Who We Are

Observatory Driving Range & Pro Shop was

founded by William “Bobby” Jones in 1999. It is

now owned, operated and managed by his

daughter’s, Genevieve Jones- Jackson and Janice

Jones making it the first and only black female

owned Driving Range in Southern Africa.

Observatory Driving Range is a top class golf

practicing facility that was officially opened by

Former Golf Professional Gary Player, a friend

and colleague of Mr Jones. Located in

Observatory, Johannesburg; 21 minutes from OR

Tambo, 15 minutes from central Johannesburg &

26 minutes from Sandton CBD makes it easily

accessible and perfectly situated.

The Driving Range has also been designed to

ensure that you, the golfer, have the optimal

conditions and facilities in which to perfect your

game of golf, with manicured putting greens,

chipping greens, 80 grassed hitting bays and a

highly qualified team of PGA Golf Professionals

to assist you by offering private golf lessons and

golf tuition if needed.

We are the only Driving Range that exclusively

has grass tee boxes. This feature has made the

range very popular particularly for the transition

of teeing from the range to teeing on a golf

course.

OBS GO – THE BUSINESS OF GOLF

OBS GO – Golf Orientation and Team Building Clinics accommodates both novice and regular

golfers. The strong team-building aspect draws together the fundamentals that are key in both business and golf, thus we title this program “The Business of Golf”.

GOLF ORIENTATION We are completely open to designing custom programs ; if you have a group that wants a specific time, wants to work on only certain aspects of the game or want a long term learning experience we will gladly help you build a program to fit your needs and wants.

The OBS GO class is designed to introduce brand new golfers to the culture, skills and fun of golf 4 weeks

prior to a golf day. Golf can be an intimidating sport so the goals of this program are to introduce new

golfers to the facility, etiquette, rules, how to book starting times, how to play golf, how to select the

right golf equipment, as well as instruction on simple, basic fundamentals.

Time: 45 - 60 minute sessions (3 hours of total instruction)

- 1 dedicated for swing coaching

- 1 dedicated for chipping coaching

- 1 dedicated for putting coaching

A group of up to 18 golfers are split into 3 groups of 6 (or 3 equal groups). Each group would be assigned

to one of the above aspects (swing, chipping, putting) for a personalised group coaching session after

which they will move onto the next aspect.

Short refreshment breaks between each aspect creates a great opportunity to network, socialise and

boast about their newfound talent!

After experiencing coaching in each 3 aspects, we have a golfer born and ready to test their swing at the

Observatory Driving Range.

The following aspects are included in the clinics:

Golf Swing:

All of the basics including the grip, stance, posture, alignment, weight transfer and balance are covered in this aspect of the clinic. The golf swing is presented in a displayed and descriptive

presentation before the participants advance to perform the presented material themselves. This aspect is facilitated on the driving range and each participant receives personal instruction

as well as participating in a group clinic, which lends to collective group involvement. With each participant having varying shortfalls and demands, we will attend to each person with a few minutes of basic instruction that will assist them with their swing going forward. Chipping: This aspect is facilitated at the club’s chipping green area and contains the basics that will ensure that a participant leaves with the basics skills to chip confidently and understand the technical basics of this vital part of the game. Once again, participants will be coached in a group, with each participant then receiving personal coaching based on their personal requirements and ability. Putting:

Putting is the most utilised aspect of the game and is the easiest aspect to be able to teach and understand. With that, each participant will receive the basic essentials to develop an understanding regarding putting. The Trick Shot Show

OBS GO teambuilding’s culminate in one of Michael Scholz’ trick shot shows. The intention is to

display what can be done if one hones one’s skills in the game of golf as well as to provide some comedic entertainment after an afternoon of golfing.

The Trick Shot Show is a high impact show best hosted after the golfers have completed their

golf and the shows include a line-up hosted by a number of characters, impersonations, trick shots and golfing anecdotes.

Golf Wellness.

With growing focus on employee health, corporate wellness programs are increasingly becoming an

As a form of corporate entertainment, golf's first virtue is that people of any age can play it. Tennis can be fun, but if the 65-year-old boss of the company you are trying to sell widgets to dies of a heart attack running for your power serve, it probably won't help your business. Boxing is even worse.

The sport's second strength is that, thanks to the handicap system, people of widely differing abilities can compete against each other. This makes the game more fun.

Golf's third asset is that you only spend a small portion of a four-hour game actually hitting the ball, so there is plenty of time to talk shop. This is not true of, say, hoping through an obstacle course wheezing at your partner who’s drowning in mud.
