THE OCALA BANNER
CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY I
All the Fun Not For the Town Boy
VJith Gun and Dog the Country
f Boy Enjoys Life to the Limit
To the Editor of the Ocala Banner
We who have lived through thatinteresting chapter of life A Boy
r at the old Country Home Christmasp Times can recall the delightful
t = pleasures as the picture is vividlyT reproduced by the boy of today
whose good fortune it is to be blessedwith a country home or with agrandpa who has a country home
To the many boys who live in townand spend the holidays mere i wouldlike to say that it is not so dull for aboy in the country as you mightimagine and the fine impressions
x that a boy gets on a well regulatedY country home through just one
Christmas time beautifies his entirelife There isreality in it it is not abig display of paint and artificialsubjects The big tires and welcomerooms after a gallop of two miles onhorse back to the postoilice teachesappreciation
At break o day the boy is out ofT bed and before he is half dressed is
into the hall with a bound and a yellfie
of delight He is no ways carefulabout noise as that is one of thefeatures of the festivities and theidoor is slammed with a tremendousbang which brings a severe scolding
i
from grandma but her words aredrowned by the greeting of a halfdozen dogs as the boy leaps acrossthe hall to the pantry where his coatpockets are tilled with cakes anddoughnuts and his hands with lemonpies The old colored cook shoots 11
few complaining remarks at him ashe makes his way through the back-yard
a
but they fall short of their JimY
and the boy is soon into the lane thatleads to the big barn All the dogs-are at his heels ready to obey any
rrequest for they know the hardcrust from the outside edge of thatpiece of pie is coming to them and
ipossibly a cake and a coilple ofdoughnuts The next thing is a bat ¬
tie of bluff between the dogs and-
a herd of hogs With the boys as-
sistance¬
the hogs are soon put toflight An old cow is disturbed from
tt harsofc bed of straw and leaves andhe stands where she has lain for aminute to feel the warmth and meltthe frost from his baretoes
The hired maii at the barn helpshim to saddle and mount the oldmare and with the dogs and his firstnew gun he gallops off through the
V vwoods pasture and through abig swinging gate enters the plantstion From an old hedge row the
r dogs route a rabbit and a lively chase-is witnessed cross the field There-are so many cattle sheep and coltshere that he is most afraid to shootand even though he does the rab-
bit¬
makes safe in the hollow of acypress tree Just here his atten-tion
i
4s is suddenly attracted to a bighickory full of nuts lie approachesit carefully and with searching eyes j
Suddenly a squirrel drops a nut and 1
1
jumps to another tree With gut j
made ready he keeps in close pursuitThe squirrel stops and the boy shoots I
but the squirrel jumped again tooj
y quick The gun is reloaded and theIboys tierce is a little quieter The
second shot brings the littly bushy j
4 tailed beauty scrambling to theN ground The boy with almost as I
<
quick activity as the squirrel jumpsfrom his saddle and tussels here andthere with the dogs for his prize I
T Then he gallops back to where thecurling blue smoke is flavoring thei w
fresh morning air with the rich per ¬
fume of countrycured ham towhere the old red dairy is full of bigbowles of sweet milk and eggs arepiled up like cannon balls in the old
f navy yards A prouder heart never
abeat in a conquering generalsbreast
And these my dearboys are someof the realities of Christmas in thecountry and your fathersand Iwish we could be a boy again just-or a day as our memories unfold
such pictures of the dear old pastPETER STANLEY
