CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to the 2018 Homecoming Queen and her Court. Faith Willett was crowned queen by Dr. Matthew Jamison and 2017 First Runner Up Homecoming Queen, Jenna Cordery, on October 20th during half time of the game against Mainland. Savanna Holt was

first runner up, Shannon DeCosta was second runner up and was third runner up. The other members of the court were: Autumn Bruce, Mackenzie Matura, Delaney Gould, and Erica Stratten. Each senior student was chosen to be Student of the Month because of exemplary behavior, character and performance. We appreciate the support of each of the community organizations. There is a critical connection between a successful public high

school and a strong relationship with its community.

Congratulations to Ms. Pumpkin Mary Grace Jamison! Miss Pumpkin and the Pumpkin Patch - Brynn Bowman, Jenna Clark, Laney Guido, Mary Jamison, and Haley Stanks were in this year’s annual Halloween parade!

OCHS Students of the Month Elizabeth Murray - Elizabeth always has a kind word for her classmates and works very

well in groups, and is constantly enthusiastic about learning. Furthermore, setbacks are not viewed as “failures,” but rather opportunities to improve and learn. She is the type of person who has found a good balance between humility and confidence. This is only part of what makes her an incredible student. Elizabeth contributes a great amount of time making the “Current O.C.” a great broadcast. Her contributions are valued by her teachers and fellow crew members. She even volunteers her own personal time on the weekends to help gather footage; her dedication is evident.

Sean Roop - Sean transferred to OCHS from out of state in his sophomore year, which is a

hard adjustment for a young student. He did not let this obstacle deter him from being the best he can be; he is always helpful and completes his work in a timely manner with quality. Sean is very mature and always has worked helping and tutoring other students. He works hard on “Homework Hangout,” and has proven to be a positive leader in our school. Sean constantly shines with a positive energy and has a smile on his face.

On Sunday October 22, 2017 Ocean City High School recognized its athletic alumni and inducted members into the Ocean City High School Sports Hall of Fame. This year’s Hall of Fame Inductees are Coach Trish LeFever, Coach Mike Pellegrino, Judy Gayle, Brett Johnson, Cory Picketts Terry, John Richardson, Brittany Sedberry, Chad Severs, Renee Tomlin, and the 1997 Field Hockey Team! The HIB Team, in conjunction with S.T.O.P., SADD & Wellness Club, are excited to announce our October Awareness Events! Our team has worked very hard to put m together many events on that will promote everything from simple acts of kindness to knocking out substance abuse. We would love to have the support of the staff in showing our

students how to better their lives and others! Below are this week's events: ANTI-BULLYING/WEEK OF RESPECT October 2 – 4th Annual Chalk Message Project – Chalk positive messages to your peers and let them know they matter.

October 3 – Link Up Against Bullying - Students will pledge an anti-bullying message by tracing and coloring their hand on a paper ‘chain’ which will be linked together and hung on the school with a poster version of the pledge to promote a safe school climate October 4 – Red Raider Anti-Bullying Notes – Students will write kind thoughts/positive quotes on red or white

sticky notes and place on a black red raider silhouette

October 5 – OC Rocks – Anti-Bullying Rocks – Design and paint OC rocks with an anti-bullying message to place in rock garden in the courtyard ** Faculty and Staff will wear their 100% red t-shirts. Students will be encouraged to wear blue

October 9th – Sprinkle Kindness -- Take a selfie with Sprinkle Kindness Backdrop October 9 – Kindness- Pass It On Sticker -- Each person at OCHS receives 2 stickers- one to share with a person who is exhibiting unspoken/spoken kindness, and another to give to

their recipient, so that person can pass it forward October 12 – Positive Quotes Tee Shirt Day -- Design positive thoughts/anti-bullying t-shirt contest, wear positive quotes t-shirts (staff & students) Prizes given to most creative designs! FIRE SAFETY - October 7-13 -- Members of the STOP, REBEL and SADD clubs will travel to OCFD three days this week with the kindergarten students from OCPS to support Fire Safety week. The HIB/Safety Team, Dr. Wendy O'Neal, Dane Tabano, Michael Pomatto, Ashley Palmentieri and Jill Berenato

PSAT testing took place on October 10th. In addition to being a precursor to the SAT and a valuable guidance instrument, the PSAT could potentially fulfill the testing requirement for graduation mandated by the state of New Jersey. The school district assumed all costs for the test. By taking the PSAT all juniors were automatically enrolled in the National Merit Scholarship program. We had 863 students take the test. While they were testing, seniors participated in Senior Workshops. The workshops included a general college application presentation; healthy lifestyle choices; and essay/resume writing

Univest comes to OCHS to speak about Budgeting and Credit The students in Mrs. Merighi’s Banking/Credit/Insurance and College Accounting Classes were given a presentation called “Get Smart about Credit.” Samantha North and Jen Castaldi came to Ocean City High School from Univest. They spoke with the students about budgeting and had them work through a mock scenario to determine if they would have enough income to pay for their spending choices. Their income information was provided, and they were able to make choices about their housing, food, transportation and other expenses. In addition, Samantha North and Jen Castaldi spoke to the students about credit. They discussed how it is built, maintained, analyzed, and repaired.

On Saturday October 13th, Photography and Art Club students visited Grounds for Sculpture Gardens. Students experienced walking in a magically landscaped place filled with sculptures based on famous paintings. The weather was on the chilly side but it did not deter the students from enjoying the environment. The Park is a delight to all of the senses. In order to bring them closer to the artworks, visitors are encouraged to touch sculpture with care and respect. Visual, tactile, and auditory experience is enhanced with dance, music, poetry, painting, photography, and other forms of art, without disturbing the enjoyment of the sights, sounds, smells, and sanctity of nature.

Students in SADD Club and REBEL Club, along with advisors Mrs. Cathcart and Ms. Kline, went to the Primary School to assist students with Fire Safety Week. High School students read Clifford the Firehouse Dog to different classes, worked individually with students on worksheets and created fire safety hats. High School students then assisted Primary School students at the Ocean City Firehouse where firemen explained the different equipment and trucks used during fire calls.

Congratulations to the OCHS Latin Club Volleyball Team, after their winning the OCHS InterClub Volleyball Tournament, on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. Congratulations and thanks to all club teams-----French Club (Sharon Elco), Spanish and Italian Clubs (Lauren Miley and Giovanna Capizola), and History Club (Barb Daniel). The sheer energy and enthusiasm shown by all teams were notable and praiseworthy!

Members of History Club met on Tuesday of this week to update our display for Club Carnival. We also attended Club carnival to attract new members. SADD Club and REBEL Club participated in Red Ribbon Week in October to spread the awareness of drug abuse. Both clubs, under the guidance of advisors Mrs. Cathcart and Ms. Kline, joined together for the following activities:

On Sunday October 7, OCHS Key Clubbers attended the annual Fall Rally at Six Flags Great Adventure in collaboration with other high school Key Clubs to learn more about our Lieutenant Governors. Members enjoyed the theme park’s many thrilling rides afterwards, and also took part in a scavenger hunt in which they were to find “Tito the Tomato”.

The OCHS Key Club had another successful day at the 33rd annual

Ocean City Clean Action Beach Sweep on Saturday, October 20. There, our members committed to keeping the environment clean by picking up litter along our beaches near Sixth Street and Carey Stadium. Ocean City is one of sixty different locations in New Jersey that hosted a Beach Sweep that day.

Key Club President Meg Sutter and Vice President Casey McLees along with Mainland’s Key Club’s President and Vice President were invited by Kiwanis of Northfield-Linwood to have a dinner where they could collaborate ideas. It was a great opportunity for our club to discuss

ideas with our parent club. During the dinner, a new board was elected as well as new goals and initiatives introduced. We presented our clubs past and present events to their chapter. The opportunity to see their meeting was great and will help us carry about the true meaning of being part of a service organization.
