Welcome to the Rafter School Vienna Feis!

We are delighted to welcome dancers from all regions and all organisations to the 2017 Vienna Feis run by Rafter School of Irish Dancing Vienna. This year’s feis marks the fifth time that it is organised by Rafter School (after 2005, 2011, 2014 and 2015). Please note that this year, we are back to the location of 2015 – Stadthalle B. The hall has stands for the audience, there are numerous changing rooms in the basement and the adjacent Hall A is available for warmup/practice and results. The Feis will be run with three adjudicators for two floors and a stage (10x8m). A local caterer in the lobby of the hall will provide you with snacks and refreshments, and there are restaurants and shops in the nearby “Lugner City” shopping mall. In the hall, we will have a stall for shoes and dance supplies (Irishdancer). Stay tuned for more information via Facebook and our website www.viennafeis.at ! As we commemorate the publication of the first Harry Potter novel 20 years ago, the theme of our treble reel will be Harry Potter – so all the Gryffindors and Slytherins, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, and all other characters from the books and movies will be very welcome! There will be trophies for all winners and medals for runners-up, and like on previous Vienna Feis occasions, Open Championship dancers from Austrian schools will again have an opportunity to compete for the title of an “Austrian National Champion” if the Austrian National Championship option is added to their registration (please refer to the Feis Rules). Please note that registration will be through the Feis.Info system this year (more information overleaf)! We’ll also have a raffle with tickets for € 2.50 each – there will be a prize for every ticket, with main prizes to be announced on the day. Joan and Lucia Rafter, Simon Zirkowitsch, Ellie Frank-Grossebner and the Feis Committee members wish all dancers the best of success and a great time in Vienna, the city of music and dancing!

Rialacha NaFeis - Feis Rules 1. The Feis will run in accordance with the Rules of An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha. 2. Entries will be accepted from persons currently registered with An Coimisiún. All competitions are OPEN to dancers from ALL REGIONS. The Feis is also open to registered Ceili Clubs. 3. The lodgement of an entry will be taken to mean that teachers and pupils understand these rules and undertake to abide by them. 4. Objections must be lodged in writing within one hour of the announcement of the result of a competition accompanied by a fee of 40 Euro, which will be refunded if the objection is upheld. 5. Age will be taken as on 1st January 2017. Whatever age a dancer turns this year, in 2017, s/he will dance under that age all year long, e.g. if a dancer’s date of birth is 29 May 2005, he/she dances under 12 in the year 2017). Evidence of age may be requested, therefore dancers from Mainland Europe should have a valid ID with them in the event of a query as to their age. 6. The Adjudicators’ decisions are final. 7. Beginners Grade competitions are confined to dancers who have never won 1st or 2nd prize (also 3rd prize, please refer to rule 9) in any competition for that particular dance. In Beginners Grade competitions only basic steps may be performed. 8. Primary Grade competitions are confined to dancers who have never won 1st prize (or 2nd prize, please refer to rule 10) for that particular dance other than in Beginners Grade. 9. If a Beginner competition has 6 or more dancers, the first two places advance to the next grade, regardless of ties. If a Beginner competition has 11 dancers or more, then the first 3 places advance to the next grade regardless of ties. (RTME ruling Sept. 2007). 10. If a Primary competition has 6 or more dancers, the first place advances to the next grade. If a Primary competition has 11 or more, the first and second places advance to the next grade, regardless of ties (RTME ruling June 2011). 11. Where there are five dancers or less for Beginners, Primary and Intermediate competitions, the results will not affect their grading. 12. Intermediate Grade competitions are open to all dancers who have not previously won first prize for that particular dance in Intermediate or Open Grades under the same or higher age limits. If a dancer in Mainland Europe wins in Intermediate, they must advance into Open for the rest of the calendar year. If they do not win in Open, they may return to Intermediate at the start of the next calendar year. (RTME ruling Sept. 2007). 13. For all Beginner, Primary and Intermediate competitions (excluding trophy competitions) the 32 bar method will be applied. However, the number of bars to be danced may be lowered if this seems indicated to the organisers. All Open Championship dancers will be required to dance 48 bars of music in the reel and jig and 40 bars in the slip-jig and hornpipe. Two and three hands are danced to 40 bars of music. Ceíli and figure dances are subject to the rules applied at Oireachtasi.

Page 5: October 14th and 15th, 2017 - Rafter School Vienna Feis 2021

14. Adult Preliminary Championships are open to Intermediate/Open level dancers who have never won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in Open Championship level and to dancers not participating in a full Open Championship at the same feis. Dancers will be required to dance 32 bars of music in the reel (gents, ladies) or slip-jig (ladies) in the light round, heavy jig or hornpipe in the heavy round, and a Traditional Set. If there are more than 9 dancers in any competition, it will go to recall. Please note that these championships have been created for dancers who started Irish Dancing as ADULTS. 15. Beginners Trophy Competitions will be a choice of any light dance. Primary/Intermediate Trophy Competitions will be a choice of heavy dance. Dancers will dance 16 bars down the line in their chosen dance. They may only be entered in dances which they have not previously placed out of. 16. Open Championships will be judged as two solos and an overall Championship. If there are more than 9 dancers in any competition, it will go to recall. The Open Championships include the Austrian National Championships which are specifically for dancers from Irish dance schools based in Austria and registered with CLRG in the current year (2017/18). National Championship results will be based on the Open Championship results, i.e. the best placed dancer from an Austria-based school will be this year’s Austrian Champion is his/her age group. 17. Traditional set dances can only be performed in the Traditional Set competitions, in the Adult Championship and in the Under 10 Open Championships. 18. Music will be played at the recognized An Coimisiún speeds of Mainland Europe.

An Coimisiún has ruled that from 1st January each year, that no block, en pointe, stationary or moving, be allowed to be performed for all ages up to and including the under 12 age group worldwide. The Under 12 Age Group will be allowed to toe walk from September 1st. 32. By entering in competitions, dancers (or their legal representatives, in case of minors) consent to their names being stated in the feis results and in the public Internet archives of any feis entry/results system as may be used. 33.
