Register and VoteIt is your duty as a citizen to register

Free AmericaThis country of ours is a land of pro-

to this ideal and whose people are prayingand wiling to sacrifice so that all peopleof the world might enjoy liberty, happiness, and a better way of life.

Guest Editorial — The New Year

Wonder how many people made NewYear resolutions — how many kept them—New Year resolutions are fragile things,so fragile that few people bother to makethem anymore. The first day of the newyear is, in most of the world's affairs, little more than a time to change calanders.

Yet the New Year does have a spiritualsignificance. It is, in a sense, a time of re-birth — a time for breaking the shadesof the past, and striding boldly into the fu-ture. It is hope conquering disappointment. It is anticipation banishing frustration. Itis determination orercomng apathy.

Even though we make no formal, oreven conscious, resolutions, the New Year's"clean slate" invites and encourages us to—

write on it truer words, to seek new andstraighter paths, to lift our eyes to newhorizons. And even though we stumble a-gain, we, and those about us, have profitedfrom, the efforts.

Epochal eventa took place in 1957. Itwas a year of fear and unrest, of struggleand turmoil, but it ushered us to the portalof a New Year that may well be the begin-ning of a new era. Its scientific and poli-tical developments presented man withperhaps his greatest challenge in history.

How we meet the challenge in 1958could determine our outlook on New Year'sdays for generations to come.

May all of them be happy ones for you- and yours.

Through

My WindowBy Bsstefew

For several weeks glancing through my window the ^vista seemed hemmed in a patch of sky, a wisp of cloud ora sudden dash of silvery rain was all that could be seen.

A narrow world of distorted views and thoughts, ofdrifting and endless waiting slowly gives way to a brighterone. The flash of a smile, a soft-spoken word, tinklinglaughter of a child at play floating in the a'ir, the thrillingnotes of a gayly p'lumaged bird as it darts swiftly all graspthe seams and pulling gently but firmly, widen the horizon.Humor, long dormant, slowly awakens adding its healinggrace. The last threads snap and the universe is whole ^again. ( '^

"Pippa passes . . . and God's in His heaven and allis right with the world" — "for we are such stuff as dreamsare made on and our little lives are rounded by a sleep."

A dear friend brought the followirg poem — "Justin case," — she smiled. "It has helped me often so I wantto share it," said she.

DON'T QUITWhen things go.wrong, as they sometimes will,When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, ffWhen the funds are low and the debts are high,And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,When care is pressing you down a bit - -Rest you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queen with its twists and turns,As everyone of us sometime learns; And many a fellow turns aboutWhen'he might have won had he stack it out.Don't give up though the patce seems slow - -You may succeed with another blow. f|

Often the goal is nearer thanIt seems to a faint and faltering manOften the struggler has given upWhen he might have captured the victor's cup;Arid he learned too late when the night came down,How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out - -The silver tint of the cluods of doubt,And you never can £ell how close you are, ft-It may be near when it seems afar;So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,It s when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
