It's time to address the elephant in the room.  Country music.  It seems to me that you either love it or hate it.  I would not consider myself a country fan but I can't deny some of it I like.  Obviously there are different sub-genres to country as there are in rock and polka.  Maybe if we knew more about what country music is and where it came from it will help.

The Birth Place of Country Music is Bristol, Tennessee based on recordings done at a studio in Bristol in 1927.  Evidently some guy named Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family made their commercial debuts at that time.  I don't know these people but I bet someone played a fiddle.  I feel that this does not give us any insight, although good for trivia, so let's move on.

From what I understand, it all started with hillbilly music.  In the 30’s, as radio became more popular, barn dance music featuring country tunes were played all over the south.  In the forties, Western movies popularized "Cowboy songs" or "Western songs".  Things really took off during the fifties and sixties with bluegrass, honky tonk and rockabilly. Gospel music also played a big role, and as the 60's came to a close, country rock emerged.  In the 70's and 80’s, other genres blended with this music to create country pop, outlaw country and John Denver.  Garth Brooks made country music a worldwide phenomenon.  Today's popular country music would probably be characterized as country pop with the success of Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum.   This is all very interesting but it does not explain why some hate and some love this genre.

Basically, I think you like what you like.  It doesn't matter if it's rock, funk or country.  If you like it, you like it.  I remember falling in love with a number of country songs over the years.  I bought a Randy Travis album once because I fell in love with the song "Forever and Ever Amen". Still love it.  But I doubt I'll ever buy a Kenny Chesney album. Country music is great for the story-telling.  I played a country record backwards once.  The woman came back, the dog lived and the pickup started.

I do admire the loyalty these country people show for their music, though.  I grew up in Calgary and on occasion would go to a country bar.  Everyone was dressed country.  You just have to admire a person who can wear a cowboy hat 24/7.

BLIND PIGEON

You might have heard of the Beatles. Well, George Harrison was the youngest, their lead guitar player and sometimes vocalist. They were all born in Liverpool, England during the early 1940’s while the war was still on. He, John, Paul and eventually Ringo, formed what would become the most successful rock group ever. The Beatles eventually broke up in 1970 and each led a solo career afterwards. All this, most Beatle fans already know about, I’m sure.

In 2011, a Martin Scorsese directed documentary of George’s life titled, “Living in the Material World” was released. It documents his early life, the Beatles rise to fame, their evolution and break-up, his solo career and what else went on in his life until his passing in 2001. Much like The Beatles Anthology film, this documentary rolls in chronological order the events of George’s life. There seems a slight similarity of the two (even sharing a few same clips) but Scorsese’s film is obviously more specific and centred on George. In it, we also learn of George’s influences, his family and the events and people that shaped his life. Astrid Kirchher, Klaus Voormann, Ravi Shankar, Eric Clapton, wives Patti & Olivia, son Dhani, the Monty Python troupe are just to name a few. Also his interest in eastern music and philosophies and his grand undertaking of the Concert for Bangladesh (1971) are well covered.

George, for the most part, lived in the shadow of Lennon and McCartney during his Beatles years but eventually started producing songs on their level as can be witnessed with “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun” from the Beatles LP Abbey Road. I really feel that the lads had another five great years together  left in them but that is not the way it turned out of course. Their early solo careers can attest to this though. Like his fellow Beatle John Lennon, George took long breaks from the spotlight and record-making to make time for family, gardening and other interests including film. He seemed to be the least impressed with the mania that went with life as a Beatle.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World is currently playing on Netflix Canada or also available on DVD or Blu-ray disc. It’s three and a half hours of pure George.

FP FOOD FOR THOUGHT A word uttered from a pure heart never goes in vain.

Selfishness keeps us worrying forever. An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.

I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is an attribute of the strong.
