DMF Usages

�Solvent in synthesis of chemicals, e.g. of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and crop protection ingredients (~ 50%)

�Solvent in production of PU coated textiles such as artificial leather, rain and protection wear, footwear, medical mattress covers, surgical incise films etc. (~25%)

�Solvent in production of synthetic fibres (~10%)

Preferred solvent for PU Coating of Textiles

ECHA on DMF

�N,N-Dimethylformamide was identified as a Substance of Very High Concern

(SVHC) … as toxic for reproduction (“May damage the unborn child”), and was

therefore included in the Candidate list for Authorisation on 9/12/2012.

�The authorisation procedure aims to assure that the risks from SVHC are

properly controlled and that these substances are progressively replaced by

suitable alternatives while ensuring the good functioning of the EU internal

market.

DMF Actual status

�IOEL of DMF is 15 mg/m3 according to EC directive 2009/161/EU of

17/12/2009.

�The Italian CA proposal for restricting the manufacturing and the industrial

use of DMF (01/04/2016).

�CA of Italy proposes a DNEL inhalation of 3,2 mg/m3. Derived No-Effect

Level is limit above which peoples should not be exposed to.
