Hello Hawk Families, If you haven’t registered yet for the Home Access Center in order to see your child’s first quarter grade report, be sure to go to the W.D. Hartley website, look beneath the “Fairness” video under “a few helpful links”, and click on the “Home Access Center” link to register. If you still need assistance or have forgotten your password or user ID, call Robin Kelley at 547-‐8384 for support. If you need to request a printed copy of your child’s report card, you may also contact Mrs. Kelley who will send home the printed copy with your child. I urge you to use this service to regularly check on your child’s progress throughout the year and to request a conference with his/her teacher if you have questions or concerns. Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, be sure to look for your child’s FSA score reports to come home by Friday. We will be copying, sorting and stuffing envelopes with the reports this week, so be sure to keep an eye out for the white envelope with your child’s name on it in his/her backpack or folder. These reports will not indicate a pass or fail designation or level but will give you an idea of how your child performed in relation to other students throughout the state. We can’t wait for our fun-‐filled Trunk or Treat Spirit Night coming up this Thursday night, October 29th, from 5PM through 7:00PM. As always, overflow parking will be available at Shores United Methodist Church with an easy shortcut through their back parking lot right into the field where our Trunk or Treat activity will be featured, so I urge you to take advantage of that option to help us keep our cars out of the neighborhood as much as possible. We are still in need of bagged candy for this event, so if you’re able to contribute a bag, please send it in with your child by Thursday. We are also in need of gift cards, certificates and/or gift baskets for our Silent Auction on that night, so if you have a business or a connection to one and can provide a donation, we appreciate it.

SCIENCE LAB Your youngster can inflate a balloon without using his breath. A chemical reaction will do the job for him! You’ll need: empty plastic soda bottle (20 fl. Oz.) ¼ cup water, 1 tsp. baking soda, uninflated balloon, lemon juice Here’s how: Have your child add the water and baking soda to the bottle, close the cap, and swirl it around until the water is cloudy. Then, help him stretch out the balloon and place the opening over the top of the bottle, leaving a small space. He should very quickly add a little lemon juice, seal the balloon completely over the bottle, and shake lightly. What happens? The balloon inflates. Why? When you mix an acid (lemon juice) with a base (baking soda), they create carbon dioxide. The molecules spread out as the gas forms, pushing against the walls of the balloon and causing it to inflate.

CALLING ALL PARENTS: JOIN THE LICE SQUAD!! School is back in session!! As children return to school after vacation activities such as trips to other areas, slumber parties, etc., the occurrence of head lice is usually increased. Head lice are very contagious. They are spread through the sharing of personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, scarves, sleeping bags, and even stuffed animals. Major outbreaks can be avoided if each parent will check his or her child now and on a regular basis throughout the year. Although lice are small and difficult to see with the naked eye, the eggs (nits) are fairly visible, especially at the back of the head behind the ears. They appear as small grayish-‐white bodies attached to individual hairs and can be mistaken for dandruff. Itching and scalp irritation are symptoms of an active case. If you suspect your child has head lice, please consult your family physician or pharmacist for treatment recommendations. Positive cases should be reported to the school so that other parents may be notified and further infestations do not occur. You are urged to check your child now and at least several times monthly thereafter.
Let’s keep lice out of our schools!

KIDS’ CLOSET is coming soon!
For those new to Hartley, this is a clothing sale event that will be held on Thursday, November 5th in the Hartley cafeteria. We collect gently used clothing for children and adults of all sizes – newborn to adults. These clothes will be on sale in the cafeteria at Hartley Elementary School on the evening of Nov. 5 th f rom 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Each piece of clothing costs a quarter. The proceeds will go to the Hartley Media Center to buy new books, and a portion will go towards our holiday giving program. The purpose of this event is to teach our students the importance of recycling and reusing our resources, and the importance of community service which will help our families in need and to support our Media Center because of shrinking school budgets. The public is invited to attend this event and support this worthwhile service project. I also need volunteers to help sort clothing before the sale. If you are a volunteer with some extra time, please see Ms. Garbini, the school counselor, or just ask Mrs. Hagan where to go to help with the sorting process.
It would be great if parents would like to help by putting a box at their work place and collect used clothing for us. All clothes must be clean and in good condition. We will start accepting donations Sept. 25th. Just bring clothes to the stage area in the cafeteria for sorting. Brigid Garbini, School Counselor Hartley Elementary 904-547-8387
