    Journeyyourstarts here

  • 2During the course of a year, I travel a substantial number of miles. Many of those miles are

experienced on Americas highways. There are always destinations and objectives involved,

but the joy is often found in the journey itself finding good restaurants, discovering

historical sites or reveling in the beauty of nature. Focusing on the destination can be

tiresome. On the other hand, seizing every opportunity along the way to learn, discover,

and simply enjoy the company of those traveling with me makes the journey an adventure.

Your college experience is an adventure; your destination is a college degree. But the

journey becomes demanding if the degree is all you seek. Determine to enjoy every facet

of college life. You will discover that four years pass all too quickly.

Reaping every possible benefit of your experience on Bison Hill requires you to engage

academically, spiritually and socially. Be fully absorbed in enriching your mind, deepening

your walk with Christ and learning to be a blessing to those around you. An Oklahoma

Baptist University education is a life-changing experience. You will be surrounded with

excellent academic programs, scholarly professors, and opportunities to serve locally and

globally. The rest is up to you.

    Join us on the journey,

    David W. WhitlockPresident

Learning is best in a community. OBU offers multiple avenues for students to engage with others as they pursue academic excellence.

Student Success at the Milburn Center The Student Success Center provides academic support for students of

all majors, classifications and academic needs. More than 40 students, who have already successfully navigated the core curriculum, are hired by faculty recommendation to serve their peers in multiple ways:

    One-on-one tutoring

    Group study sessions

    Writing Center

Development of study, research, analytical reading, writing and critical thinking skills

Academic Advising at the Milburn Center Academic Advising cultivates a one-on-one relationship between a student and faculty member.

This relationship facilitates the development of personal responsibility in decisions regarding career planning, exploration of fields of study and subsequent course selection.

Learning Communities at OBU A learning community is 17-20 freshmen taking several courses in common

during their first semester. These courses may revolve around a theme, or be connected to your major. This unique learning experience helps you transition to college by promoting engagement, involvement and success in learning.

How you study is just as important as what you study.

    #1 There are more OBU

graduates serving as active field missionaries within the International Mission Board

some He calls to serve in a ministry vocation.

The Herschel H. Hobbs COLLEGE OF THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY prepares students to learn the profound truths of

the Bible, to live out the Christian faith, to understand how to

    Gospel to the nations.

Ministry majors have ample opportunities to serve in local churches

and gain practical experience while pursuing their degree.

Opportunities are available to study in religion,

philosophy, Christian and cross-cultural ministry and

    biblical languages.

Graduates are equipped for continued study in a

graduate-level program and for careers on a local church

staff or on the mission field.

Is it the chapel services that define us? Is it the required

religion or Bible courses? Perhaps it is the multiple

opportunities for discipleship and ministry, or overseas mission trips. Do these define OBU as a Christian university?

None of the above makes OBU a Christian university. Religious programming can be void of life. However, a relationship

with Jesus Christ is life at its best. We are committed to

helping you know Christ and develop an ever-growing relationship with Him. Chapel,

Bible studies, mission trips, religion courses these are all tools to facilitate spiritual growth.

What does it mean to be a Christian university?

Living worthy of your calling is a journey: A journey toward becoming more like Jesus in words, thoughts and deeds, to impact your character

    and influence your culture.

    Spiritual formation is a journey.

    CONSIDER A

    Higher Purpose

  • 35

Life is best lived when it is not all about you.

When you think about a college degree, is the first question

that comes to mind, How much more money can I earn? Are

you most concerned with what makes your life comfortable? Is it

important how many Facebook friends you have? None of these

things are necessarily bad, but are they significant enough to get

you out of bed every morning? Consider a higher purpose.

Whether you are studying to be a teacher, doctor, missionary, researcher, nurse,

musician, journalist or a computer programmer, life is about more than a job. It is about a calling. Have you considered that God, as your Creator, has endowed you with certain abilities and skills that are most productive and gratifying when you follow His direction for your life?

Think about it. Is it all about you?

Regardless of your vocation, make it about Him and what He can do. With God, you impact the lives of others where you work, where you live,

where you worship and where you play.

    OBUTraditions

The BisonOBUs mascot a symbol of strength, life and provision. Before OBU was

established, Bison Hill was well-known bison territory. Bison

provided food and clothing to the Native Americans. OBU

chose the bison as the Universitys mascot, in hopes that its

graduates would also help meet the worlds needs.

The WalkThe Walk represents a students journey at OBU. Conducted

the night before your first day of classes, and the day you

graduate, it begins at the Oval and ends at Raley Chapel.

Green & GoldIn the early days, coreopsis wildflowers provided a sea of green and gold on Bison

Hill when they bloomed in the spring. Thus, green and gold were adopted as the

    official school colors.
