` Judaism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions
and was founded over 3500 years ago in the
Middle East.
` Jews believe that God appointed the Jews to be
his chosen people in order to set an example of
holiness and ethical behavior to the world.

` Judaism originated in the Middle East over 3500 years ago` Judaism was founded by Moses, although Jews trace their
history back to Abraham.` Jews believe that there is only one God with whom they have
a covenant.
` In exchange for all the good that God has done for the Jewishpeople,Jewish people keep Gods laws and try to bring holinessinto every aspect of their lives.
` Judaism has a rich history of religious text, but the central andmost important religious document is the Torah.
` Jewish traditional or oral law, the interpretation of the laws of the
Torah, is called halakhah.` Spiritual leaders are called Rabbis.` 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust in an attempt to

` This was the beginning ofJudaism as a structured
religion The Jews, under Gods guidance became
a powerful people with kings such as Saul, David,
and Solomon, who built the first great temple.
` From then on Jewish worship was focused on the
Temple, as it contained the Ark of the Covenant,

` The history of the Jewish people begins inBronze Age times in the Middle East whenGod promised a nomad leader calledAbram that he would be the father of agreat people if he did as God told him.
` Jews regard Abraham (as he was latercalled) as the first Patriarch of the Jewish
people.` Abraham was the first person to teach the
idea that there was only one God; beforethen, people believed in many gods.
` Ironically, Abraham's father, Terach, hadmade his living selling idols of various gods.

` The Holocaust was a tragic event in history.Approximately 11 million lives were lost because ofcruel racial prejudice. During the first half of the20th century, the Nazi party, led by Adolf Hitler, encouraged prejudice against Jews and other"undesirables" such as gypsies, homosexuals, thementally ill, or physically disabled; those not of the
"Aryan" race. The Nazis developed "The FinalSolution", a plan to get rid of all the Jews. Theydecided the most efficient way of doing this was toset up camps to exterminate their existence so theywould not pass on their genes and disrupt theNazis' quest for the perfect race. The Nazis also setup ghettos, where Jews would live in the mosthorrible conditions. Jewish children soon could not
go to schools with the other German children.Jewish businesses were forced to close,Jewishtemples were burned and vandalized. Though theNazis did not achieve their goal, they managed tokill 5-6 million Jews (and a further 5 million othervictims) in cruel, sadistic, inhumane acts andmurders.
