The official start of Phuket’s high season is now only a month away, and as Airports of Thailand officially reported that Phuket International Airport saw a record breaking 1 million passengers pass through in the month of August you have to wonder what kind of figures are going to pass come through come the busiest months if December and January, and whether the amounts are going to put too much pressure on the already over strained facility.
October figures should give a little insight into what to expect come the busy months, as for 9 days of October, 5th until 13th, Phuket sees its annual Vegetarian Festival, an event which year on year see growing amounts of visitors. If a so called low season month such as August can see 1 million passengers pass through the airport, you can be certain that October and the following months will also see record breaking figures.

BAAN CHINPRACHA - The first building of its kind to be
built on the island. This elegant Sino-Portuguese mansion is located
on Krabi Road. The sixth generation of the original owners still
lives there and certain areas of the house are open to the public.
Opening hours are from 09:00-16:30 every day except Sunday, and
there is small entrance fee.
SHRINE OF THE SERENE LIGHT – or Ting Kwan Tang is
over 120 years old and is hidden down a tiny alleyway. The shrine has
been renovated and opened to the public early in 2013.The shrine
features colorful intricate sculpture made from bits of colored
porcelain. It is located on Thalang Road very close to the On On Hotel and
admission is free.
We understand that some visitors here who dreamed of arriving at a tropical paradise may be disappointed when they first step onto the
island. Along with the thick and fast development happening around the edge of town and the beach fronts, we don’t think massive air
conditioned superstores, high-end restaurants, luxury hotels, or cabaret shows are what every visitor expects to see.
Phuket life, real Phuket life is what many visitors come to see, isn’t it?
This is a good reason to spend a day lingering around Phuket Town. If you’re staying near a beach reaching Phuket Town by taxi can be nearly
1,000Baht, a much cheaper alternative is a Po Tong, a pick-up converted into a bus which run from the beaches to Phuket Town. The Po Tong station
is located at the market on Ranong Road and this is an ideal place to start your tour of the town.
The Old Town is made up of five roads in the center of town. These are Rasada Rd, Phang Nga Rd, Thalang Rd, Dibuk Rd, and Krabi Rd. The town was
built in late 19th century when tin mining was booming, thus the community had a mix of nationalities. One was a unique mix of Hokkien Chinese
and Thai called ‘Baba’ and the old town features the homes of these affluent Baba people and they offer a glimpse into their opulent lifestyles and
also their customs and traditions.
Grandiose Sino-colonial mansions are also a dominating feature. Some of them have been turned into trendy shop houses, restaurants, quaint
cafes, museums and art galleries. History is to be found around every corner in the old town and below is some places which you really shouldn’t
miss.

AMULETS MARKET - This can be found down a tiny alley off Rassada Road in Phuket Town, not far from the Fountain Circle and adjacent to the Krung Thai Bank. This is where religious amulets, charms, and talismans are sold. Here you can see faithful believer’s squatting down with their magnifying glasses to study tiny images of the Buddha. It is great fun to see and makes an excelling pit stop while walking around the old town.
SOI ROMANEE - This road is full of colorful renovated buildings, and it was once a red light district for the Chinese laborers who came to work in the tin mines. Some shophouses have been turned into chic bars, while some continue to be what they were originally such as old style barbers. Today, all the electric and phone cables have been put underground and it is one of the most popular location for romantic pre-wedding photo shoots.
THAI HUA MUSEUM - This is also on Krabi Road and is less than five minutes walk from Baan Chinpracha. At first it was a Chinese-language school but it has since been renovated and is now a museum which exhibits various aspects of Phuket’s history. Highlights include a short film about the Phuket-China connection which has English subtitles. Opening Hours are 09:00 – 17:00 daily and admission is 200 Baht

Travel & Eateries06 in Phuket, October 2013
Staying in a hotel room may become a little boring for some, so how about lying on the deck of a boat, sailing to visit different locations, whilst feeling the heat of the sun and the sea breeze blowing on your skin, and anchoring up at night and staring at the star filled sky above?
IIt’s an experience in which, depending on your mood, you can
choose where you want to be and how you wish to spend your
time. If you want peace and quiet, you can visit one of the many
deserted beaches. If you are in more of a partying mood, you can
watch the sunset from a seafood restaurant and then attend a beach party
or dance till sunrise in a nightclub.
Bareboat Yacht Charter also known as independent charters. This
is an option which allows experienced sailors to sail where and when they
please. They provide the utmost freedom and privacy. Sailing licenses are not
mandatory for most charter companies, however the charterer is required
to have a minimum of three years sailing experience as a skipper and there
will also has to be a required refundable security deposit or damage waiver
option. One or two days practice with a local skipper for familiarization is also
possible if needed.
Sailing yachts that available for bareboat come in different types and sizes.
You can find anything from 30 foot single hulls up to 50ft catamarans which
can accommodate 10-12 crew members. Motor yachts are not yet allowed for
bareboat charters. Most bareboats are fully equipped and come with a dinghy
and outboard engine. At the start of your yacht charter there will be full
briefing about the boat and the sailing area.
Sailing schools and regattas - you have zero knowledge about
sailing there are companies that offer sailing courses. They are short, fun
courses that teach you the basics of sailing, and you will be surprised how
capable you are of guiding a small yacht which could change your holiday
forever. Advance courses including race training are also available.
Where and when to catch the wind?Phuket lies 8 degrees north of the equator and experiences mild tropical
weather. The winds generally blow from the northeast in the dry season
months, which are from November until April. During this time it is possible
to sail in all parts of the area, including the West coast of Thailand and the
famous Surin & Similan Islands, known for their great diving locations! The
days are generally blue skies in the day and clear starry skies at night.
March and April can be very sunny, with absolutely no rain and rather light
breezes; so it is ideal for sailors who like flat seas.
BOATING IN PHUKET (PART I: BAREBOAT SAILING HOLIDAY)
In the “Green season”, which falls from May to October, the wind turns and comes generally
from the south west direction. Fortunately being blessed with mild weather Phuket does not experi-
ence cyclones or typhoons and the weather in this season is often pleasant with some rainfall.
Although the Andaman Sea coast is unsuitable for sailing during this time, Phang Nga Bay, off
Phuket’s East Coast, provides a sheltered, calm and enchanting place to cruise. With its numerous
islands, all unique in formation, this makes a great cruising area by any one’s standards. This is
one reason most boats are based on the west coast of Phuket offering possibilities to cruise all
year round.

La Carbonara Ristorante Pizzeria – Authentic Italian Cuisine at a Reasonable Price
Hailing from central Italy, Valentina & Francesco
are managing director/host and chef of
Ristorante Pizzeria, La Carbonara, located
at Foxtail Plaza, Rim Had Road, Kamala.
This spacious restaurant with indoor and outdoor
seating is comfortable with its tables set out so all
diners can dine in private, whilst enjoying a typically
Italian homely atmosphere which Valentina & Francesco
focus so hard on providing.
The menu here is heavily influenced by northern Italian
cuisine but of course they also serve some classis Italian
dishes.
Most of the main ingredients used at la Carbonara
are imported from Italy, the vegetables are all organic
and the pasta homemade on the premises.
For my visit I decided on the Antipesto Misto
Carbonara, a selection of cold cuts & cheeses, melon
and flatbread nicely presented on a wooden
serving board. From the taste of the meats and cheese
you could tell that they use only the best imported
products, surprising considering the average price of
a meal here is a reasonable 300 baht. For main i
was recommended the Spaghetti Carbonara, and
i wasn’t disappointed, the pasta was served with
just the right amount of sauce which had a perfect
amount of flavours from the bacon, Pecorino
cheese and black pepper and was as authentic
as it could possibly be. I only had a beer to go
with my meal but they do have a fantastic drinks
menu with a range of wines to suit all budgets.
Along with the menu they also have a small
number of dishes on their special board which
changes at least twice a week, as well as regular
nightly specials which are promoted on their
Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/
LaCarbonaraphuket?fref=ts).
All in all both the food and service was
excellent, and if you’re in any doubt or perhaps
think I’m being biased, just check out La Carbonara’s
reviews on TripAdvisor.com or go along for yourself.

The word PANAENG takes its name from the city island in Malaysia
“Penang”. It is a much richer, sweeter and creamier than any other
Thai curries. Peanut is a signature flavor in this curry, but can be
omitted if you are allergic.
PROCEDURE
1. Heat the coconut cream in a wok for
about 20 seconds. Add curry paste and
fry for about 1 minute or until fragrant.
Add the prawns and stir well until the
prawns cling to the paste, fry for a further
30 seconds.
2. Pour in the coconut cream and chicken
stock and bring to the boil. Then season
with the sugar, fish sauce and half the
shredded kaffir lime leaves. Taste and
adjust the flavour as required and remove
from the heat.
3. Serve and garnished with the
remaining shredded kaffir lime leaves
and chilli strips.

and deveined

between China, India and South East Asia and a large number of Chinese
immigrants came to work at the tin mines and rubber plantations. At
this time, there was a group of Chinese opera singers who had come to
entertain the workers and it was during the Chinese ninth lunar month
that Phuket was hit with an epidemic which caused many of the group to
become very sick. After some time it was realised that they had forgot-
ten to pay homage to two of the emperor gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok
Ong Sone Teh. The traveling opera then knew that they would have to
observe a strict vegetarian diet. The traveling opera all recovered from the
sickness. The people of Phuket were so amazed that vegetarian ritual, with
its ceremonies, had resolved the problem and they therefore embraced the
faith enthusiastically. Thus the festival began on the first evening of the
ninth lunar month and continued until the ninth evening and has done ever
since. Today, the belief is that the festival will bring good luck to individuals
who partake as well as to their communities.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is the most talked about vegetar-
ian festival and probably can only be described as mind-blowing.
This dramatic celebration takes place during the first nine days of the
ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which this year falls from
October 5th to October 13th.
This auspicious grand event sees the whole island taken over by the
white clothed devotees. For nine days they convert to vegetarians, and
follow the tradition of refraining from killing animals for food, drinking
alcoholic drinks, engaging in sex, quarreling or telling lies in order to
purify their minds and bodies.
Throughout the festival wafting smoke fills the air and drums are
sounded, especially during ceremonies. It is believed that the louder
they are the better, because the noise drives away evil spirits. Some of the
highlights of the festival are the ear splitting sound of firecrackers,
lion dances and incredible acts of self -mortification such as climbing
knife ladders, walking on hot coals, a ritual bridge crossing and street
processions through the main roads of Phuket Town in which the
mediums, in a state of trance, have their cheeks pierced and bodies spiked
with various types of sharp objects like large knives, skewers and other
household items without showing any signs of pain. This is definitely not
recommended for the faint hearted.
Although the true origins of the festival are unclear it is believed that
it originated in the south-eastern part of China near Fujian Province
but first came to Phuket in 1825 when the island was a trade center

Enforcing aforeign court’s verdict in Thailand.E nforcing a foreign court’s verdict in Thailand is not an easy
process. As an example, imagine you have filed a case
overseas and a foreign court has ordered a Thai defendant to
pay compensation. Internationally, there are guiding concepts that allow
for verdicts to potentially be imposed in a different jurisdiction; however,
there are few standard conventions. Thailand has no treaties in place, so it
falls to the courts to determine the applicability of a foreign verdict. The
general practice is that the foreign nation’s judgment will not be upheld
unless local law requirements are clearly met.
The four principal concepts with which an individual can seek to enforce
a verdict in another country are as follows. In Thailand, only the fourth
avenue is available:
1. A foreign court’s verdict can be used and enforced in another country
without any need to file an application to the court. The foreign court’s
verdict can be enforced and issued by the court within the country.
2. A foreign court’s verdicts can be used and enforced in another country
only when the territorial court considers the said verdicts or orders are not
conflicting or prohibited by their law or contrary to public order / good
morals.
3. A country court will accept the other foreign court’s verdicts or orders
dependent upon the relationship between that country and the comity of
nations.
4. A foreign court’s verdicts and orders can only be used as evidence in
the territorial court trial. If you want to enforce them, you have to file an
application to the court as a new case.
Generally, verdicts or orders from a foreign court are not enforceable in
Thailand because they are granted outside of Thailand’s court jurisdiction
and there are currently no existing treaties. In order to enforce a particular
verdict, the ruling from the case must be submitted as evidence to the
court (only the verdict is required). The evidence is used to show that a
case trial is unnecessary, as the court is not readdressing the case, but only
considering the final verdict.
There are three rules that must be followed in order for the Thai court to
accept and enforce the foreign court’s verdict or order. These are as follows:
1. The foreign court who issued the verdict or orders must have jurisdiction
over the case.
2. The verdicts or orders must be analyzed to determine that there is an
appropriate cause for dispute.
3. The verdicts or orders must be final with no further proceedings
available to either party.
Despite the difficulties in this process, enforcing a foreign verdict in
Thailand is a viable option. You should seek out credible legal counsel who
has the expertise to manage this process for you.

ARCHERY AND ITS LEGENDARY FUN IS AVAILABLE ON THE ISLAND
In the last few years arrows have been hitting the big screen in films
and our hearts have been filled with the strained bows by the likes
of Legolas, Son of Thranduil of Mirkwood (The Lord of The Rings),
Katniss Everdeen from District 12 (The Hunger Games), Princess
Merida of Clan DunBroch (Brave), Neytiri Princess of the Omaticaya
Tribe on the world of the Na’vi (Avatar), Susan Pevensie (The Chronicles of
Narnia) and top archer Robin of Loxley.
It has become pretty clear that archery is a sport that is having quite a
big moment at this time. The first known use of bows and arrows, usually
for the hunting of animal, dated as far back as the Stone Ages. In later
years armies used them as weapons. Many of the most successful armies
in earlier centuries such as the Persian, Japanese and even Roman were
successful because of the large amount of archers in their military. In fact,
Native Americans used bows as weapons since the 1800’s, and in view of
the Archery is probably one of mankind most ancient tools which soon
spread around the world. And today, archery isn’t treated simply as a social
activity, but as a national sport even in countries such as South Korea and
Bhutan.
Archery first appeared in the Olympics in 1900 but it went away, it returned
in 1972 and has remained as an Olympic sport ever since, with Korea and
the United States being the two most successful countries in the competition
at the moment. However, to excel and enjoy archery you don’t have to be
a professional athlete, unlike some male-dominated sports. To get started
you require focus and patience rather than strength.

Luckily, Phuket offers a chance for those interested in fulfilling their
action movie fantasies with the Phuket Archery Club (Phuket AC) which
was founded in July 2010 and is a registered member of the Sport
Association of Phuket. The club is located in Phuket Town and here you
can discover all about your shooting instinct. Phuket Archery Club is a
family oriented range where people of all ages are welcome, especially
children aged 8 or over. At the club, senior and junior members all shoot
together and therefore more experienced archers are there to look
out and assist newer and younger members. Once in a while national
archers are also invited to come and train members and give secrets
and tips about special techniques.
For those new to archery a taster session called the “Discovery Course”
is available at a very cheap fee, just enough to help the club keeps
running the range and repair the equipment and backstops. It is about
an hour session which provides an introduction into archery, the safety
rules, types of bows and a shooting trial.
Three types of bows are available to try; a recruve, traditional and
the most powerful, a compound. Archery can be fun and exciting
especially for kids, and when conducted properly, is very safe.
Injuries occur in less than one out of every 1,000 people who
participate in the sport. It develops ones physical attributes and,
at the same time, keenness in observation, analysis, and calculation
are developed or enhanced. Besides physical benefits children
involved in archery have the advantage of gaining social and emo-
tional benefits such as character development, respect for others, habit
formation, etc.

SEABREEZE SEAFOOD BUFFET SEEING IS BELIEVING
Each and every Tuesday and Saturday night,
Seabreeze Cafe, the flagship restaurant
of the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket , Patong
, offers a real treat for lovers of seafood with their
Sumptuous ‘Seafood Buffet’.
Now, when one imagines a buffet dinner, one usually
thinks of large steel trays of premade dishes kept
warm under a heater for who knows how long, and
once emptied replaced with another identical dish.
But with the Seabreeze Seafood Buffet, while selected
dishes are pre-cooked for convenience, the majority
of the items are cooked to order, yes a buffet that
actually allows diners to choose their ingredients and
have a dish cooked there in front of them.
When it comes to what’s available at this amazing
buffet dinner there is so much on offer that it’s easier
to mention what’s not available, but what would be
the point. There is such an astounding array of fresh
Andaman produce for you, yes truly fresh, that upon
a first visit the whole experience may seem like a
daunting one, but don’t worry as one of the helpful
and knowledgeable staff will always be on hand to
lead the way.
Start in the cold room and choose from a range
of salads, sushi, sashimi , fresh marinated mussels
and oysters. Then move onto the carving station
where whole roasted local fish with herbs, garlic &
tomatoes awaits. Or if it’s freshly prepared treiyaki
you desire, move onto the grill and select your
ingredients and wait as the chefs prepare your dish
right in front of your eyes. If the belly isn’t yet full
enough then there’s always the BBQ hotplate with its
selection of the freshest local caught shellfish. There
is of course a selection of delightful desserts to finish
off the meal.
Seeing really is believing at the Sumptuous Seabreeze Seafood Buffet, and at only 899 per person it is something which visitor’s to Phuket
can afford to eat but cannot afford to miss.

WHISPER: THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF SOCIAL NETWORK
Millions of people all around the world use social networks to connect with their friends, meet new people, share images and videos, play games and a whole lot more. Unfortunately, there are a lot of privacy issues with the big social networks. People are becoming increasingly worried about their personal data that they voluntarily provide to social networks like Facebook and Twitter. If you want to use a social network that allows you to stay anonymous, you should take a look at a new site called Whisper.
What is Whisper?Whisper is a new social network that allows us to stay anonymous whilst posting
our experiences, thoughts, and feelings. It’s a bit different from other social networks
because you don’t share your personal information. You can share all your darkest
secrets and never be worried that somebody will find out it’s you!
It works a bit differently from the popular social networks like Facebook. Basically,
you can share your thoughts using photos and then type on top of the photo using
an array of different fonts. It has been described as “A Pinterest for Memes” (Quota-
palooza).
What makes it fun?One of the best things to do on this social network is to scroll down the page and
take a look at the kind of things that people confess to. If you find a picture that you
like, you also have the opportunity to share it on Tumblr, Facebook or Twitter.
Probably the biggest bonus about this social network that is really is a place to vent
your ideas and thoughts and actually have freedom of speech over everything you
say. Even today, we are not free to say some of the things we’d like to, not because it’s
illegal, but because we fear the scrutiny of our family and friends. Here, you can say
absolutely anything you want and not have to worry about a thing.
What makes it better for privacy? If you already use Facebook, you’ll have noticed that your account is set to public, unless you change the settings to private. Even still, Facebook still know
your name, where you are and what you like. This information can be used to push advertising in your face, or even passed onto the authorities when they
put in a request.
Whisper, on the other hand, won’t even ask your name. When you post, it says that the post came from ‘Near New York’, for example. This really is truly anony-
mous and if you’re the kind of person that worries about your online anonymity but still want to share your thoughts and ideas sometimes, there really is
no better place to do other than Whisper.
Whisper is probably the first 100% anonymous social network and if privacy is your thing, then this is the social network for you.
To use Whisper you do need to download the app for your iPhone or Android phone, at the moment you can’t reply to people or post your own ‘whispers’
on your computer.
