HISTORY
the political history of Occidental Mindoro necessa-rily begins with the commercial history of Mindoro Island
Mindoro Island was originally known to the ancients as Ma-I
it was formally called Mait, and known to the Chinese traders before the coming of the Spanish.
![Page 8: OCCIDENTAL AND ORIENTAL MINDORO](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022013118/55a609b81a28ab26638b468e/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The island was a major anchorage in the Southeast Asia trade route during the pre-Philippines period
Chinese, Arabs, and Indians traded with the natives
In 1570, the Spanish began to explore the island and named it Mina de Oro (Mine of Gold) after finding some precious metal and later compressed it to Mindoro.
The natives of Mindoro were called Manguianeseand now anthropologically known as Mangyans.

MY INSIGHTS
I have learned that Mindoro Island is reached in natural resources especially in marine resources and agriculture. I have learned that the Mangyan tribe have their different practices, they also differ in their way of dressing and also the dialect they have spoken are different in each tribe. I have also learned that most of the Mangyan are uneducated. Mangyan parents believed that experience is the best teacher for their child to learn. These indigenous people were good in pottery making and weaving and most of them practice sweddin farming.

I have realized that no matter what are our beliefs andpractices we should respect one another. I haverealized the importance of this subject and it helps mebetter understand the culture of others.
I intend to visit the beautiful sceneries ofOriental and Occidental Mindoro most especially theApo Reef and Puerto Galera. I want also to meet theMangyan tribes and I want to experience and observetheir way of living.
