TissueCon is a product of the hard work of many TAPPI volunteers and committee members. Their tireless efforts and dedication to the industry are what ensure the depth of quality and the breadth of information attendees receive each year. To each and every member, TAPPI offers its deepest gratitude.

Dave is a Director in Georgia-Pacific’s Consumer Products Division, a leading

supplier of bath tissue, toweling and napkins to the Retail and Away-from-Home Marketplace in North America. With considerable experience in Research and Development, Quality Control and Project Management, Dave has worked extensively with customers, Marketing, Sales, and Facilities on the introduction and implementation of new product launches as well as equipment selection, design and execution within manufacturing. With a keen eye toward innovation in manufacturing, Dave has kept abreast of new technologies that contribute significantly to the bottom line in all areas of production ranging from the woodyards,

pulp mills, bleaching, paper machines, and converting to warehousing. Further, Dave has been called upon to help troubleshoot and permanently resolve quality control issues by understanding root causes and implementing long-term process solutions. Dave is the TAPPI Tissue Division Co-Chair for 2018 – 2019 and represents North American Manufacturers to help promote safety awareness and improvements in tissue manufacturing.

Jeff has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.

He started his career with Hercules and spent 23 years in a variety of positions: field sales, started the Hercules Tissue Applications group, managed the Americas tissue business and was Global Tissue Marketing and Business Development Manager. Jeff has published several tissue-related papers and has a patent related to developing strength in tissue. He left the

paper industry for a few years to test his entrepreneurial spirit and decided to come back to the industry in 2009 with BTG to start up their tissue applications group. Jeff is an experienced instructor for TAPPI’s Tissue 101 course and co-chairs the TAPPI Tissue 201 course.

▶ TissueCon is Developed for and By the IndustryTissueCon 2019 represents the only non-commercial, peer-reviewed event of its kind occurring in North America this year. The comprehensive program offers timely business insights while highlighting the latest in product innovation at the New Technology Showcase, and also delves into the critical areas of improving O&M performance and safety.

Together, TAPPI and Fastmarkets RISI provide a unique combination of specialized technical information, formative data, and critical analyses. The Conference addresses Yankee Dryer operations, tissue chemistry and Operations and maintenance (O&M) issues, data and the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) in Tissue manufacturing, policy and economics and discussions on creating softness.

▶ TAPPI Adheres to a Tight Antitrust PolicyUnlike many other conferences, presenters at TAPPI/Fastmarkets RISI’s TissueCon must have their presentation reviewed to ensure talks are in line with TAPPI’s antitrust and commercialism policies. Attendees at industry events in the U.S. are becoming increasingly sensitive to antitrust compliance at face-to-face meetings. These policies protect the presenter, the industry, and TAPPI. Therefore, we remind all authors to follow these guidelines in your presentation slides.

▶ It Takes a VillageOf subject matter experts to put on one of the industry’s leading educational and technical conferences. Which is why we thank these Tissue leaders for their outstanding efforts in putting together the extensive, comprehensive program offered this year.

Thank you to our committee volunteer members!

Keynote address: Building a Company Culture for SuccessCheng Lim – Georgia Pacific/Koch Industries Cheng Lim, Vice President of Market-Based Management (MBM), LLC, an internal consulting organization serving all the Koch Industries businesses, including Georgia-Pacific, will deliver the keynote at TissueCon 2019. Lim has the rare gift of taking a complex or intimidating topic and explaining it in such a way to make it understandable, memorable and practical, immediately ready to put into action. This is largely the result of his love of ideas, language, and most of all – people. For many years, his wisdom, insights and humor have made him a highly sought-after speaker, consultant and executive coach.

Meet some of this year’s speakers:

Esko Uutela, Principal Economist of Tissue for FastMarkets RISIWith more than 30 years’ experience in the global paper market, Esko’s expertise lies in the tissue and recovered fiber markets. After working nearly 18 years for a large forest industry consulting company in Helsinki and Munich, Esko established EU Consulting, his own forest industry consulting company. Esko carries out numerous private client projects, as well as publishing RISI’s comprehensive studies on tissue business developments and global recycled fiber markets worldwide.

Lasse Sinikallas, Director of Macroeconomics for Fastmarkets RISILasse joined Fastmarkets RISI in August 2017 from a foreign affairs post which he held for the past decade. Lasse’s early career background was in forest products and he also worked in management consulting for Pöyry, IBM and Accenture. He has real-world insight into geopolitical economic analysis, international trade issues, country risk analysis, and the legal and regulatory environment, along with the forest products industry. Lasse holds Master’s degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Economics.

Juan Corzo Jr., Vice President of South Florida Tissue Paper Co.Juan Corzo is the third generation to join the tissue and paper towel industry. He has been involved in tissue and towel converting since 2008. His tissue family history begins with his grandfather in 1960 forming his own paper converting plant in Guatemala. When Corzo’s father was 30 years old, he took over the family business and expanded the operation to Miami, FL in 1997. Following tradition, Juan worked afternoons and summers at the converting

operations until he joined fulltime as VP, continuing to grow the family business. Impressively, from 2014 – 2019 he implemented different strategies and projects in both the sales and marketing departments that allowed for 180% growth in expanding the Miami operation.

Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez, Faculty of Integrated Conversion Economics & Supply Chain, and Co-Director of the Tissue Pack Innovation Lab at North Carolina State UniversityDr. Gonzalez has more than 16 years of progressive industry experience in different corporate business roles with Smurfit Kappa and the Swedish Group Essity. Dr. Gonzalez has developed an integrated research portfolio at the intersection of science, engineering, and business with a focus on the pulp and paper and hygiene tissue industry.

His research focuses on profiling the potential profitability, sustainability and risks of new technologies and materials at the early stage. He is also a consultant to the U.S. Department of Commerce and companies in the pulp and paper sector and tissue industry.
