Industrial Builders out of Fargo, North Dakota brought their rotomiller to begin the initial phase of road construction

on Skylark Road. One would think this to be an outrageously loud process. Surprisingly, it’s not. Driving by with

windows down, one could still hear the radio. Last year Industrial Builders milled over two million tons of asphalt

explained, and it will orm an approximately two-inchcrust.  As a road stabilizer, magnesium chloride bindsgravel and clay particles to keep them rom leaving theroad. Te water-absorbing characteristics o magnesiumchloride prevents the road rom drying out, which keeps

gravel on the ground.“It will almost be like pavement when all said and

done,” odd added.  Slippery when wet? One o the drawbacks o usingmag choride is that the road can tend to get a little on thesnotty side i it’s raining, he says, and wants motorists tobe aware o that act.

By next spring he expects it to be a little roughagain with winter travel and spring precipitation, butthey’ll reblade and apply another good coating o magchloride, a.k.a. “dust buster”.

Cost to pave Skylark Road would have a price tag inthe neighborhood o $700,000; this method is going torun around $50,000 and annual maintenance o around$7,000.  “Everybody would have loved to have it paved, mysel included,” odd said, “but the county just doesn’thave the money. I the Keystone Pipeline ever comesthrough, this road will be damn-near pave ready.”  Valley County Commissioner Paul weten arrivedon the scene at around 3:30 p.m. Monday afernoon andwas very impressed with the way the milling machine

was grinding into the road bed six inches deep — ouro those being the old pavement.  “I expected it to be a lot clumpier,” Commissionerweten said as he inspected the work being done byIndustrial Builders.  “Shucks, odd, we won’t even have to gravel it!” he joked.  “Yeah, that should be a big money saver right there,”odd ribbed back at Paul.

But in seriousness, once the packing is done it willbe laid with our inches o good gravel and then sprayed

with the “dust buster”.  “I think when it’s done people will be okay with it,”Commissioner weten said.

For now the Skylark Road remains open to trafficand they hope to keep it that way. All they ask or is thatpeople use it only as necessary as it is a highly traveledroad.  “Hopeully we can keep it open to those who needto use this road on a regular basis,” odd emphasized.  So please be kind to the residents on Skylark Roadand avoid using it until the project is complete.

Fern Vosen, mother of Sheila Vosen-Shorten, thoroughly enjoys the pitter-patter of

tiny paws massaging her legs as she plays with ve abandoned kittens and their

mother. These kittens need to be socialized to human touch and voice before they

can be adopted as pets. During Fern’s visit in Glasgow, she has helped the kittensbecome less afraid of human touch and they are now crawling all over her, untying

her shoes and wrestling with each other as they tumble over her legs.

The Valley County Cat Resource Project (VCCRP) is currently caring for 44 cats. All

of these cats have been spayed or neutered, and this group of six will be spayed/

neutered and vaccinated very soon. Sheila, VCCRP Director and founder, will nd or

tailor-make jobs for anyone feeling the urge to volunteer their time and talent in the

sanctuary. Volunteers who are willing to foster and work with cats, especially towards

making them more adoptable, are always welcome. If you would like to volunteer
