Painting the murals not only makes our school a more beautiful place but helps students take ownership of the building. Youngsters may be inattentive as they cross the street to enter or exit a bus. The staff here at Wahluke School District reminds motorists to use extra caution when driving in school zones. Watch for children, slow down and pay attention.

*LIGHTTHEWAYMotorists know that a yellow traffic light means prepare to stop if possible

and red light means stop. School bus warning lights mean the same thing: • flashing yellow lights mean CAUTION, the bus is preparing to

stop, • flashing red lights mean STOP, school children are boarding or leav-

ing the school bus. It is a traffic violation to drive past a stopped school bus when the red

lights are flashing.

PEDESTRIANSAFETY• Cross the street at the corner or at a crosswalk if there is one, and

obey all traffic signals. • Walk on a sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder of

the roadway away from traffic.

Wahluke Food Service program Changes to provision 2

WhAt iS prOViSiON 2?Provision 2 is an option in the federal School Breakfast Program and National

School Lunch Program for schools to reduce the paperwork and simplify the lo-gistics of operating school meal programs. Provision 2 schools do not have to collect and process school meal applications, keep track of meal categories, or conduct verifications for at least three out of every four years. Schools that opt for Provision 2 serve meals to all students at no charge. Provision 2 schools pay the difference between the cost of serving meals at no charge to all students and the federal reimbursement. The significant administrative savings of Provision 2 help offset the cost differential.

FLu ANd COLd SeASON tipS As we get closer to cold and flu season, we would like to share a few tips

on how to keep your children and the rest of the family healthy. Teach your children and the rest of your family to wash their hands with soap and water frequently especially after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom. Hand washing is the best way to limit the spread of germs. Cover your mouth with a tissue or sneeze into your elbow to limit the spread of germs.

If your child just doesn’t feel good, it is a good idea to keep him or her at home. Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea means they should stay home until 24 hours has passed with no symptoms. Children with fevers 100* F or higher should be kept home until they can go 24 hours with no fever without the use of medications to reduce the fever.

If you need a thermometer, please contact the school and leave a mes-sage with either the nurse or the secretary. We are being provided with thermometers from the Grant County Health Department. We also have a large supply of toothbrushes, so please contact us with how many you need if that is an item that is needed as well.

Afterschool intramuralsfor K-6 StudentsAfterschool Intramurals for October are up and running with nearly 200

students in grades K-6 participating. Kids this month are enjoying wrestling, baseball/softball, art, guitar,

board games, TaeBo, keyboarding, and Language.Afterschool intramurals are offered in three week sessions - the next

Interrogate Reality

Theatre Opportunity for Local StudentsThe Missoula Children’s Theatre will be coming to Mattawa to cast the

local students (K-12) in the production “Cinderella.”The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), the nation’s largest touring

children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for 38 years from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,300 communities this year with up to 35 teams of Tour Actor/Directors.

The team holds an open audition and casts 50-60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented at the end of the week.

All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales… a twist on the classic stories you know and love. MCT’s mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.

Auditions for this Theatre experience will be held October 31st, rehears-als will run the entire week of October 31st through November 4th, with two community showings on November 5th.

Be looking for an article in the MAN and flyers coming home with your student from school with more specific information such as time and place.

All students K-12 both in the Wahluke School District and out, are encouraged to audition for a role in this year’s production. For more information please call 932-4433.

ipad Classroom pilot projectThis year with one of our grants we are piloting classroom sets of iPads. Students

in Ms. Beerbower’s, Ms. McEver’s, Mrs. Hamilton’s, and Mr. Estalilla’s classrooms are experiencing the classrooms of the future! Some futurists estimate that in 20 years or less paper books will not be commonly used in schools. These Wahluke students will be using iPads to study math, reading, writing, social studies, and geography. The primary objectives of the pilot project are to determine:

• How the iPad supplements the curriculum • How “digital textbooks” can be integrated in the classroom • A set of best practices for implementing the iPad into the classroom • If the iPad is a tool that can effectively engage today’s learners and en-

hance their academic success The sky’s the limit! Be sure to check out the iPad pilots webpage to follow each

classroom’s twitter stream. I don’t know of a district in our region that’s doing what we are doing with technology. Our iPads, smart boards and clicker technology is setting the bar very high.

Wahluke School District is proud to announce that it has been awarded the CAROL M. WHITE PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM (PEP) GRANT. This grant will provide exceptional opportunities within physical education for Wahluke students.

PEP grants are awarded to local education associations and community-based organizations. They focus on initiating, expanding, or improving physi-cal education programs, including after-school programs, for K-12 students. In order to help students make progress toward meeting Washington State Health and Fitness Learning Standards, the Wahluke School District plans to build on and expand nutrition, fitness, and education programs in the district.

This is exciting for the district as this is the fourth year we have applied for this grant. The average number of years it takes to be accepted for this grant has been six years. A hardworking School Improvement Team, led by Wahluke High School P.E. teacher and Athletic Director Jeff Ahmann, teamed up with Focused Fitness, a private grant writing organization, to get the job done.

The competition for this grant is fierce. Across the nation 575 schools applied and only 75 were selected recipients. Wahluke was one of five schools in the State of Washington to be awarded. Over the next three years Wahluke will receive $606,723 to support specific programs at Wahluke. A budget award of $326,268 was made available 10/1/2011 and goes through 9/30/2012. This financial support is very much appreciated and comes at a time when every penny counts.

Implementation of the project will include the following action items: 1. Convene a School Health Advisory Committee to review and

strengthen district policies while providing governance and support during program change;

2. Implement a standards-based physical education curriculum and

fitness software system and provide staff training in curriculum implementa-tion and quality instruction and assessment;

3. Create safe physical environments that promote social and emotional health through participation in physical activities provided in and outside the school day;

4. Provide nutrition, fitness, and physical activity opportunities and education to students, families, and community members in and outside of school.

Wahluke School District is always moving forward and looking for ways to improve the student, school, and community environment. This grant is an-other step toward helping all students excel in their educations and lives.

Que es Provisión 2?Provisión 2 es una opción en el Programa de Desayunos Escolares federal y el

Programa de Almuerzo Escolar Nacional para que las escuelas reduzcan el papeleo y simplifiquen la operación de los programas de comida. Escuelas en Provisión 2 no tiene que recoger y tramitar las solicitudes de comidas, hacer un seguimiento de las categorías de comida, o realizar verificaciones por lo menos tres de cada cuatro años. Ensene a sus hijos y el resto de su familia a lavarse las manos con agua y jabón frecuentemente, especialmente después de estornudar, toser o usar el baño. Lavarse las manos es la mejor manera de limitar la propagación de gérmenes. Cubra su boca con un pañuelo o estornude en su codo para limitar la propagación de gérmenes.

Si su hijo no se siente bien, es una buena idea que él o ella permanezca en su hogar. Nauseas, vómitos o diarrea significa que debe quedarse en casa hasta 24 horas han pasado sin síntomas. Los niños con fiebre 100*F o mas deben per-manecer en casa hasta que ellos puedan estar 24 horas sin fiebre sin el uso de medicamentos para reducir la fiebre.

El Distrito Escolar de Wahluke está orgulloso de anunciar que ha sido galardo-nado con la Subvención de Carlo M. White Physical Education Program. Esta subvención proporcionara oportunidades excepcionales dentro la educación física para los estudiantes de Wahluke.

Un Equipo de Mejoramiento muy trabajador, dirigido por Jeff Ahmann, Director De Atlético y maestro de Educación Física en la Preparatoria, se asociaron con Focus Fitness, un organización privada que ayuda a otorgar subvenciones, para lograr este trabajo.

La competencia para esta subvención es feroz. En todo el país, 575 escuelas solicitaron y solo 75 fueron otorgadas la subvención. Wahluke fue una de las cinco escuelas en el estado de Washington que la recibió. Durante los próximos tres años Wahluke recibirá 606, 723 dólares para apoyar programas específicos en Wahluke. OpOrtuNidAdeS de teAtrO pArA eStudiANteS LOCALeS

El Missoula Children’s Theatre va a venir a Mattawa para audicionar a estudiantes locales (K-12) en la producción de “Cinderella” (La Cenicienta).

Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), el teatro viajador más grande del país para niños, ha estado viajando extensamente los pasados 38 años de Montana a Japón, y visitara cerca de 1,300 comunidades este año con hasta 35 equipos de Actores/Directores.

El equipo tiene una audición abierta y toman 50-60 estudiantes locales para llevar a cabo en la producción. La obra se ensaya durante toda la semana y dos actua-ciones públicas se presentan al final de la semana. Todas la obras de MCT son adaptaciones originales de los cuentos clásicos para niños y cuentos de hadas…. con un torcido a las historias clásicas que conocemos y amamos.

La misión de MCT es el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida en los niños medi-ante la participación en las artes escénicas. Las audiciones para esta experiencia de teatro se llevara a cabo el 31 de octubre, los ensayos serán toda la semana del 31 de octubre al 4 de noviembre, con dos presentaciones a la comunidad el 5 de noviembre. Fíjense por el artículo en el MAN y volantes llegaran a casa de las escuelas con los estudiantes con más información específica, como el tiempo y lugar.

Todos los estudiantes K-12, tanto en el distrito de Wahluke o fuera, son animados a una audición para un papel en la producción este año. Para más información por favor llame al 932-4433.

Por proporcionar el mejor apoyo posible a los estudiantes “que tienes que amar” en la secundaria, tanto en la supervisión y tutoría en el salón. Nunca hemos conocido un empleado más proactivo, dedicado, flexible, sin nunca quejarse. El personal de la Secundaria es tan afortunado de tenerte en nuestro edificio.

*rochelle Bierek, maestra de tercer grado de la escuela Saddle mountain: Enseñando a los estudiantes a ser reflexivos es el comienzo de tomar responsabi-lidad por su propio aprendizaje. Yo agradezco el tiempo y trabajo que ha puesto en preparación para aprender acerca de las aplicaciones y el software que mantiene a los estudiantes moviéndose en el aprendizaje y en la preparación para la vida en la era de la tecnología.

mostrando mejoría de estudiantes en casi toda categoría. Cada grafico muestra los resultados de prueba para el mismo grupo de estudiantes matriculados de

Wahluke Students Making Gains Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) results were released showing stu-

dent improvement from the previous year in almost every category. Each graph shown represents test results for the same group of continuously enrolled students beginning with their first State assessments in 3rd grade (or 4th grade for those students above 10th grade). For example, for the Current 5th Grade Student Cohort graph represents test results for the same enrolled students on their 3rd grade test and then those same enrolled students on their 4th grade test. You will notice that in most areas our students increased from the previous year and also increased over time in comparison to state level results. As a District, we use this data to assess our strengths and develop our improvement strategies. One of those strategies is to instill attainable goals for each of our students, just ask them “What’s my goal?”
