NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

October Message

This month’s message is mostly directed to the 173 new members our fraternity has welcomed over the last two years. You have chosen to join an organization that at its core is one of the finest in all the land. First, I want you to understand that you haven’t just joined a chapter, you have indeed joined a Fraternity. Pioneers in Brotherhood is how we promote ourselves and I can tell you that if you do any traveling to other chapters besides your home chapter you will find this all to be true. Each chapter is assigned a National Coordinator so find out who yours is and don’t hesitate to contact him if you have any questions about our fraternity.

This fraternity allows each member to be as active as he wants to be, but having said that, I hope that all of you will be very active in your chapters, as well as becoming involved in national issues, because to be perfectly honest, we need the help. Each of our chapters is, for the most part self governing which sets us apart from many other organizations, supporting any local charities that they may choose, while still being able to operate under our corporate umbrella.

I would suggest to all of you to go to our website www.phideltakappa.org and read the Road to Bagdad which will give you a good idea of where and how our fraternity was founded. Each of you has an email address set up through our website, with the ability to have email forwarded to any other email address you have. We will be using this in order to get members information about the goings on in the fraternity, so please get with your chapter officers or national coordinator to find out how to get your account activated. I urge all of you to attend your chapter meetings and express your ideas and concerns about your chapter and our fraternity in general. Again we need the help.

In closing I invite any member who would like to talk to me to call me at 765-546-0877 or contact me at [email protected]. We will be having our fall SEC meeting this month at Mississippi Alpha in Meridian Mississippi. If you can attend, I can guarantee you will have a great time and make new friends that will last a lifetime. Until next month, always looking forward,

Craig BrutoutNational President

H o w d y , brothers and sisters. It is October and I am beginning to feel the weather start-ing to change into cooler nights and shorter days, as well as football on Sundays. Sunday football is one of the best excuses to fellowship there ever was. If your chapter needs some-thing to offer its members, have the chapter house open on Sundays to watch your favorite teams. Offer a carry in and have some type of game that will precede or follow along with the football game that you’re watching. This is a time for bonding and not just for the guys. I have seen Candie, Karen, Betty, Linda, Sarah, and a few other women right there yelling at the refs like they were going to change their minds.

Last month there was a lot of 9/1110th anniversaries memorial going on. I stopped by Plymouth’s 9/11charity event that they put on and they should be applauded for their effort in this endeavor. My topic is anniversaries. The purpose of an anniversary is to mark a special event that one or a group of people don’t want to forget: like to cele-brate one’s marriage, the death of someone, a tragic event, or remem-bering the start of a chapter per-haps. I know there are some chap-ters that celebrate their anniversa-ries like Winchester and Danville (Candie and I look forward to go-ing to both this year and any other

Hello all from now a very rainy Florida. I want to try and com-pare going to your high school class reunion to attend-ing a PDK National Convention. This happened to me last weekend so here goes. First, you hope to see friends from the past, but you get disappointed when some do not make the trip. Reasons were: not interested anymore, economy, lo-cals say I see these people every-

day so why go, feelings of pride to remember your past and what it was to you then are not that important, and probably what I heard the most, was they physi-cally have changed and they are embarrassed to come.

Now on the PDK side some of this is the same. The economy stopped brothers this year from attending Michigan City we all know. Lack of interest we know also is a reason for not attend-ing. PDK is not the center at-traction anymore. Locals not attending this year was one rea-son that could be de-bated. Michigan City had a great show of brothers all weekend, but still more from Indiana could have made the trip. I believe a brother is a brother, whatever his physical appearance may be.

One area that I forgot was health. Both comparisons had that issue to deal with. On the other hand, when we read of members who have passed away I related to PDK, because we will miss those loved brothers forever as I will my classmates.

I'm hoping that you see the point that if being a member of PDK is important, then you will try your best to attend next year's convention to see old friends, meet new ones and par-ticipate, because it is part of you till you pass on. Proud to be a Phi Delt. Sam Agresti National Master of Ceremonies

that will invite us) but most chap-ters don’t have one. Why is that? Like I said in the previous para-graph, what do you have to offer your membership? What does your membership have to look forward to? I think it is nice to have an anniversary dinner every year where people can get dressed up and give special acknowledg-ments or awards: like Phil Delt of the Year, Sweetheart, or any other type of recognition for which a brother or sister in the chapter can be recognized. Anniversaries give us the opportunity to take pride in ourselves and remember that we are brothers.

Fall S.E.C. is at Mississippi Al-pha on October 15, and like al-ways Candie and I are looking forward to going down. We are sorry for Mississippi’s loss of Bob Jones for I know he was an important part of their family.

Thank you,And see you soon,Brian Nelson

CONGRATULATIONS Chris Parks

National Auditor

Hello Broth-e r s a n d Sweethearts! With the con-vention be-hind us, and the fall be-fore us, as we start a new fraternal year I’ve de-cided to return to my series of arti-cles on the values we should all be striving to live up to. After a lot of thought, which is extremely diffi-cult when you only have two brain cells to work with, I think I’ve come up with an appropriate value for not only the officers and trus-tees both national and local but all Phi Delts!

With an ever-growing segment of our society turning into the “where’s mine?” mentality, instead of the “I’m working as hard as I can, but I could use a little help” society, the value that comes to mind is selfless service. So then what is selfless service? Selfless service is when you give of your-self to your organization or fellow manwith no expectation compen-sation, reward, or recognition . Such as DONATING you time for a fundraiser or to help an elderly neighbor because it’s the right thing to do not for personal gain. It’s not for rewarding our selves with parties for working hard, (your employer does that,) it’s for that feeling of self-fulfillment, of making a difference in someone’s life. The most anyone should want is a thank you.

As national officers and trustees we work for the betterment of the fraternity. We travel to chapters to keep them up to date on na-tional issues, to help set up yearly events, to help resolve local is-sues if need be, and on occasions serve as venting outlets when they get frustrated. We have the easy job! It’s the local officers and trustees who have the tough jobs. These brothers are in charge of the day-to-day operations of their chapters. They are the men who have taken on the responsibility of building and maintaining the membership, the upkeep of the chapter house, keeping the lights on. Far too often in struggling chapters, they have been the same brothers for years. This core group of brothers has done what they can, they're tired, frustrated, and waiting on YOU! It’s time for you to stand up and take own-ership of your chapter, show up to a meeting, help plan, support and attend local events, sponsor a new member let the leadership know that YES I’M PROUD TO BE PHI DELT! AND I’M HERE TO HELP! I think you’ll find them overjoyed that they’re not alone. “How will my actions today re-flect on our fraternity tomorrow?”

It’s here! Finally, my fa-vorite time of the year has ar-r i v e d . T h e leaves are turn-ing, the tem-perature is start-ing to drop, and college and pro football are both in full swing. October 1st marks the beginning of deer season (archery) in Mississippi. Football and hunting are what I live for (don’t tell my wife I said that). At the end of Janu-ary, when football and deer seasons are over, I’m already planning for the beginning of the next seasons.

This year may a little different than normal. In these tough times it can be difficult to do all the things that you enjoy. I know that I will not be able to attend any college or pro football games this year. It’s just not in the budget. This may also have an effect on my hunting because it’s a long drive from my house to where I hunt. Sometimes we have to give up the things we love to do in order to bet-ter ourselves or our situation. I may not be able to go to New Orleans to watch the Saints play, but instead, I’ll use this opportunity to go to the chapter house and watch the game with my brothers. If I can’t make it to the deer camp this weekend, I’ll volunteer to cook or help in some other way at the chapter house. Just because you can’t do exactly what you want, it doesn’t mean that you can’t do something you enjoy.

As Phi Delts we occasionally have to give up some of the things we prefer in our chapters from time to time. Change isn’t always bad. If we give a little, sometimes we gain a lot. If you are making sacrifices to better your-self, your chapter, or the fraternity, it can’t be all that bad. Fall SEC is only a couple of weeks away, look forward to seeing every-one, hope to have a good meeting and a great time.

As I was reading up on the history of Phi Delta Kappa, I came across this article from the October 1931 issue of our Phi Delta Kappa Magazine.

Why A Ritual Ceremony?By E. Temp Mattingly(National Master Of Ceremonies)

Practically every fraternal organiza-tion in the country has a ceremony that a new candidate must be con-ducted through before he is consid-ered a member of the organization. With this thought in mind, there of-ten arises in the minds of some Phi Delts and members of other organi-zations a question as to what benefit a ritual service is to a fraternity and to the new man that is being initi-ated.Phi Delta Kappa was founded sev-eral years ago and at the present time has developed into a powerful

organization of young men. Dur-ing the years that have passed we have continued to expand and prosper. However, although we have our dances, conventions, and social events, we must realize that something far greater than these activities has tended to make our fraternity as strong as it is. The ritual service is the one thing that is outstanding in holding Phi Delta Kappa together. Why? Because it is my personal idea that no club may prosper less it is backed by some secret services. Such a rit-ual as the one we have seems to separate us into an individual body and through this ceremony we feel much closer to each other. Should there be no ritual, would we feel as close to a brother when meeting him for the first time? Our ritual does nothing more than to tie all members of Phi Delta Kappa into one big happy family.

Therefore, since this ritual is so essential to the welfare of our fra-ternity, isn’t it correct to say that each individual chapter should take the utmost pride in its presen-tation. The responsibility of seeing that a ritual service is put on as it should be is placed directly upon the chapter master of ceremonies. He was elected to that office for the express purpose of seeing that the officers go through their parts correctly and he should put forth his utmost effort in seeing that this work is handled properly.

Many of the chapters do not un-derstand the correct way to handle this work, for unless they have at-tended the national convention and witnessed the portrayal by teams competing against one another, they no doubt make many errors in their presentation. However, this

year the inspecting officers have been requested to assist this office in seeing that the degree teams of the different chapters understand the ritual. The officer who has supervision over your chapter understands the ritual and will be glad to make any explanation on his visit to your chapter. This of-fice will also be exceptionally pleased to answer any questions and make any explanations per-taining to our ritual, if you will but write me. Several of the brothers who live in the extreme South or West or away from the hot bed of Phi Delta Kappa, very seldom get the opportunity of see-ing outside degree teams at work. This year, at the Southern District Meeting at Jacksonville, this good chapter is initiating a candidate at the business meeting. This is something that should have been at the district meetings before, as our ritual, the foundation of our fraternity, has heretofore been treated too lightly.

Eighty years ago and many of the ideas put forth are true yet today. I personally have not seen another chapter’s initiation yet. I have been to many meetings in other chapters and seen their opening and closing ceremonies, but have never been lucky enough to be there for an initiation. I plan to remedy that in the coming months.

It is my understanding that there exist some problems around our fraternity pertaining to the proper way to exercise these rites. I am not sure as to why this is so, but I believe there have been lapses in leadership and the passage of knowledge from those who knew

Hello from Cracker CountryBy David Rieker

Hello again from cracker country. We had a ceremony to say farewell to P.N.P. Homer Wolf last month and now three weeks later his wife, Fran has passed away. These peo-ple were like close family and will be sorely missed. We will have a ceremony at our club house to say farewell to Fran also. God bless you, Fran Wolf.

Worthy causes are very much a part of who we are as Phi Delts and last Saturday, 13 members, 4 pledges, and one of our wives for a total of 18 of us showed up at the Good Samaritan Home in our area and spent the day pressure clean-ing, then painting, mowing, land-scaping and upgrading the whole building. And I know this is just

one of the many commitments our fraternity offers to worthy causes.

Well, word has gotten out about my efforts to make us all rich at Pentagon expense. So many have succeeded that I thought we would be passed by undetected. Not so! I’ve just heard from the DraftBoard. I thought this organization was no longer active. However, they are making an exception in my case. Well here I am almost 82 years old and Uncle Sam wants to draft me and train me to de-fuse road-side bombs and land-mines in a strongly held Al-Qaeda area of Afghanistan. I’ve heard the life expectancy for this work in that area is about 38 minutes.

So what does that tell you? The powers that be don’t like us futzing around on their gravy-train. Sooo I am planning to send them the report that was sent back to me from Sam’s Club after I applied for a “Discover Credit Card.” They re-ported back that I was turned down because I am deceased and Mary has been looking at me very strangely ever since. Besides, any-one with a drop of sense will tell you that if there’s a chance that you may encounter a road-side bomb, then the smart thing to do to avoid it is -- Drive in the middle of the road. DUUHH!! I’ll keep you posted. Phi Delts were the only qualified men to handle the deep thinking of the many sayings. One example is, “The best things in life are free.” We Phi Delts reasoned that the best things in life are truly free, then the money saved could easily buy all the bad thing we need! So, be well and full of he%$#. Cracker Boy signing off. Dave Rieker.

to those who were new. Older team members and national offi-cers bear the responsibility of teaching the new team members. Furthermore, constructive criticism and direction should be received in a positive way by the new mem-bers in order to preserve our ritu-als. I know that Brother Brutout has a passion for the sanctity of our rituals and I share that passion with him. We will be working on this.Until next time…

The new age of communication between chapter houses is upon us. It is up to all National Officers to strive to get the word out so that we plan and organize our efforts, to become a better organization. Gamma Theta Hog Roast in Dan-ville, IN is always the 3rd weekend in September. I did not know this and will miss this year Hog Roast, but believe me I will be there next year.

Yes, PNP Jon Handy, it’s time to get Frank out as in the Franklin Planner. Prioritizing is the key to success for us to make the most of our organization. Our new Na-tional President is very organized and will surely make a difference as every President of the PDK adds something unique. MS Alpha on 1 October is holding a PHI DELTA KAPPA Annual Golf Tournament. All proceeds will benefit Camp Eagle Ridge in MS. The mission at Camp Eagle Ridge is to lay the foundation for build-ing strong moral character.

MS ALPHA is planning an-other benefit for the Wounded Warriors and Patriots Day. Our National President Brother Craig Brutout supports these efforts and hopes to see every chapter house participate.

The 2011 Fall SEC meeting will be at MS ALPHA Oct 14-15, 2011. Sat Morning 09:30 meeting, Sat Night 6:30 Steak dinner and a live band for all to enjoy. The GPS address to MS ALPHA is 535 Tom Regan Road, Meridian MS 39304. Chapter house opens 3:00 PM on Friday. Call the chapter house at 601-484-9953 if you have any questions. Hug a brother and Proud to be a PHI DELTA KAPPA Greg Trombly.

Mister EdBy PNP Jon Handy, Beta Nu

Not many of you may remember “Mister Ed.” It was a TV series created by Walter Brooks that ran in the 1960s. The situation com-edy starred Mister Ed, the talking horse (voice by Allen Lane). Wilber Post, Ed’s caretaker, (played by Alan Young) was the only human that Ed allowed to know that he could speak. Wilber always had a hard time explaining his actions to his wife, Carol (played by Connie Hines), when he took the advice that Mister Ed offered him. Ed, the talking horse, delighted that generation with his dry sense of humor laced with irony. Wilber, dumbfounded by the fact that he was talking to a horse, would still, reluctantly, take Ed’s advice – which usually turned out to be right on target. Ed had a way of getting right to the crux of any dilemma and dis-playing an astounding under-standing of human nature. He would often overhear a conversa-tion by humans (horses were not supposed to understand humans) that would help in his advice to Wilber. This advice was always astute and usually flabbergasted those who could not know how Wilber, a not especially bright individual, could come up with such clever responses to the stum-bling stones they placed in Wilber’s path.

I had a Mister Ed giving me ad-vice as I went through the SEC chairs. He wasn’t a horse but a real live Past National President of Phi Delta Kappa, Ed Meadows.

Ed knew the dilemmas I would face having himself faced some of the same problems. I will ever be grate-ful for his insightful, fatherly advice. He knew the controversy I would be going through and offered his very best solution to the problem free of charge. He helped me over some of the highest stumbling stones I would ever have to jump. My lack of ex-perience did not slow me down con-siderably when I followed the path recommended by Ed.

I think the best advice I ever got from Ed came at a time that a vote was coming up at the next conven-tion. I had listened to the arguments from both sides and both sides made good sense when viewed from the perspective of that individual. I think Ed could see that I was being torn first this way, then that way.

Historical Horizon Looking “back to the future”

by Tom Frazier (Fl Alpha Lambda),

National Historical CommitteeThe following article is a reprint of a submission to the Phi Delta Kappa magazine, published May, 1970 by W i l l i a m E . ” B o b o ” L y n c h (Kokomo), National Outer Guard.

“It is yours!Your fraternity was created just 68 years ago in Marion Indiana in June of 1902, just two years after the dawn of this fantastic century. Chal-lenged by this new era, for many decades we have kept pace under the leadership of many fine and worthy brothers.

From its very start, our fraternity has stood first in the ranks of American fraternalism . We must recognize a

debt to these men for their leader-ship. No one who believes in this fraternity can fail to appreciate this leadership and the work of these men, with whom, I am proud to say, I have been honored to serve. On the solid foundation which was built in those early years, we are again moving ahead, while never relinquishing our place in the standing of brotherhood. From pe-riods of digression unto today, we are a modern fraternity on the move.

Together, all of us, should have one over-riding aspiration for this fraternity. We must be sure that in the modern age, ours is a modern fraternity. A modern fraternity that can set the pace for the future. We must be determined that in these years of change and progress the fraternity is on the move to-wards new members and new chapters--achievements that will double and redouble any past re-cords. The fraternity must be on the move toward these ends; achievements that will bring about more strongly, the perpetuation of this fraternity.

We want many to be able to en-joy the benefits and worthwhile endeavors of our fraternity. We want every member, now, to seal the security of having our frater-nity around for some time to come.We cannot move forward, how-ever, if we permit ourselves to be anchored to the past in this era of change. That is what we want in this modern fraternity, on the move, brothers to keep the wheels rolling.

A challenge from 41 years ago! How have we done? Where do we want to go? Stay tuned for more historical newsworthy items and prophetical words of wisdom from the annals of our national magazine.

Like me or loathe meBy Jerry Johnson

First I would like to thank the brothers of Gamma Lambda for an outstanding convention, as well as their genuine hospitality. I have stated many times before, until you travel, you really miss out on the real brotherhood of PDK. A lot of things were discussed and cleared up for the future and the better hopefully. Looking forward to next years convention. That being said, this being our only outlet for now to discuss things, something's that were said to me at convention were out of line and inappropriate for a MENS FRATERNITY. To be accosted by the wife of a prominent member and be questioned as to why I was there, and what my motives were, was wrong. To be told by her that I need to read MY constitution be-cause she knows is wrong on many levels. While I understand that have worked hard for many years for PDK, this is still a men's frater-nity and our business is our busi-ness. Think about it.

Everything I have written has been read before my chapter be-fore being sent. To have been chastised and slandered by a widow of PDK on the floor and her chapter to not even know it existed, was also wrong on many levels. By the double standard ex-hibited by certain members of the SEC, it shows even more the need for transparency. While she may felt justified, it should have gone through proper channels to be pre-sented. Like the title says, Like me or loathe me, I am a Phi Delt, and I will continue to fight for open dealings with the members of this fraternity.

By saying this , after all is said and done, I feel Jon Handy's choice for Emir to myself and others is what an Emir means to US. Ed Mead-ows more than earned it! See ya in Mississippi.
