The Model EDC IV Detector Check Valves (Ref. Figure A) are resilient rub- ber seat, spring loaded swing check Valves designed for installation in com- mercial fire lines to detect downstream leakage and unauthorized use of water which is intended for fire protection system service. The EDC IV Valves are designed for either horizontal or vertical (flow up) installation and they are available with inlet and outlet con- nections per Figure A.

The EDC IV, when equipped with an external metered bypass, diverts a small percentage of water flow through the bypass by virtue of the spring loaded clapper sealing the main water- way. With the clapper closed, low rates of flow are registered through the by- pass meter. The clapper remains closed and all water passes through the meter until the pressure loss through the bypass exceeds approxi- mately 2 psi (0,14 bar), at which point

the clapper opens to allow flow through the main waterway, as would be the case in the event of a fire.

Provision is made for installation of an optional bypass trim with a water meter having the size and units of measure- ment appropriate for the application. When the bypass trim or the bypass trim and meter are ordered, the EDC IV is shipped with the bypass assem- bled to the EDC IV. The bypass meter will register flows up to the rated capa- bility of the selected unit. Flow through the main waterway is not registered. Both the mainline check valve and the optional bypass check valve shut off flow in the reverse direction.

The spring mechanism of the EDC IV provides for low headloss during full flow conditions. All of the operating parts of the spring and clapper mech- anism are attached to the cover for easy removal and maintenance. For safety and by virtue of a novel spring mechanism design, full spring tension is applied only when the cover is com-

pletely bolted to the body. The spring tension is automatically and fully re- lieved as the cover bolts are loosened.

The 3 through 10 inch (80 through 250 mm) Model EDC IV Detector Check Valves are listed by Underwriters Lab- oratories Inc. and Underwriters’ Labo- ratories of Canada. They are also ap- proved by Factory Mutual Research Corporation. The listings and approv- als apply to both the red enamel exte- rior finish, as well as the internal/exter- nal epoxy coating.

O-ring used to seal the Cover is EPDM. The Cover Bolts are steel per ASTM A307 (Grade A), the Eye Bolt is forged steel with a zinc chromate fin- ish, the Vent Screw is Type 304 or 316 stainless steel, and the Vent Screw Seal is nylon.

The Spring Mechanism is fabricated of austenitic stainless springs, links, and pins. Spacers used for the Spring Mechanism are copper per ASTM 8302. The Spring Mechanism is bolted to the Cover with Type 18-8 stainless steel fasteners.

The EPDM encapsulated Clapper is steel per ASTM A569 for the 3 and 4 inch (80 and 100 mm) size Valves, steel per ASTM A285 for the 6 inch (150 mm) size Valves, and ductile iron per ASTM A536 for the 8 and 10 inch (200 and 250 mm) size Valves. The

Clapper has a Type 303 stainless steel threaded stud, as part of its subassem- bly. The Clapper Washer and Clapper Nut are Type 18-8 stainless steel.

The Model EDC IV Detector Check Valve is to be installed as follows:

1. The EDC IV may be installed hori- zontally or vertically (flow up). When installed in the horizontal position, the handhole cover should face up for ease of maintenance.

2. The flow arrow cast on the Cover, as well as on the Body, must be in the direction of water flow.

-4-

3. Bypass arrangements and devices must conform to local water author- ity requirements.

4. Metered by-pass arrangements must be installed with the same di- rection of flow as the EDC IV.

5. After the installation is complete and the system has been pressurized with water, trapped air should be relieved from the under side of the Cover by loosening the Vent Screw (7 - Fig. D) approximately five turns. Do not remove the Screw from the Cover. Retighten the Vent Screw after water appears, indicating that all of the trapped air has been re- leased.

The Model EDC IV Detector Check Valve does not require any regularly scheduled maintenance; however, it is recommended that water be flowed through the main waterway at least annually to ensure that all internal parts move freely. If there are indica- tions that the Clapper is not moving freely, as evidenced by a partial water flow, or the EDC IV appears not to be shutting off reverse flow, then the EDC IV must be serviced.

It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected quar- terly by a qualified Inspection Service.

NOTE Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection systems which it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys- tems must first be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this decision musy be notified.

Service Procedure

1. Close the main control valve.

2. Prior to removing any Cover Bolts, the water pressure must be relieved and consideration should be given to the need for draining of the inlet and outlet piping. Verify that the drainage water is being properly disposed of and that it is not damaging property or constituting a hazardous condi- tion.

3. Remove the Cover Bolts as follows:

a. First, remove the Cover Bolt(s) located closest to the inlet end of the valve [i.e., one Bolt for the 3 and 4 inch (80 and 100 mm) valves and two Bolts for the 6,8, and 10 inch (150,200, and 250

mm) valves]. Then, partially re- engage the removed Bolt(s) by two to three turns.

b. Slowly loosen and remove the remaining Cover Bolts. As the Cover Bolts are loosened and removed, the tension in the Spring Mechanism will be auto- matically relieved. The partially engaged Cover Bolt(s) located closest to the inlet end of the valve will prevent any lateral movement of the Cover as the other Bolts are removed.

c. Completely remove the Cover Bolt(s) located closest to the inlet end of the valve.

4. Lift the Cover & Clapper Mechanism Assembly clear of the Body.

5. Clean all interior parts and then in- spect for wear, damage, and free- dom of movement. Worn or dam- aged parts must be replaced. The Seat Ring is not replaceable. The Clapper can be replaced while the Spring Mechanism is assembled to the Cover.

When replacing a Clapper, be sure to securely re-tighten the Clapper Nut and Washer, which secures the Clapper to the Spring Mechanism. Likewise, when replacing a Spring Mechanism, be sure to securely tighten the Bolts holding the Spring Mechanism to the Cover.

6. Tighten (turning clockwise), as nec- essary, the Pre-tension Hex Bolt shown in Figure D for the 6 through 10 inch (150 through 250 mm) size valves. Normally, tightening of the Pre-tension Hex Bolt is only neces- sary when replacing the Spring Mechanism. The Pre-tension Hex Bolt is tightened until the spacer around the Bolt bottoms out against the blocks on both ends. Tightening of the Pre-tension Hex Bolt eases reassembling of the Cover & Clap- per Mechanism Assembly.

7. Replace the Cover & Clapper Mech- anism Assembly into the Body and replace the Cover Bolts as follows:

a. While holding the Cover down against the Body, hand tighten the Cover Bolt(s) located closest to the inlet end of the valve to help guide the Clapper into place [i.e., one Bolt for the 3 and 4 inch (80 and 100 mm) valves and two Bolts for the 6, 8, and 10 inch (150,200, and 250 mm) valves].

b. Replace the remaining Cover Bolts and hand tighten.

c. After all of the Cover Bolts are in place, cross-tighten the Cover
