have been working hard all summer and we will benefit as a League from their efforts. See page 6 for coming events. Please make sure to congratulate our September Members of the Month.

25th ANNIVERSARY MINI-GRANTS

For the 25th consecutive year, JLC is accepting applications for its Mini-Grants program. All Hamilton County public school teachers can apply for funding up to $750 generously provided by JLC partner Hamico. Previous grant-winning projects have included postcard geography at Barger Academy, an agriculture science aquaponics greenhouse at Hixson High School, an art creation studio at Orchard Knob Middle School, fishing for good speech at East Hamilton Middle/High, and a number sense imagination station at Allen Elementary. This year, three new health-inspired grants in the amount of $1,500 each were funded by national AJLI partner Kashi to address issues related to JLC's Seeds of Change initiative to address food deserts in Hamilton County. Submissions for these grants might include the planting of sustainable gardens, nutrition education for students and their families, and projects that help improve community food access. Anything is possible! Encourage the educators you know to apply before the October 28 deadline.

Applications are available at www.jlchatt.org.

Have a favorite recipe that only uses three ingredients plus seasonings?

The Kids in the Kitchen Committee wants you to share it! They're compiling a collection of family-friendly recipes that are easy to demonstrate at a portable cooking station and that use ingredients available on the Mobile Market. Think fruit, vegetables, whole grains and dairy in concoctions like smoothies, one skillet entrees and healthy snacks.

Send your recipes to KITK Assistant Chair Amy Autuori at [email protected].

Register for a shift online via the JLC Volunteer Calendar or email Mobile Market Chair Brooke Maedel at [email protected] to add your name to the schedule for watering, weeding and harvesting throughout the season. Actives will receive one credit for every two hours volunteered at the garden.

SACK STUFF FOR HAMILTON COUNTY STUDENTS (Every month on the second Tuesday)

FAMILY NIGHT AT THE FOOD BANK (Every month on the third Thursday)

YOU CAN HELP THE FOOD BANK @ GMMs

When students leave school each Friday afternoon, many of them will not receive a nutritious meal until they return to school on Monday. The Food Bank, in partnership with WDSI Fox 61, provides Sack Packs to area Hamilton County schools filled with macaroni and cheese, granola bars and other items children can eat over the weekend so they can still have balanced nutrition until they return to school. Join your fellow League members at the Food Bank to stuff and prepare the sacks for children the second Tuesday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. Friends and family are invited to participate, too! Note: Minimum age requirement for Sack Stuff volunteers is 12 years old. Maximum spots available are 12 per shift. League members earn 1 membership credit for each two-hour shift. Register online via the JLC Volunteer Calendar.

Each month, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank provides hundreds of emergency food boxes to local families in need of supplemental nutrition. Every third Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., the Food Bank has designated Family Night as an opportunity for families to come together to replenish and prepare their 50-pound Emergency Food Boxes for qualifying Hamilton County families. Your entire family can get involved in the fight against hunger and food deserts right here at home. Note: Minimum age requirement for Family Night volunteers is four years old. If you register your family, please reserve volunteer spots on the JLC website calendar for your entire family, not just yourself, so we can keep within the required maximum of 30 volunteers per shift. League members earn 1 membership credit for each two-hour shift.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank has an ongoing need for nutritious pantry staples for their emergency food boxes, and League members can earn credits for bringing specific nonperishable food items to each month's GMM meetings. To earn points, bring the listed items in the specified sizes and quantities to each GMM. Food donations will only be accepted at the designated GMMs, not before or after, and only the listed items will receive credit. Three units of each food item will earn you one credit (maximum one credit per member per GMM). Pick up a reminder card at the next GMM to keep with your grocery list! Don’t forget, shop at BI-LO with your booster card and the JLC gets the credit!

EDUCATION AND TRAINING & JUST FOR FUN EVENT

Remember: Education & Training & Just for fun events are open to all JLC members.

Join us for a new five-part leadership development series based on Kouzes & Posner’s Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership! With the experience and insight of local Chattanooga leaders, we will delve deep into the practices of Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Each session costs $15, which includes food and drink, and will earn you 4 credits apiece. Although we recommend the full experience, it is not required that you attend all 5 sessions. Model the Way

The first seminar highlighted Model the Way, a concept that stresses leading by example. Joli Anderson, Community Service Director at Baylor School, was our guest speaker. Joli’s Baylor School bio states that she “sees community service as a way to break down racial, religious, cultural, and socio-economic barriers. Baylor students soon learn that by bettering others' lives, their own lives are bettered as well.” This session was September 26. Inspire a Shared Vision

The second seminar, Inspire a Shared Vision, states that exemplary leaders boldly and creatively communicate their dreams for an organization, thus forging a unified purpose with their team. JLC’s own fearless leader, President Tahnika Rodriguez, will be our guest speaker. This session will be held at the Chattanooga Food Bank Pavilion, a partner site of JLC’s Community Impact initiative Seeds of Change, on Thursday, October 17, 6 - 8 p.m. Challenge the Process

The third seminar highlights Challenge the Process, which states that exemplary leaders look outward for innovative ways to improve, experiment and take risks, and constantly attempt to generate small wins. Corinne Hill, Executive Director of the Chattanooga Library, will be our guest speaker. Corinne’s bio: “I want to see the Chattanooga Public Library completely re-define what a public library can do for its community. I want the public library to be the cultural hub of the city, but I also want it to be a place where the community can build content, not just consume content.” This session will be held at the downtown Chattanooga Library, 4th Floor, on Thursday, November 21, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart

The fourth and fifth seminars, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart, are still “under construction.” Enable Others to Act is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, and supports the theme that leadership is a team effort. When leaders involve others in decision making and goal setting, and build teams with spirit, cohesion, and a trued sense of community, they make it possible for teamwork, trust, and empowerment to flourish. Encourage the Heart outlines the importance of inspiring others with courage and hope, especially since getting extraordinary things done in organizations is sometimes frustrating and emotionally exhausting. This final session is scheduled for Thursday, February 20, 6 - 8 p.m.
