III. Printer Operation Care

A. Overview

The Printer Operation Care (POC) program for the Océ VarioPrint135/120/110 products enables the customer to perform limited service on theOcé VarioPrint 135/120/110 products. In addition to changing toner, the end-user operator is able to replace the separation feed rollers, heat exchangefoil, and the spiral cleaner as required based on the part life and service alertsdisplayed on the Operator Panel. Canon USA, highly recommends utilizingthe POC program as a method to maintain machine uptime and reduceservice technician labor costs. See the Suggested Maintenance AgreementRates Section for details.

B. Program Benefits

The POC program provides an opportunity to increase customer satisfactionwith the VarioPrint 135/120/110 series by providing customers with greatercontrol over machine uptime and productivity.

Active maintenance by the customer benefits the service organization byreducing work and travel time for the service technician. A reduction in laborand travel will enable the service technician to focus on other machines thatmay require greater attention and time.

C. Program Utilization

The customer has the option to purchase the Océ VarioPrint 135/120/110products configured with the POC program or to purchase the Océ VarioPrint135/120/110 products configured without the POC program. There are sixpackages available (see Configuration, page 4):

A VarioPrint 135/120/110 purchased with the POC program, does notrequire additional software. If the servicing dealer and customer chooseto perform POC, the customer must order the VarioPrint DP LINE POCKit-A1 (available for purchase). The kit contains the three (3) POCprogram parts and two (2) tools required for the POC program (see(Table 5, Page 21). The servicing dealer as part of the ServiceMaintenance Agreement should provide additional parts.

Should the servicing dealer and/or customer choose to suspendutilization of the POC program, either temporarily or permanently (makingthe service technician responsible for all of the required service), CanonUSA recommends that the operator be instructed to contact the servicingdealer when a POC program action (excluding Standard Program Alerts)is required. Additionally Canon USA recommends that the servicing

G. Operator Replaceable Parts

Operator Replaceable Parts (the separation feed rollers, heat exchange foil, and spiral cleaner) are service parts selected specifically for the Operator toreplace. The Operator Replaceable Parts may be stored at the customer sitefor quick access and replenished regularly by the servicing dealer based onthe monthly print/copy volumes of the VarioPrint 135/120/110.

Canon USA parts recommendations:

Operator Replaceable Parts stored at the customer location should beplaced in a locked cabinet that only the service technician and theoperator have access to.

All Operator Replaceable Parts that have been replaced should beretrieved by the servicing dealer to verify that the part was in fact ready tobe replaced and to properly dispose of the parts.

The VarioPrint DP LINE POC Kit-A1 (available for purchase) includes aninitial supply of operator replaceable parts and tools required for the operatorto use during part replacement. The tools include gloves (required whenreplacing the spiral cleaner) and a socket wrench.

I. Service Contract Considerations

The servicing dealer is responsible for the implementation of the POCprogram. It is highly recommended that any Service Contract or ServiceContract amendments involving the POC program include the followingprovisions:

The customer to maintain an authorized Operator(s) for all shifts wherethe POC program will be implemented

A storage location for Operator Replaceable Parts at the customerlocation. The storage location should be locked accessible by only theoperator and service technician.

Training: Training fees if the servicing dealer decides to charge the customer for

operator training Training for new operators and additional Key Operators Refresher training for the operator if performance is below a satisfactory

level Contact protocol between the Key Operator and the service technician Safety disclaimers to protect the dealer in the event an operator or an

unauthorized user is injured while servicing the machine Fees should the machine require extensive service due to the action (or

inaction) by the operator or an unauthorized operator Provisions to protect the servicing dealership by suspending or canceling

the POC program if the agreed provisions for operator activity, partsusage, maintenance procedures and safety are not adhered to (someexamples are below): The operator not performing assigned maintenance properly or at the

recommended service intervals Damages to the machine due to unauthorized maintenance/service The machine is maintained/serviced by anyone other than the authorized

operator or the servicing dealer Service Technician Abuse to the machine(s) Abuse of the Operator Replaceable Part inventory (using new parts

prematurely or damaging parts). The Key Operator does not use parts supplied by the servicing dealer

(purchased from Canon Aftermarket) The customer cannot maintain an authorized operator

J. Operator Safety

Customer safety is of the highest priority and concern when using the POCprogram. While performing service, safety guidelines are very important tofollow. Safety Guidelines cover three specific areas:

1. Personal Safety

Each Operator is ultimately responsible for his or her own personalsafety. To minimize personal risk of injury, the operator must follow theguidelines below at all times while conducting operator maintenance:

Take notice of all posted Safety Labels outside and inside of themachine.

Follow all instructions when replacing parts. Always wear heat resistant gloves when replacing the Spiral Cleaner. Use correct lifting techniques. Use two (2) or more people to lift weights

of more than 50 lb (22.7 kg). Remove loose clothing and jewelry. Proper footwear is recommended when lifting equipment. Do not eat, drink or smoke near the equipment. Clean hands after contact with toner. Do not touch your eyes if toner is

on your hands. Do not wash or use hot water to remove toner from clothing. Doing so

can fuse the toner into the fabric. Quickly vacuum (using an approvedvacuum for toner pickup) or brush the affected clothing with light strokes.

Some surfaces are hot and require a wait time to allow the area to coolbefore service.

2. Equipment Safety

When powering down the VarioPrint, Service Technicians or trainedOperators should always power off the system from the power buttonlocated on the top of the VarioPrint near the base of the Operator Panel.

When working inside the machine, take special care to:

Avoid contact with sharp edges. Pay special attention when two or more persons are performing

maintenance on the VarioPrint. Make sure all personnel are clear when starting the machine.

3. Tool Safety

Key Operators performing customer maintenance must be familiar withthe use of basic tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, clean wipes, andcotton swabs. The following guidelines must be followed at all times tominimize and prevent accidents:

Keep tools clean and neatly stored when they are not in use. Discard broken tools. Do not use them. Prevent tools and parts from falling into the equipment. Use the correct tool to repair or adjust the equipment. Use the tool in the way it was intended to be used.

VI. Servicing Notes

A. Service and Maintenance Strategy

The service and maintenance strategy for the Océ VarioPrint 135/120/110devices is different from the strategies for most Canon imageRUNNER orimagePRESS products. The service and maintenance strategy concept isdesigned to reduce or eliminate service calls by the service technician toprovide the customer with maximum uptime and productivity while reducinglabor for the servicing dealer.

The service and maintenance strategy reduces and eliminates service callsby having fewer service parts to replace for the VarioPrint 135/120/110 mainengine. Additionally the service and maintenance strategy is based onreplacing parts, as the service is required (via service alerts on the OperatorPanel) rather than a preventative maintenance strategy. Service alerts on theOperator Panel identify the problem or part replacement requirement. Thecorrective action for most problems is a part replacement. Further, byincorporating the POC program, the operator partially maintains theVarioPrint. This reduces service calls by the service technician.

On-board self-diagnostics supports the operator and/or service technician introubleshooting the machine to provide a corrective action. This reduces thediagnostic time considerably enabling the operator and/or service technicianto service the machine quickly and efficiently.

B. Connectivity Checklist

The Connectivity checklist is used to determine the connectivity options at thecustomer site and to define if a systems Engineer is required during theinstallation process or if the Service Technician can manage the installation. The Connectivity Checklist is available on the Canon USA e-Support Centerwebsite.

C. Implementation Checklist

The implementation checklist is used to collect information about thecustomer’s environment where the VarioPrint will be installed to determine ifadditional preparations are required to install the VarioPrint. TheImplementation Checklist is available on the Canon USA e-Support Centerwebsite.

D. Safety

The Developer Frame of the VarioPrint Series emits a strong magnetic fieldand is a danger to service technicians/system engineers with pacemakers.Service technicians/system engineers with pacemakers are not allowed toremove the Developer Frame, Drum Unit, Developer Roller, Setup Unit or toinstall or clean the Drum Unit.

Furthermore, when the Developer Frame is exposed, any individuals(technicians, customers, walk up users, etc.) with pacemakers are notallowed to be in the working area while the VarioPrint Series is beingserviced.

E. Power and Plug Requirements

Canon USA strongly suggests dedicated and properly grounded outlets beprovided for these VarioPrint devices and optional accessories. Beforeinstallation, confirm that dedicated NEMA receptacles are available for thesedevices.

The VarioPrint 135/120/110 Main Unit requires a dedicated single phase 208-240 V/20A NEMA 6-20R receptacle for proper operation. Confirm that asingle phase 208-240 V/20A NEMA 6-20R receptacle is available prior toinstallation.

I. Environmental Conditions

When installing the VarioPrint 135/120/110 the environmental conditions ofthe room should be as follows:

Table 22 – Environmental Conditions

Optimum TemperatureRange:

Between 62.6°F (17°C) and 78.8°F (26°C) for print speedsgreater than 120 ipm

Between 62.6°F (17°C) and 82.4°F (28°C) for print speeds up to120 ipm

Optimum HumidityRange:

Between 20% and 80% Relative Humidity

Atmospheric Pressure: Less than 1,000 m (3,280.8’) (898.7 hPa or 0.887 atm)

Noise (sound level): Standby: 47.3 dB; Operating: 75.3 dB

Ozone Emissions: None

NOTE: In certain areas of the country and during certain times of the year, itmay be necessary to use a humidifier or dehumidifier to attain the properhumidity levels for optimal machine performance. There is a risk thatproductivity, paper feeding, may be affected if the machine is operatedoutside of these guidelines.

The machine should not be installed in locations with significant shifts intemperature or humidity. Areas containing water, or equipment that cansignificantly alter room temperature or humidity, such as a heater, stove, orportable air conditioner, should be avoided, unless proper environmentalcontrol is available to achieve maximum productivity or quality capability.

Temperature and Humidity

The optimal humidity range for storing paper is 20% to 80% RH with aroom temperature of 62.6°F to 78.8°F (17°C to 26°C) for print speedsgreater than 120 ipm, or 62.6°F to 82.4°F (17°C to 28°C) for print speedsup to 120 ipm. Storing paper in a location that does not meet thesespecifications may affect paper feeding. For example, if the humidity istoo high, paper curling and paper jams will increase. If the humidity is toolow paper may shrink.

Temperature Gradient

If a sudden temperature change occurs, may have an adverse affect onimage positioning. Sudden temperature changes may cause the paper tobend or contract, cause the machine to malfunction, and formcondensation. Every effort should be made to maintain consistenttemperature and humidity levels in the operating environment at all timesfor the VarioPrint.

Ventilation

Ensure that there is an air exchange rate of at least 1 times per hour, andat least 1,236 ft3 (35 m3) of space in the location where the machine willbe installed.

Elevation Limitation

Install this machine at an elevation below 3,280.8’ (1,000 m) (898.7 hPa).

N. Hard Disk Drive Handling

The PRISMAsync Controller for the VarioPrint 135/120/110 Series uses aHDD (Hard Disk Drive) for storage of the firmware and image data. The HDDis easily affected by shock, vibration, and static charge. Therefore, itshandling requires special care. When transporting a HDD, available as aservice part, it must be kept in its original package until it is installedinto the main body.

Exemption clause:

Canon USA or any of its affiliates or dealers will not be liable for any damagesfor loss of data received or stored on the hard disk, including loss arising fromlost opportunity to use such data, even if Canon is informed of the possibilityof such damages. Therefore, it is recommended not to permanently storedata on the HDD without having secured copies or printouts of such data.(Review the terms of the product's limited warranty for more details.)

O. Fuser Belt End of Life Detection

The VarioPrint includes an end of life detection for the Fuser Belt. A sheetsensor, used to monitor the wear of the fuser belt, is enabled after the fuserbelt has reached 800,000 prints/copies (based on letter size). When the sheetsensor detects that the fuser belt needs to be replaced, a maintenance iconwill appear on the Operator Panel. When clicked the customer operator isinstructed call for a service technician. The service technician replaces theFuser Belt as part of regular service. The customer can make approximately15,000 additional prints/copies before the Fuser Belt end of life of has beenreached resulting in a total stop (error 6132).

IMPORTANT

The sheet sensor must be cleaned during the Fuser Belt replacement and theSheet Sensor counter must be reset to zero.

P. Wax Mode Setting

The Wax Mode is a setting on the VarioPrint that should be used if there areprint quality issues related to using Wax Paper (spotting, lines and smearing).

Wax Paper is media made moisture-proof through the application of wax. When wax paper is used, the VarioPrint can become contaminated, whichcan lead to undesired print quality issues. Many types of media may containwax.

With wax mode enabled the system will be cleaned automatically afterprinting. It is advised to enable the 'Wax mode' only when you process waxpaper or if there are print quality issues related to using Wax Paper (spotting, lines and smearing). Afterwards, the function should be disabled.

The VarioPrint has two (2) Wax Modes. Utilize wax mode '1' when there areprint quality issues with wax paper. Only select wax mode '2' when wax mode'1' is not sufficient to solve the print quality issues. Wax mode '2' requires a

Page 50: Océ VarioPrint 135/120/110 - Canon Globaldownloads.canon.com/isg_public//VarioPrint_135_120_110... · 2013-01-25 · Océ VarioPrint 135/120/110 Service Guide Océ VarioPrint 135/120/110

higher start-up temperature, which increases the start-up time of the printerand requires more time for the decomposition of the wax.

The more wax paper is printed using Wax Mode, the longer the printer needsto decompose the wax. For optimal performance of the Wax Mode, do notprint more than 50,000 sheets of wax paper at a time. However, if moreprinting is needed, allow the printer run in stand-by mode to decompose thewax, or perform print jobs that do not require wax paper.

After processing wax paper, do not power off the machine manually or put themachine into the sleep mode manually. Leave the printer in standby-mode toallow the cleaning of the wax components. After maximum two (2) hours instand-by mode, the printer will switch to sleep mode automatically. If two (2)hours are not enough to decompose all the wax, the machine will remain instand-by mode after the next job, until all the wax is cleaned.

When utilizing wax mode the TTF Drive Roller (Roller-Drive-Assembly-Service, p/n 1060127357) must be replaced when replacing the Fuser Belt.

VIII. Product Technical Support Offerings

A. Dealer Support Requirements

VarioPrint 135/120/110 Series Technical Training is required to receivetechnical support for the VarioPrint 135/120/110 Series products. Refer to theCanon Technical Support Center (TSC) for further details.

In order to ensure that each Dealer receives the highest level of support andin turn resolves the end user’s problems quickly and accurately, here areseveral recommendations to maximize your technical support request.

The dealer support personnel should check technical documentation(Manuals, Tech. Pub’s, etc.) and the e-Support website (24 hours a day,7 days a week) before calling Canon USA’s Technical Support Center(TSC) since your concern may have already been addressed anddocumented.

Have your Support ID Number ready when you call the TSC and prepareto be at the location where the engine or application is accessible. Thisdramatically improves the TSC’s ability to help troubleshoot the problemand eliminate the guesswork when answering a specific question. Thereare many “causes” to various problems, but by being at the location whencalling, it takes the speculation out of the troubleshooting process bysupplying accurate answers to what the device/application is doing.

Provide the serial number of the installed engine or application you aretroubleshooting. While this is required for access to support, it will alsoprovide the Specialist with information about previous calls for support.

Be prepared to provide environment specific information and any othersite-specific variables.

Submit and update your profile information such as cell phone number, e-mail address, or company address. To do so, you can logon to e-Supportand access the “Current Profile” section to make updates or call CanonUSA’s TSC. Accurate profile information will allow for quick contact ifmore information is required from the caller later on.

At the completion of each call, a ticket number is provided. If the supportspecialist does not provide a number, the caller should ask for it.

A return call from a dealer technician/systems engineer with a resolutionis extremely helpful. The information Canon USA receives from you onwhat actually resolved the problem is sent to the Support Specialist andenables them to better assist other callers who may have the sameproblem just addressed.

Making certain that all of our support partners get the highest quality technicalsupport as fast as possible makes everyone more productive and ultimatelydelivers better results and customer satisfaction.

Following some of these basic guidelines, and working as a team, helpseveryone achieve their support goals.
