PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Physical Therapists work with individualswho have a permanent or temporaryimpairment in their physical or mentalfunctioning. They help patients to recoverand improve their ability to perform tasks intheir daily living and working environments.Physical Therapists help patients to improvetheir basic motor functions and tocompensate for permanent loss of function.

TasksAssess patients’ occupationalperformance by methods such asreviewing records, interviewing thepatient and his family, and gatheringrelevant information;Plan individual and/or group physicaltherapy treatment programs;Implement physical therapy treatmentprograms to promote, develop,maintain and/or restore occupationalperformance potential;Delegate components of treatment toassistants/aides by instructing, observingand monitoring treatment provided toensure quality patient care;Maintain patient records includingclinical outcomes and progress;Instruct those with permanentdisabilities in the use of adaptiveequipment such as wheelchairs,orthotics and aids for eating anddressing.

Basic Educational RequirementA Physical Therapist must be a

graduate of a bachelor’s degree in PhysicalTherapy. There are employers who requirethe equivalent license issued by theProfessional Regulations Commission (PRC).

Skills and CompetenciesDemonstrated ability to:Communicate effectively both verballyand in writing;Teach, consult and advise;Work independently and as a memberof a team;

Plan, organize and conduct therapytreatment programs;Use tact and understanding in dealingwith patients, family members andcaregivers;Perform duties under stressful conditions;Prepare and maintain accurate,concise case records of patients;Operate related adaptive equipment.Utilize computer software programsincorporated in clinical practices.

Physical Attributes and CharacteristicsA Physical Therapist must be patient

and must have strong interpersonal skills toearn the trust and respect of their clients.Patience is necessary because many clientsmay not show rapid improvement. Ingenuityand imagination in adapting to individualneeds are also important. Those working inhome health care services must be able toadapt to a variety of settings.

Salary/CompensationPhysical Therapists in hospitals make

around P12,000 per month, while those inprivate pratice may earn as much asP42,000 to P52,000 per month.

Employment OpportunitiesPhysical Therapists can work in various

settings:hospitals and other healthcare andcommunity based facilities;large rehabilitation centers; andhome health care services.

Physical Therapists are also increasinglytaking on supervisory roles with physicaltherapy assistants and aides taking morehands-on responsibility. Assistants and aidesnow work more closely with clients underthe supervision of a therapist. The demandfor Physical Therapists is expected to rise asa result of the growth in the number ofindividuals with disabilities or limited functionwho require therapy services.
