Dear Friends,This autumn we welcome Bishop Ken Good as he and his wife Mary

come to celebrate their marriage, 35 years after their wedding in StPeter’s Church. We congratulate them and wish them every happinessand God’s blessings on the next 35 years of married life! While they arehere, Ken has kindly offered to preach and so we have arranged to haveour harvest service at 3.30pm in St Peter’s on Sunday 14th October, followed by a harvest supper with a little folk dancing in the ParishCentre. But that is not all.

UNITED CELEBRATION SPECIAL- SUNDAY 14TH OCTOBER 10.30 TO 12.00Earlier in the day we have a special United Celebration BEGINNING at 10.30am when Kenspeaks to us about vision and church development, and how as a church we can discern God’swill for us His people.

As individuals God’s Guidance is never easy and Nicky Gumbel’s teaching in the Alpha course isreally helpful .He explains his points with five CS’s one of which is the “Counsel of Saints.” Theidea is that when looking for guidance it is essential that we take advice and ask others withwisdom to help us. The church (i.e. “the saints” as the New Testament describes God’s people)is no different. Traditionally we have trusted the judgement and the wisdom of the SelectVestry and the clergy, which is important. But all too often there is not enough time to pray, reflect on what we are doing and look ahead to what we should be doing – especially given theaccelerating changes that are taking place in society. We cannot assume that what we havealways meant by “church” will be appropriate in the future. Even now, are we really tuning intothe cultural shifts that are taking place? So this year, the Select Vestry has considered thesetting up of a Vision and Development Group (“Vision Group” for short) and Ken comes tohelp us make progress. (In this Newsletter you can read about the Select Vestry proposals).

Here is an outline of this Special United Service:

10.30 Worship and Welcome10.45 Talk by Bishop KenLessons for God’s People to Discover His Will andPurposes—from John 15 looking at:

• The Qualities required for the Members of theVision Group

• Discernment• The relationship to the Select Vestry and the

wider Church11.10 Buzz groups over a cup of coffee11.35 Worship Song11.40 Feedback11.55 Worship Song

(Please note children will have a film in the Meeting Room.Matt has offered to keep an eye on proceedings!)

Afterwards the Select Vestry will:• Nominate their members for the Vision group,• Listen to the feedback and proceed to receive

nominations following the Dedication Sundayon 4 November.

So looking ahead……

TEARFUND IRELANDVisiting Speaker

Sunday 28th October

Our HarvestCollectionwill go toTearfund

On Sunday October 28th, CarrigrohaneUnion will be hosting Niamh Daly fromTearfund Ireland who will bespeaking at all 4 services that day!Assuming her voice holds out, she willbe speaking about the work ofTearfund, particularly focussing on anew program Tearfund has introducedcalled “Connected Church”. Thisprogram seeks to build closer linksbetween individual churches here inIreland and specific sponsored organi-sations abroad. Niamh is Director ofCommunications with Tearfund Ireland, having joined them in 2011. She has 3daughters and writes: “What excitesme most about the work of Tearfund isthat it uses a really good developmentmodel that works through the localchurch. I love working for an agencythat ultimately depends on the Lord ineverything it does. Working withextremely poor communities strugglingto feed themselves and yet relying onthe Lord as ‘the bread of life’ is hugelyhumbling.”
