CELEBRATE RECOVERY "Celebrate recovery is a biblical and balanced program that helps us overcome our hurts, hang-ups, and habits. Based on the actual words of Jesus rather than psychological theory, this recovery program is extremely effective in helping people change their lives thru the power of the Holy Spirit. The principles of recovery were given by Christ in the sermon on the mountain. These principles, as found in the beatitudes, support the 12 steps of recovery. To provide information and also the opportunity to ask questions there will be meetings held in the Carroll room on: Saturday, Oct. 24 following the 4PM Mass and Sunday, Oct. 25 following the 8:30 and 11AM Masses. The goal is to bring CR to Saint Mary's as soon as possible. For more information contact either Jackie Tomassi at 501-282-3427 or Pietro Tomassi at 501-282-4427"

GOD’S WORK OF SALVATION God’s work of salvation is the focus of this weekend’s readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah to Jesus’ understanding of the human condition in Hebrews, concluding with Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is in control. There may be failings and misunderstandings along the way. We may move away from God, but at our conversion, God leads us back. Like James and John, we may let greed and power blur our vision of what Jesus wants us to know about the Kingdom; but tirelessly we are taught and re-taught what life in the Kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to ensure that we will share in the Kingdom. It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a punishment that he endured. However, it is more accurate, and more like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom as God’s gift to us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Irish are rightly tired of being the subject of jokes about guilt. In fact, it is from the Celtic church that the whole experience of reconciliation in our tradition was creatively rescued and revived. The Irish church was unique in its origins, not so much organized around dioceses, but around monasteries. Aspects of religious community life readily spilled over into ordinary gatherings of the faithful, including the way people looked at sin and applied remedies. Unlike the public nature of canonical penance, the Irish method was linked to a kind of mentoring process they called “soul friending.” Just as young novice monks might find a mentor in the wisdom of a senior guide, so did a way of penance open up to ordinary folks. Monks were accustomed to frequent confession of faults to the abbot or mentor, who would suggest penances. In time, abbots with a certain flair for this began to share lists of sins and corresponding “tariffs” with others. Some of these books survive, and provide a hair‑raising view of long‑ago sins like cattle rustling, and a great deal of self‑correction involving dips in icy streams and rolling about in thickets of thorns. After the penance was performed, the penitent returned to the confessor, and in a private act marked by the laying on of hands, or perhaps a kiss of the altar, the sinner was restored. Irish monks were committed travelers, and their methods were widely copied. We might say that they saved a sacrament, but at the expense of shifting attention to the sins of the individual and away from the actions of the reconciling community. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The text of this weekend’s Isaiah reading speaks of a servant whose suffering and afflictions are borne for the many. Father Daniel Berrigan once said that the call of the disciple of Jesus is to absorb evil. Not very glorious, indeed, for servants absorb the leftovers of the household’s extravagance. Those at the bottom of life’s pyramid absorb the muck; swamps and lowlands absorb the runoff of life’s fields. Just so parents absorb our tears. And those who forgive absorb the blow. As the warrior absorbs the enemy’s hate, so the conscientious objector absorbs the need for revenge. So also the embrace absorbs our fears, justice absorbs mistrust, love absorbs the distance of hearts, and the sharing of bread absorbs the memory of pain. In such ways God makes the world new. The fear, and perhaps the sadness as well, is that in absorbing the evil of life we do become at least to some extent that which we absorb. Then those who gaze upon us do so as if we ourselves were afflicted and diseased. Then those who minister to dying AIDS patients are themselves eyed with suspicion and fear. Then the conscientious objector is expelled by the patriot, and the selfless warrior is cast off into indifference by the righteous purist. Then the Alzheimer caregiver is forgotten; the one who forgives the abuse is revenged; and the one who combats poverty with generosity grows poorer while the hoarder is glorified. And, contradiction of contradictions, the crucified Christ becomes the Christ who reigns. And so we become like him. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. LIVING GOD’S WORD Isaiah's servant sounds like the wise and wrinkled old one whose selfless devotion helped make his marriage work, one who knowingly and willingly bore the guilt of others. This is also our image of Jesus. Is our image of ourselves like it?

With so much technology at our fingertips, it's tough not to get swept away in all the noise and clutter. In our society there's often a tendency to live passively by simply "going with the flow." In this talk given at a FOCUS national conference, Fr. Mike Schmitz explains how we need to live an intentionally Christian life within a technological age.

OCTOBER - THE MONTH OF MARY In celebration of the Month of the Rosary (October), St. Mary's will begin the Pilgrim Virgin Family Rosary program. We are asking parishioners to sign up to take the Pilgrim Virgin in to your home for a week with a commitment to say the Rosary daily or at least one decade a day. We have two complete sets of materials, so we are asking one family a week to sign-up. On your assigned weekend, you will bring up the Gifts and Father will hand you the case and give you a blessing. Return the case to the front of the alter on the next weekend. The case will contain all the materials you need to have a successful week with Mary and the Rosary. Sign-ups will be in the back of the church or you can contact Stephaine Nehus at [email protected] for more information.
