’’I love fall. I love the cooler weather. I love the pumpkins all over the front yard of the church. I love layered clothes and boots and beautiful changing leaves. I love fireplaces, and hot apple cider and hot cocoa and extra furry donkeys. It sort of reminds me of my favorite yoga pose, called Savasana. After all the hard work of stretching and balancing and sweating, we get to the end of our practice and we lay flat on our backs, trying to relax each part of our body. We even open our mouth and relax our jaw and tongue (we all know my jaw and tongue get plenty of exercise, so it needs lots of resting), then relax our eyebrow and forehead. In our class, our yoga instructor comes by and with a citrus scented essential oil massages our foreheads, temples and shoulders for about 15 to 20 seconds. It’s heavenly after the hard work, and the essential oil stays with me. I catch a whiff of the scent randomly throughout the day and it reminds me of my practice and the time I spent taking care

of my body, which does such a good job of taking care of me.

For me, fall seems like the savasana of the seasons. Our senses are invited to pay attention to all the blessings surrounding us, and to kind of breath into that and be grateful. And with all the pumpkin spice EVERYTHING, we can’t help but occasionally catch a whiff randomly of that scent which reminds us what time it is.

If you enjoy this season also, I invite you to participate in a few restful and easy-going mission opportunities which get you out and into the beauty of this fall season. The fall festival is this coming Sunday, October 14th. We need First Chrch members to host and hostess this event, and just mingle with our guests. We need people to bring chili and a side dish or dessert. We need folks to take a turn monitoring the bouncy house or the animal pens or help tidy up or sell pumpkins. Which brings me to our pumpkin patch…we have shifts everyday where we need people to sit and sell pumpkins. I recently spoke to a friend

and she said it’s her favorite volunteer opportunity…she gets to sit for a couple hours and it still counts as volunteering. She’s smart.

We have trunk or treat on Halloween night. Last year we had so much fun seeing all the kids in their costumes, all the creatively decorated trunks. The participants laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. We hope this year we will fill the parking lot with trunks and candy and kids and fun, and we really hope you’ll come play with us.

All Saints Day is coming, and you’ll have another opportunity to enjoy the lovely weather and outdoors. Once again people are invited to purchase daffodil bulbs, place them in a paper bag in the refrigerator and on Saturday, November 3rd, join others for a hike and a time of planting bulbs to honor saints who have gone on to be with the Lord.

It’s a season with plenty to do, but it just doesn’t seem as fast paced and busy and tiring. I hope you’re enjoying your Savasana Fall, and I’ll see you at some of these fun fall events. Until then….My Soul honors Your Soul.

LAITY CORNERIn 2000, Bartlesville First Church purchased a new Ford Mini-van. Soon thereafter, Associate Pastor Margaret Friend asked a few members of First Church to join her after the 11:00 AM service for a short meeting. Rev. Friend had an idea. She knew several members of the church who rarely or no longer drove and some who had a hard time walking from where they had to park to the building for services. She thought we could use the new van to pick up these members, drop them at the door and take them home after Sunday services.

AMAZON SMILEAmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon. The difference is that the AmazonSmile Foundation donates 0.5% of the purchase price to an eligible organization of your choice. Simply go to smile.amazon.com and choose Bartlesville First Church as your charitable organization.

Of the original drivers who participated in the ministry, only Wayne Middleton continues today. Fortunately, other volunteers have taken their place. The ministry needs more volunteers if it is to continue. If you would be willing to work in this vital ministry, call the church office or send an e-mail to Wayne Middleton: [email protected].

Thus was born our Sunday morning van ministry. The van runs every Sunday morning, weather permitting and for occasional special events. None of the original riders are alive today. But, others have taken their place. Over the years, the ministry has also served children and youth.

Regular riders Ann Boerstler, Arlene McClain and Cora Briggs are joined by drivers Grace and Scott Farmer.
