The Residents of Sea View Manor were treated to a Christmas visit from the Barwon Heads Chorale last week. The group performed a number of festive songs for their appreciative audience. The male and female choir is about 40 strong with many hailing from Ocean Grove. They rehearse every Tuesday from 7.30pm in the Anglican Church, Barwon Heads. New members welcome.

BIG crowds greeted Ocean Grove’s traditional Christmas Eve Santa Run. The run takes in a dozen stops around the town, with Santa and his team of helpers being mobbed by excited younsters at most locations. This year the Voice caught them at the Blue Waters and Ocean Grove Park stops. Mark and Xavier Schorback with Santa.

Happy huggers

‘Mighty kind of you’

A GROUP of youths has helped to spread the love around Ocean Grove by giving out more than 500 free hugs on The Terrace.

Locals out enjoying the sun were given an extra treat with nine teens offering hugs, hand- shakes, high fives and lollipops as they passed by.

The group was part of the Bellarine Youth Action Crew (BYAC) who used the free hug day to break the stereotype that young people don’t care about others and to connect with the community in what can sometimes be a lonely time for some.

Some locals were

obviously not in the hugging mood on the day, crossing the road or refusing a hug, but the majority of people passing by greeted the gesture with enthusiasm with some even returning for a second or third hug.

One local recipient, Kara Penny, crossed the road just to receive several hugs from the group.

“It’s a wonderful thing to do, what a lovely gesture,” Kara said. “I’ve got grandkids that age so I’m not intimidated by them offering hugs at all.”

One of BYAC huggers, 16 year old Lachie Knights, said they wanted to show the community that youths do care about others in the community.

“BYAC wants to give the community a better view of youth and show that we’re not all mall rats,” he said.

“Helping the community is what I enjoy most about being in BYAC, it’s the reason why most of us got involved.”

Beangala Ward Councillor and Youth Portfolio, Jan Farrell, said the free hug day was an initiative of the young people themselves.

“The members of BYAC have arranged the free hug

day because they want to remind people to look after each other at a time of year when unfortunately many can feel particularly lonely,” she said. “At the same time... it promotes goodness in people – then there’s the undisputed fact that hugs make you feel warm and fuzzy, supported and secure.”

BYAC is supported by the City of Greater Geelong Youth Development Unit and BATForce (Barwon Adolescent Task Force).

Visit the Voice website and see video footage of the hugging action in the Terrace, www.oceangrovevoice.com.

AT the next Ocean Grove Rotary Community Market on New Year’s Day, visitors are being encouraged to dig through their costume box and attend the market dressed up.

An award will be given to the best stall-holder costume and on-the-spot prizes will be handed out to visitors as they walk around Kingston Park.

There will also be a $150 dollar voucher raffled off on the day, with Faggs Mitre 10 Wallington generously donating a voucher for each of the summer markets.

Rotary Ocean Grove Community Market is on Sunday January 1 at Kingston Park off Wallington Road from 9.30am to at least 2pm.

THANK YOU: Nick Chandley of Faggs Mitre 10 gets an appreciative handshake from Jim Ricchini of Ocean Grove Rotary.

GROUP HUG: Ocean Grove was the scene of random acts of friendly hugging last week.

Arts show delivers crucial funds

THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove recently presented cheques to Rainbow Riders, Cottage by the Sea and the Disabled Surfers Association from funds raised at their art show. Mark Beshara (Disabled Surfers Association) thanked Margaret Campbell, President of Rotary, for the support provided by Rotary. “This ongoing support enables the branch to continue to effectively conduct event days for the physically and intellectually challenged.”

Wise up on the water

KEY agencies have joined forces to take part in a free community boating day next month in a bid to support safe and enjoyable use of the Barwon estuary.

The boating day will be held on Sunday January 8 at the Ocean Grove Boat Ramp, off Guthridge Street.

Representatives from Barwon Coast, Parks Victoria, Bellarine Police, Water Police, DPI Fisheries, Transport Safety Victoria-Maritime

Safety division, the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and local angling and environment groups will be in attendance to create awareness on responsible boating within the Barwon estuary system.

The day will start at the boat ramp at 9am, allowing boat and powered water craft operators, as well as locals and visitors to the area to come down and find out about the importance of complying

with the 5 knot speed limit for personal safety, beach user safety and to protect the natural values of the estuary.

Opportunities will also be available to get your boat inspected for free to avoid further penalties, and learn simple tips on how to share this resource without conflict. The day will finish at 1pm.

“The Barwon estuary is heavily used over summer by families, and the Ocean Grove boat ramp is the

key access point for boat operators and powered watercraft,” said Maddie Glynn of Barwon Coast.

“The day is about creating awareness of all river users, protecting the natural environment and understanding the boating regulations.

Maddie urged locals and visitors to: “Come down and have a chat to the agency representatives who will be able to assist you with all your boating and fishing enquiries.”

SAFETY FIRST: Key agencies will be offering advice on enjoying local waterways.

Mark Beshara (DSA) with Margaret Campbell, President of Rotary.

Hey cheeky readers, its Cheeky Time in the OG Voice.Hope all my animal friends had a great Xmas. I scored big in the presents department. Under the tree I got a pigs ear, liver treats, a new ball, some ropey thing for chewing and a bandana so I look like my human.Oliver from Ocean Grove sent me an email question this week, he wants to know

what foods dogs should avoid. Good question Oliver, even though we dogs love chomping on anything from lobster to thongs, there are some foods that are very bad for us. Us dogs should NEVER eat chocolate, mushrooms, tomatoes, grapes, sultanas, onions, caffeine, alcohol, raw eggs, citrus fruits, and cooked bones. The cooked bones can splinter and damage our throats and stomachs. If you are unsure of what foods to feed your pet, give your friendly vet a call. They have some great info and love giving out advice. Whenever I pop in to see them I

get a few pats and a liver treat.p.s big thanks to Peter and Deryn for not making me wear a Santa hat and pose for an uncomfortable looking photo.Keep sending in your cheeky questions to cheeky@

oceangrovevoice.com or at my FB page facebook.com/cheeky.mobbs.If you have a pet and want to see him/her in my column, send your photos in.

Cheeky out.

New Year greetingsHappy New Year to all readers of Ocean Grove Voice. I trust you have all enjoyed the festive season and made the most of the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula this summer. It has been great to see so many people enjoying the beaches, parks and open spaces. This is such a wonderful region with so much to offer people of all ages!Surf life saversAs the Member for

Bellarine, I would like to thank the Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads surf life saving clubs and their army of volunteers who do a wonderful job keeping both locals and tourists safe on our beaches and in the water over summer. We have the most beautiful beaches on the Bellarine and the local surf life saving clubs play a very important role in helping us all enjoy the sun, sand and surf!

School returns soonIt is not long now until school resumes for 2012 and I wish Bellarine students all the best for the new school year. Education is so important and we are very lucky on the Bellarine to have so many excellent educational institutions. As the Member for Bellarine, I will continue to push for the State Government to commit to the much needed upgrade of facilities at

Portarlington Primary school. We have worked hard as a community to demand funding for this project that will make what is already a great school even better.I also hope 2012 will see the state government decide to continue funding for the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). This program allows local secondary schools such as Bellarine Secondary College, Newcomb

Secondary College and Geelong High School provide a high level of individual support and to develop a curriculum that meets the needs of students who might otherwise not continue their education. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with.

Fired up for visitors

Above: a campsite worker using the an appropriate foam extinguisher begins to put out an oil fire. Right, a CFA crew member demonstrates the pitfalls of using the wrong type of extinguisher to tackle an oil pan fire.

SUMMER campers are in safe hands this summer with Ocean Grove CFA holding its annual fire training session for local caravan park operators.

Matthew Geerings from Ocean Grove Fire Brigade said the sessions have been held for the past four years, and this year attracted the interest of holiday parks all the way to Torquay.

“It was something that the brigade came up with for the caravan parks before their busiest season began, to help them assist the brigade over summer,” he said. “We had about 40 people there from 12 different parks from the

Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast, originally it was just an Ocean Grove thing but it’s spread to include the whole Bellarine.”

Matthew said the training included teaching different fire extinguishing methods in an effort to reduce the number of CFA call-outs over summer to minor fires.

“District 07 (Barwon South Western) comes down to talk to the caravan parks about the general safety requirements they have to meet,” he said.

“It includes theoretical and practical demonstrations, fire extinguisher training and correct use.”

In the four years the sessions have been running, Matthew said they have seen results in that the number of call-outs to local caravan parks has reduced.

David Wynn from Wynndean Caravan Park, said the training session gives staff the chance to learn how to use potentially life-saving fire safety equipment correctly.

“It gives staff and managers the chance to learn practical skills in using extinguishers and fire wheels in different fire situations,” he said.

“It ultimately gives the knowledge and confidence to use the tools correctly.”

Tap into the Bohemian side

OCEAN Grove shoppers are being encouraged to make the trip across the traffic lights and visit an often forgotten part of the CBD.

Unofficially dubbed the Mind, Body and Spirit corner, traders are concerned the four stores situated on the bend of The Parade are going unnoticed by locals and tourists alike because of their location.

The four stores include two restaurants, Mojoes Spice Kitchen and Anahata Café , a second-hand book store, Books on Parade, and the spirituality haven, Tranquility Base.

The Parade Shopping Centre was built in 1955 and according to Alix

Townsend’s ‘These Friendly Shores’ housed the town’s first resident pharmacist, a sports shop and a butcher.

Over the years, many businesses have come and gone however Tranquility Base has remained as the longest standing business with more than 20 years at the same site.

One of Tranquility Base’s employees, Ondra Gangell, said a lot of people are surprised to find they are still there after all these years.

Ondra said they get customers who come over to visit Tranquility Base only to discover the other businesses located there.

“They come over to visit us and they are shocked to learn there is an Indonesian

and Indian restaurant here that they didn’t know about,” she said.

Books on Parade owner, Lisa Sutherland said it’s frustrating that people don’t know they are there.

“I think people think there isn’t anything here because for a while Tranquility Base was here on its own,” she said. “I’m still getting people who come in and are surprised because they didn’t know we’re here, there’s parking out the front and the back but maybe without a lot of signage they just don’t know.”

Lisa said all the business operators have formed a bond due to their unique position describing the group as a ‘family’.

CONTRARY to previous reports, the new pedestrian bridge linking the Grove and Barwon Heads has been named after William Harrier. Or so the town’s humorous weekend runners group will have us believe. The Ocean Grove Harriers have also re-adopted the new Main Beach toilets as their clubrooms. The Harriers set off from clubrooms at 7am every Saturday. SIGN UP: Harriers Phil Emery at the gateway to the Grove.

THE Terrace’s battle of the Mos has come to an end for the year with Voice readers declaring it a draw.

The Piping Hot Chicken Shop waged a facial hair war against Ocean Grove Quality Meats with representatives racing to see who could grow the best mo over the month while raising money for Movember.

The Movember event encourages men to don a moustache for the month of November to

raise funds and awareness for men’s wellbeing, especially prostate health and depression.

Owner of Ocean Grove Quality Meats, Colin Smith, won the donation competition by raising the most money.

“We were the winners as we raised more, we got $382,” he said.

Either way it was a great effort by both teams.

Voice readers were able to give their vote on Colin, Mat Rantall and Ben Chudoschnik’s mos and with the numbers too close to call, the competition has ended in a draw.

Friendly sledging and banter was exchanged across The Terrace all month but the boys will don their mos again in 2012, with all donations all going to the good cause.

WINNERS: Colin and Ben.

Happy New Year from thebusinesses of Ocean Grove

January Ocean Grove said goodbye to 2010 in summer style with a 41 degree day packing out beaches and New Year’s Eve celebrations before a wetter than average summer followed. Ocean Grove recorded its highest daily rainfall in a year with 24mm of rain falling over the town on January 14. Residents and tourists flocked to Ocean Grove Park in abundance for its range of summer activities with more than 5,000 people visiting the annual Tranquility Fair. The inaugural outdoor cinema also managed to dodge the rain to host two successful open air movie screenings with people enjoying both Mamma Mia and Up.

The sun came out for Australia Day with people heading to Main Beach to celebrate by flying a kite, with many making their own on the day at the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Lion Club event. The Grubbers started their year off with a bang with holidaying ex-Essendon AFL coach, Matthew Knights, hosting an on-field training session with the senior team in Collendina.

FebruaryOcean Grove’s summer of rain continued with the town copping the tail end of Queensland’s Cyclone Yasi which dumped 51.6mm of rain on the town over 24 hours and

resulted in wide-spread flash flooding and power outages on the Bellarine. The devastating Queensland floods kick-started a bumper year of fundraising from generous Ocean Grovers with over $10,000 raised for the flood relief effort at a one day music festival held at Ocean Grove Hotel with local musicians. Ocean Grove Surf Lifesavers rescued two men clinging to an upturned boat 800m off Ocean Grove Main Beach in rough conditions. A year of issues plaguing the ex-HMAS Canberra dive site off Ocean Grove begin, with Parks Victoria issuing a warning for divers to be aware of loose parts coming away from the main ship structure.

It’s already that time of year again where we celebrate Christmas and New Year’s and hopefully have some time off to relax and reflect on another year in Ocean Grove. 2011 was a busy year for Ocean Grovers with numerous highlights

for locals. If there is one thing we can take away from looking back over the year, it’s that Ocean Grove is an extremely generous town if the number of fundraisers we have been involved in is anything to go by. Locals from all ages have been

involved in numerous fundraising activities in 2011 from small scale right up to national and international events. For this, we should all be proud.

THE OCEAN GROVE Business Association wishes everyone a happy and prosperous New Year and continuing good trading in 2012. Speed Limit Changes We would like to remind all traders, residents and visitors to the Ocean Grove area that

the seasonal road speed limit of 50kph applies until Easter 2012 on many roads and streets. We want everyone to have a safe holiday and we urge our readers to be particularly vigilant and careful on the roads as we experience a huge influx of visitors to our

region. There will also be extra road closures/diversions where fireworks are planned for New Years Eve, usually around Raffs Beach. Take care and be patient as you travel though the beach side area. 32nd Annual Rip to River ClassicDon’t forget that the annual “Rip to River “classic, presented by the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, will see extra traffic in the area on Tuesday 27th December 2011, particularly on the Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads road.Christmas TradingTraders, how’s your Christmas trading going

this year? Have you been affected by on-line sales, or do you have products in your store that are not available on-line and are unique to your business. On-line shopping is a growing concern for many businesses as we see closures of shops where traders cannot compete. One of the ways to combat these effects is to maintain your own special customer service at all times, and also to keep your shop looking as attractive as possible. We would love to hear your opinion – contact OGBA Secretary Lin Bell on 0403 221 737 or email him at [email protected] with your comments.

Real estate boom in Ocean GroveOcean Grove is expanding to the north at a rate of knots. Have you noticed how quickly the land sold at Oakdene Estate on Grubb Road? Schools and shops are planned for that future development. We understand titles for these blocks will be issued around August 2012.Also, in our travels we see the roadside area along Grubb Road at the new estate looks exceptionally clean and tidy. Weeds and scrub were removed a week or so ago - congratulations to those involved in this clean-up!Where are the all Christmas Lights? There doesn’t seem to be

many Christmas lights in homes this year. A few homes have put a lot of time and effort into a great display. Is the cost of electricity starting to dull this popular tradition or are Christmas lights displays going out of fashion? Pedestrian Crossing:Since the new toilet block has been finished in The Parade near Target, part of the pedestrian crossing has been altered to be in line with Target entrance, a much better result, and everybody needs to be aware of this change. Till our next column, we ask you to remember….

Isn’t it great to do business in Ocean Grove?

Ocean Grovers flocked to Geelong to help celebrate the Geelong Football Club’s 2011 AFL premiership win. Locals were decked out in their finest blue and white to help cheer on the Cats during the premiership parade. NovemberIn what was a noticeably hairier month for Ocean Grove, local men got their Mo’s on for Movember, growing out their facial hair to raise awareness for men’s health; namely prostate cancer and depression.

The fundraising continued throughout the month with the town’s inaugural MS Mega Swim held at the Bellarine Aquatic Centre. Teams of swimmers swam a relay of laps over 24 hours and raised more than $19,000 for MS Australia’s funding programs.

To continue a year of firsts, the inaugural Bellarine Relay for Life event was held in Ocean Grove with groups of cancer survivors, supporters and friends running a relay of laps over 24 hours around Collendina Oval. The event raised awareness and money for the Australia Cancer Council with donations exceeding a staggering $37,000.

Ocean Grove’s newest blocks of land were sold out within days of being released at the new Oakdene Estate on Grubb Road as well as in the newest extension to Kingston Estate off Shell Road.

Ocean Grovers took time out on the 11/11/11 to reflect on the memories of those who have died at war. Wreaths were laid at the Ocean Grove centograph ahead of

a two minute silence. The wartime memories were kept alive with a local woman, Wendy Naylor, discovering her grandfather’s stolen medals had been found and were returned to her family on the significant national day.

Ocean Grove’s out-dated public toilets in The Parade car park were finally demolished following the completion of the new facilities.

DecemberJust like previous years, Ocean Grove locals, accommodation and business owners begin to gear up for the annual summer influx of tourists to the town.

Barwon Coast’s $1 million Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity Block received the 2011 Alcoa Access

Award in the Recreation category, recognising the building’s design and disability access features.

About 3,000 people lit their candles at Ocean Grove Park as part of the Ocean Grove Carols in the Park. Despite the weather warnings, the rain stayed away for the annual event which featured performances by local primary school choirs as well as the Queenscliff Lighthouse Group and Ocean Grove Church singers.

Santa was kept busy in the lead up to Christmas making appearances at Ocean Plaza, the Ocean Grove Rotary Market, local footy clubs as well as various stop off locations around the town on Christmas Eve to the delight of local children.

The new Barwon Heads Bridges were both officially named at an unveiling ceremony held for the community. The road bridge remained as the Barwon Heads Bridge and the pedestrian bridge was officially named the William Buckley Bridge after a competition was held looking for suggestions.

Lucky students meet heroes

A STOKE of luck helped a group of Ocean Grove Primary School students meet some of their cricketing heroes.

About 55 grade five and six students from Ocean Grove were invited to the MCG on December 12 to watch a practice match between the Melbourne Stars and Renegades T20 cricket teams.

The group was part of 5000 students who attended the match as part of the Milo Cricket program and was one of two lucky schools chosen to have their photo taken with the team.

Ocean Grove Primary School’s Phys Ed coordinator, Richard Hughes, said the kids were very excited to meet

some of the players. “As the game was being

played the team members were walking around signing autographs and posing for photos,” he said.

“They loved it, when they went out on the ground for the photo; there was time for a chat and some quick g-days from the players.”

Just rewardsLOCAL schools have earned top scores in this year’s VCE with two students receiving ATARs in the high nineties.

Bellarine Secondary College student and dux of her year 12 class, Holly Johnson, was awarded an ATAR of 99.65, the second highest score in all of Geelong’s schools.

Bellarine’s Principal, Colin Sing said teachers have been amazed at Holly’s dedication and maturity when it comes to her studies.

“She is invariably willing to complete extra work and study to enhance her knowledge and improve her academic progress,” he said.

Holly received scores in the high forties out of a possible 50 for the majority of her subjects with her ATAR placing her in the top 150 students in the state.

Bellarine’s schools continued to impress with St Ignatius College also announcing their dux of the college, Renee Jacovides, who received an ATAR of 95.85.

Renee studied English, Literature, Mathematical

Methods, Studio Art and Visual Communication & Design and credited her high scores to studying subjects she enjoyed as well as a self-imposed ban on Facebook.

Renne is hoping to study architecture at the University of Melbourne next year and was a Melbourne University Kwong Dow Lee Young Scholar during both year 11 and 12.

St Ignatius Head of Art, Chris Wood said Renee was committed to her studies this year giving 100 per cent effort throughout the year.

“She was focused, followed her instincts, was extremely skillful in all materials she used and is extremely talented and creative,” she said.

“She gained impressive study scores of 47 for Studio Arts and 41 for Visual Communication, for which she is to be congratulated.”

For students who maybe didn’t achieve the ATAR they were hoping for, Colin Sing said VCE is not the be all and end all.

“There are always options for people to get to their destination, they might have to take a different path initially but if they are determined and focused they will get where they want to be,” he said. “At our awards ceremony, Andrew Orvis (from the Queenscliff Music Festival) was our guest speaker and talked about how he didn’t get the ENTER score he wanted but he has gone on to achieve a lot in his career.”

Rarity spotted over lake

NATURE Report this week is the Whiskered Tern.

This bird is classed as ‘near threatened’ in Victoria, but they can currently be seen at Lake Connewarre. They are not easy to photograph as they are constantly on the move during the day searching for food.

The Whiskered Tern is a small tern with a slightly forked tail. The birds have a black crown and white

cheeks and sides of neck, with dark grey underparts, white undertail and wings. The eye is brown and the bill and legs are red. The sexes are similar. Non-breeding Whiskered Terns are similar to breeding adults except the underparts are white, the forehead is white and the dark crown is streaked white. Whiskered Terns also have a slightly forked tail.

The Whiskered Tern

is also known as the Marsh Tern or Black-fronted Tern. In Australia, the Whiskered Tern is scattered in most regions of the mainland except for the very dry inland desert regions.

The Whiskered Tern is also found in Southern Europe, Asia, south-eastern Africa and Madagascar. It occurs as a migrant, vagrant or winter visitor throughout Europe, Africa and Australia.

Whiskered Terns are migratory and nomadic.

The Whiskered Tern is found in shallow freshwater wetlands, freshwater swamps, salt lakes, floodwaters, sewage farms, irrigated croplands and large dams.

They feed on small fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and insects and spend their time hovering over the water or swooping and diving for food.

It’s lovely to see a near

threatened species of bird on our door step, and it’s worth stopping near the Barwon Heads Airport to look out for the Whiskered Tern!

The Brolga family can still be seen in the same area, which is great. The Brolga chick is now about a metre tall!

Wishing everyone a Happy 2012

CheersJennifer Carr

SARAH Carroll’s Christmas show at the Chicken Shop fullfilled its reputation for getting the Grove into the Christmas spirit. The show featured everything from the Barwon Heads Ukele Group to Sweet Delores and a Steve McEwan and Beau Torrence duo. Highlights included the ukele group’s second and third songs of a four set performance, while Beau and Steve’s tribute to former Chook Shop Captain John Bowman had the audience in stitches, including the subject of the ditty.

Children came from as far as Ballarat to take part in Grove artist Karen McGlynn’s Art Skool exhibition at Studio One across the Bridge. Art appreciators were packed in tight as the room buzzed with colourful artworks, gorgeous cakes and beautiful bejewelled children wearing the crowns ‘Queen Kaz’ had given them for this most auspicious occasion. The children were treated to a touch of ceremony with the special appearance

of Councillor Barbara Abley who holds the portfolio for the Arts and Culture. Councillor Abley spoke with passion about the importance of integrating art into the lives of our children and her words gave a wonderful sense of gravitas to the opening of the exhibition. The children in the room looked very proud and happy indeed. Kazworks kids are called E-Kids because they’re trained to be art entrepreneurs.

OCEAN Grove-based brothers Matthew and Thomas Bean are now State Gridiron champions.

Earlier this month, Matthew 18, and younger brother Thomas, 16, were an integral part of the Bay City Buccaneers that defeated Croydon Rangers in a thrilling match to become Junior Vic BOWL champions.

What made the win even more special, young Thomas was awarded the MVP award on the day, and both brothers scored touchdowns in the win.

In the Grand Final, Tom played in the Quarter-back position and Matthew lined up as the Full-back.

The win against the Rangers followed the Buccaneers’ victory over the Rangers in the senior ranks earlier this year.

The Buccaneers who won the game 16-14, shot to a 16-nil lead before the Rangers fought back in the second half.

Matthew said the Grand Final win was even more enjoyable given the Rangers undefeated season and the fact the game was played on Croydon‘s home turf.

“It was a tough game, because both times we played Croydon during the season and they were pretty much unstoppable,” said

Matthew, who trains in the gym four times a week.

“They were our toughest team.

“In the Grand Final we had a 16-nil lead in the first half, and then we held them off in the second half to win.

“They scored a touchdown and we were up by two points and then we stopped their two-point conversion to win.”

Bay City Buccaneers Layke Rossiello said while Matthew and Thomas were different players both had brought a high level of leadership towards the team.

“Matthew was the defensive captain and Tom was the offensive captain,” he said.

“Two completely different players – Tom has a high level of smarts on the field, where Matt is more physical and aggressive

on the field with his body shape.”

18-year-old Matthew, who will play senior Gridiron for the Bay City Buccaneers in 2012, has recently finished his VCE studies at St Joseph’s College in 2011 and plans to study either Psychology or Criminology next year at University.

Meanwhile 16-year-old Thomas will continue to play elite Gridiron as he moves into Year 12 at St Joseph’s College in 2012.

Both Thomas and Matthew have recently been selected to represent Australia in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Oceania World Cup qualifier match to be played on the Gold Coast in February next year against American Samoa.

Matthew was also nominated from Australia for the IFAF World team.

OCEAN Grove soccer players were involved in a charity England versus Soctland match earlier this month. The Albion Cup was played at the Howard

Glover ground to raise money for the Bravehearts foundation. All the players were drawn from the Geelong Sunday league soccer competition,

which includes Surfsid Waves. Waves players Nick Hargreaves, Adrian Hawken (goalkeeper) and Andy Hedgesall earned their first England caps during their 3-1 win over the old firm. The Bravehearts Foundation aims to ‘Break the Silence’, provide healing and support, engender child sexual assault prevention and protection strategies; advocate for understanding and promote increased education and research.

cobras cricket

COLLENDINA A-Grade remain at the top of the BPCA ladder after an impressive seven-wicket win over last season’s premiers Barwon Heads on December 17, writes Mark Heenan.

The Cobras remain unbeaten after six rounds and in the process they squeezed Barwon Heads out of the top four with the reigning premiers now sitting in fifth place.

Collendina captain Jye Hearps said he could not ask for a better start to the season.

“Absolutely, almost perfect,

with a bit of luck (hopefully) the form can continue in the new year,” Heaps said after the match.

The Seagulls elected to bat first in the 40 over per side one-day clash at Barwon Heads and compiled 8/158 from their 40 overs.

Cobras bowling pair Jye Hearps (3/28) and Jamie Brennan (3/18) took wickets at regular intervals to keep the home side at bay.

In reply, an unbeaten swashbuckling knock of 93 from Cobra batsman Corey Walter help set up the win

for the visitors, while Ben Ricardo provided good support with his innings of 46.

In the end, Collendina won with eight overs to spare and finished at 3/164 after their 32 overs.

In the B-Grade, Barwon Heads exacted revenge over the Cobras in a close encounter at Collendina.

The game went down to the wire with the Seagulls winning the match in the final over to finish their 40 overs at 4/204.

Winning the toss and

electing to bat first, Collendina made 7/196 from their 40 overs.

B-Grade captain Leigh Keast top scored with 42, while youngster Byron Taylor (36) and Alan Rayner provided good support with the willow.

In reply, Barwon Heads batted well with their run rate nudging five runs an over, Byron Taylor the only notable wicket-taker for the Cobras after he took 2/29 from his seven overs.

C-Grade saw St Leonards defeat Collendina by 35

runs at Len Trewin Reserve in their one-day clash at St Leonards.

Meanwhile, Cobras batsman Rob Stanic guided Collendina to a massive 192-run victory with his retired unbeaten innings of 102 against St Leonards 1 in their D-Grade match at Conneware.

Collendina compiled 3/264 from their 40 overs; in reply St Leonards were dismissed for 72, Cobras bowler Clynt Combridge the chief wicket taker with 3/8 from his four overs.

Grubbers back up with the pace-setters

DOUBLESINGLE BUNK

THE Grubbers moved a step closer to cementing a BPCA A-Grade finals berth after defeating nearby rivals Wallington by four wickets on Saturday December 17.

Ocean Grove’s win over the Wallabies helped them to move into third position on the A-Grade ladder.

Wallington won the toss and batted first in the re-scheduled one-day match, posting 8/156 from their 40 overs.

An innings of 47 from Wallington batsman Ben Atkinson was the highlight for the visitors, while Marcus Wirth was the pick of the Ocean Grove bowlers taking 3/16 from his eight overs.

In reply, Grubber batting pair David Turner (60) and David Bate (37) shared in a 92-run third wicket partnership to steer the home side out of trouble from 2/35 to 3/127.

Ocean Grove finished at 6/163 after 34 overs to register a comfortable victory, Daniel Connoley was the major wicket-taker for the Wallabies claiming 3/38 from his eight overs.

Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron admitted that while satisfied with the team’s win, the goal now is for the Grubbers to fill a near full strength side for the new year.

“Yes, it was a good win,” Cameron said. “Hoping to get everyone injury free after the break and raring to go.”

Ocean Grove’s next game is against Collendina

COREY Bampfield’s innings of 75 helped Ocean Grove secure a 92-run win over Wallington in their B-Grade match at Wallington.

Batting first, the Grubbers posted 7/199 from their 40 overs, apart from Bampfield’s innings Mitch Hodgson (37) and opening batsman Lucas Baulch (28) also provided good support.

In reply, Ocean Grove restricted Wallington to 7/107 from their 40 overs, bowlers Darren Craig and Tom Kent taking two wickets apiece.

OCEAN Grove won their C-Grade match against Queenscliff by three wickets at Shell Road.

Batting first Queenscliff were bowled out for 153, while in reply Ocean Grove easily accounted for the Coutas posting 7/160 from 32 overs.

IN D-Grade, Ocean Grove 1 defeated Drysdale by seven wickets, meanwhile Wallington defeated Ocean Grove 2 in a much closer encounter by three runs.

Dan Roddis takes the wicket of Wallington’s Jack Campbell. Darren Cameron defends a Marcus Wirth ball while Shaun Fankhauser covers the wicket.

Grove’s goalWITH the 2011 competitive season over, the results tallied and under lock and key it was time for a bit of fun for the 13th Beach crew in the form of the Greenroom Expression Session and the season ending Presentation Night.

With great prizes up for grabs including a Santa Cruz Surfboard, the Greenroom Expression Session was a blast. The whole crew took to the air, pulling off some radical moves. Club President Elliott Gray, the Collier boys, Mouse, Matt Devitt and the Harfields were in top form, throwing their boards about in the fun 2 to 3 foot waves at Clubbies. Gus Harfield, straight from the Aussie Titles displayed great maturity with some amazing slashes and gouging turns. Michael Van Der Klooster took off and landed a number of spectacular airs.

In the Junior Division, Henry and Jemima Hutchins, Bronson Field, the Harrisons, Will Dixon and the Willett brothers busted some big moves losing their fins on numerous waves.

It’s been a great year for the club with many members gaining high State Rankings and Gus Harfield taking out the Junior Men’s State Title. The surfers have put in a lot of hard work to develop their skills and fitness and credit also goes to club coach Cam Lamperd who has put in a great deal of work especially with the younger crew.

The Club Presentation was held at the 13th Beach SLSC and was packed out with beats coming from DJ Fraze, the dance floor was hopping and a great night had by all.

Each Division has been hotly contested once again this year and many results went down to the last comp of the season, except for Open A. After winning the first four events, Josh Johnson Baxter had the Division sewn up, making it back to back titles and he headed to Mexico for some R and R and big waves. That left the Collier brothers, Dane Hoyer and Shawn Todd to fight it out for the minor places.

New year derbyTHE Collendina and Ocean Grove encounter is shaping up as a classic BPCA A-Grade cricket match on Saturday January 7, writes Mark Heenan.

The battle lines will be drawn between the cross town rivals in the 40-over per side one-day Round 7 clash at Collendina.

Ladder leaders Collendina will head into the match as favourites, although the Lucas Cameron led Ocean Grove Grubbers will be out to solidify their finals credentials and cement a top-four berth.

Collendina captain Jye Hearps has turned around the Cobras fortunes after their lowly 10th place last season and return them to their glory form of 2009/2010 when they won the A-Grade premiership.

The unbeaten Cobras sit at the top of the A-Grade

ladder, while Ocean Grove are firmly entrenched in the top four, sitting in third spot.

“Big month to start off 2012, if we play well we will finish top two, if we play below our capabilities then it may be a scrap for fourth place,” Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said.

Some of the key match ups include Collendina’s fast bowling stocks of Hearps, Luke Veitenheimer and Jamie Brennan versus the experienced Ocean Grove batting line up of David Bate, Dean Gills and Pat Kuipers.

In return, Grubbers bowlers Marcus Wirth and Lucas Cameron and the all-round capabilities of Michael Kenneady will have to be at their best to take down the Cobras bats of Richie Peters, Ben Ricardo and Corey Walter.

AIR BORNE

THE Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club is encouraging local netballers to take the challenge and participate in a new All Abilities Netball Team in 2012.

Ocean Grove who will field a team in 2012, are currently recruiting for next season with training sessions to be held at the Ocean Grove Netball courts during the season.

The Geelong All Abilities Netball competition is a concept that commenced in 2006 and is based at the Kardinia Park netball courts.

New Ocean Grove coach Vicki McElligott said it was a great opportunity for local netballers with a disability who live in Ocean Grove and the Bellarine region to play without travelling to the other side of Geelong.

“We have a few players who live in Ocean Grove playing with other clubs across Geelong, so we would be hoping to get them on board next season,” McElligott said.

McElligott has been integral in getting the Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club to support the All Abilities team and also helped with the funding of the project.

Other teams that will compete

in the Geelong-based All Abilities Netball Friday night competition include St Albans, Bell Park, Grovedale, St Joseph’s, Newtown and Chilwell and Bell Post Hill.

Access for all Abilities Project Officer Pat Brown said it was amazing how much the competition had grown over the past six years.

“We have nearly 50 players in the competition; mainly people with intellectual disabilities,” Brown said.

“It started off as one club entering two teams, now next season there will be seven teams.”

The 2012 competition will run in conjunction with the Bellarine Football and Netball League and the Geelong Football and Netball League seasons between April and August.

The Geelong All Abilities Netball League is supported by Leisure Networks, Karingal, Netball Geelong and Netball Victoria.
