In the wide world of medical studies, the idea of “Continuity of Care” is a low priority judging by the amount of research done on the subject. As one study puts it, “continuity of care is generally assumed to be a ‘good thing’ for clients”. So why spend resources studying something that borders on being totally obvious? Why do I spend time reading it? For one thing, research has uncovered that continuity of care is more critical for the following types of clients: the elderly; end-stage palliative care clients; those with significant physical, mental health or cognitive disabilities; those with complex medical regimens; and clients with significantly stressed caregivers. (Hmm… that’s about 99% of our Nurse Next Door clientele – my interest is piqued.) Plus, studies brought us the enlightening conclusion that an individual receiving medical care or service has a very different opinion of what continuity of care means compared to those providing care. Jackpot. What a client wants is to see the same care provider every time. What the medical community at large describes as continuity of care is system related: standards in processes, care planning, knowledge and skill, and ongoing accurate observation. Narrowing the focus to my Nurse Next Door realm, I can proudly report that we’ve approached the concept of “Continuity of Care” from the client lens first – that is keeping the same caregiver or team of caregivers with a client – all while maintaining consistent standards to keep ourselves in line with our facility and hospital cohorts. In other words, at Nurse Next Door we can do exactly what our clients want. Because at the end of the day, it’s about caring, not just healthcare™.
