An RV that has 30 amp service can easily use more than 30 amps and overload both your RV, RV converter and the breaker on your campsite. Let’s walk through a scenario…… You’ve pulled onto the campsite and plugged in your RV. You’ve turned on the refrigerator, the A/C, you’ve flipped the switch to the hot water heater (STOP. LP hot water heaters only) and you’re ready to relax until it all goes dark…oh no!, the breaker tripped. Let’s learn why: When you set up the camper, the appliances that were on were all working really hard. The refrigerator was warmer and needed to cool down, the water in the heater was cold

and needed to pull a lot of electrical power to heat up (which is why we only allow LP hot water heaters), the air in the camper was hot and the A/C needed to work harder to cool down the unit. In the above scenario, you’re now using the following: A/C: 15.5 amps | Refrigerator: 7.3 amps Water Heater: 11.4 amps | Converter: 6.8 amps The total amperage you’re using has now exceeded the capabilities of the service you have within your RV, let alone the breaker on the campsite. Don’t feel alone, there are millions of folks that have the same experience as you every day. Here’s the easy solution: Run your water heater on LP only, not electric. If the water heater was not included in the above scenario, your total amp draw would be 29.6 which is nearly maxed out, but is an acceptable level for a 30 amp RV. If you’d like to know more about RV electrical service and view a very comprehensive list of camping appliances and the amps they draw, download our app by searching “HTP Resort” in your device’s app store and click on the “RV Electrical Service & Amp Usage” menu.
