A little less than 2 1/2 years ago, we launched the "quiet" phase of our Brendan T. Byrne Fund for the Pinelands Campaign. Since then, we have taken our message on the road. I have enjoyed meeting many new friends and getting to know long-time friends of the Pinelands

better. I am moved by the support we have received from so many people throughout New Jersey and the Delaware Valley.

We have now reached 80 percent of our $4 million campaign goal! This puts us in a strong position to take our campaign "public" this spring to our general membership and the broader public. We hope to close out the campaign by yearend.

For the upcoming "public" phase of the campaign, we're putting together a short film, titled The Man Who Preserved the Pines, honoring Governor Byrne and his legacy. Former governors Byrne, Florio, Kean and Whitman have all contributed to the making of this beautiful and inspiring film. We will release the film as part of the launch of the public phase of the campaign.

The Byrne Fund is already being put to work for the Pinelands. Our new Pinelands Adventures had a wonderfully successful startup season in 2015 and is poised to help thousands of people of all ages and abilities experience the Pinelands this year. Our new Outreach Director and his volunteer team have been actively partnering with the officials and citizens of Hammonton to reduce water consumption from the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer. We will shortly issue Requests for Proposals to contractors to renovate the historic barn at PPA’s headquarters, so it can serve as a unique event, exhibition and education center. Stay tuned for more!

Thank you so much for making all of this possible!

Robert & Joan Campbell Challenge GiftAs our campaign heads down the home stretch, we are excited to announce a challenge gift from Robert and Joan Campbell. The Campbells have pledged to match, dollar-for-dollar, all Brendan T. Byrne Fund Campaign donations up to a total of $250,000 over the next 12 months.

As lifelong residents of New Jersey, Bob and Joan have many deep connections to our region. After a distinguished 40 year career with Johnson & Johnson, Bob retired as Vice Chairman of the Board in 1995. Since retiring, Bob has served on a number of boards, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Fordham University, and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Bob and Joan recalled growing up in the '30s and '40s when there was plenty of open space to enjoy. "Our interest in conservation comes from witnessing the steady 'paving over' of open land and farms. We realize that economic development pressures are driven by population growth. There are always trade-offs with nature, but we have to strive to keep things in balance as best we can."

"Our choice to support the Pinelands Preservation Alliance comes from the belief in the magnitude of the opportunity to hold the line and retain that nature/progress balance that is so important. As is often said, 'You don’t appreciate what you have until you don’t have it anymore.' It is imperative that we don’t wait to fully appreciate the Pinelands until it disappears."

The Campbell's challenge gift puts us in a great position to reach our $4 million campaign goal by yearend!

Campaign Status ReportThe "quiet phase" of our campaign continues to go well. After launching our campaign in October 2013, we are now closing in on our $4 million campaign goal, having raised almost $3.3 million to date!

Since our last report, we have received gifts from over 70 additional donors, including a $250,000 gift from an Anonymous donor, and grants from The John Ben Snow Memorial Trust, Hyde & Watson Foundation and E. J. Grassmann Trust, all directed to the barn renovation. We are also very honored to have received a $250,000 Challenge Gift Pledge from Robert and Joan Campbell (see page 2).

We plan to launch the "public" phase of our campaign by early May, and will be reaching out to our general membership and the public with our Robert and Joan Campbell Challenge.

We hope to reach our $4 million goal by yearend!

$4M Goal

A key objective of PPA and the Byrne Fund Campaign is to greatly expand the Pinelands Community of Support. Pinelands Adventures, launched in May 2015, gives our guests a variety of unique opportunities to experience the Pinelands first hand with friends and family.

Our inaugural season was a resounding success and a rewarding experience! To run the initiative we built an all-star team of passionate Pine Barrens enthusiasts who are eager to share their knowledge and love of the forest with our guests and assure that they had a positive experience, from the moment they arrived until the last car left the lot. More than 3,500 people utilized our services this season, paddling on the lakes and rivers of Wharton State Forest. People enjoyed guided and unguided paddling trips on the Batsto and Mullica Rivers, guided visits to a local cranberry farm, and a variety of history and nature-themed tours.

Here’s what our customers had to say:

Pinelands Adventures has robust plans for the 2016 season. Our goals include expanding our educational programs, increasing outreach to schools and community groups, enhancing our trip options, and extending our hours so we can be open every day to better serve all those who want to explore the Pinelands. The entire Pinelands Adventures Team is excited about the upcoming season! We hope you’ll join us on an upcoming adventure.

The renovation will respect, preserve and take advantage of the original fabric and look of the barn. No original structural elements will be removed, and elements like the ceiling (the floor of the hay loft), the siding, and the structural support posts and beams will all be preserved and visible. The public space will have lighting and hanging systems that make it suitable for displays of interpretive materials about the Pinelands and PPA, photography and painting; audio-visual equipment for showing presentations and video; basic scientific equipment for ecology and botany classes and teacher training programs; and open seating for presentations and lectures.

We have been working with the New Jersey Barn Company, leaders in barn restorations and renovations in our region. The Phase I blueprints have been completed and we have put out a RFP to potential contractors. The estimated cost for Phase 1 is $286,050 and we have raised $152,000 in committed grants to date. We anticipate beginning the renovation in the latter half of 2015. We hope to be in a position to invite you to a ribbon cutting this fall! Stay tuned.

REP

ORT

Thanks to the commitment of so many people, the Brendan T. Byrne Fund for the Pinelands campaign is moving even faster than I hoped and is already having a big impact on our ability to protect the Pinelands.  Here are the key accomplishments:

• We raised over $2.7 million after only 17 months.

• We have met many new friends of New Jersey and its natural resources.  Among these new friends is Betty Wold Johnson, who made a generous leadership gift in December.

• We purchased the canoe livery property and equipment which forms the heart of the new Pinelands Adventures initiative, and we hired Rob Ferber to manage the project.  Rob is getting ready to open Pinelands Adventures for business on May 2nd.

• We have selected drawings for the renovation of the barn at the Bishop Farmstead and have issued a preliminary RFP to potential contractors.  We hope to be inviting you to the ribbon cutting this fall.

• The Byrne Fund is already beginning to support new conservation work by helping to fund the Outreach Director position created last fall when we hired Geoff Richter for this position.  Geoff is now focusing on water conservation in partnership with the town of Hammonton, which relies entirely on the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer.

Thank you so much for making all of this possible!

Pinelands AdventuresWe are excited to announce the purchase of the equipment and property of the former Adams Canoe Rental business, and the creation of Pinelands Adventures this last January. Pinelands Adventures, conveniently located across from the Atsion Recreation Area in Wharton State Forest, will open on May 2 as an outdoor recreation center, canoe/kayak rental and livery service and outdoor education program to expand the community of people who know and love the Pinelands.

We welcome Rob Ferber as our new Director of Pinelands Adventures. Rob came to us from Linvilla Orchards in Media, PA. For over 20 years, Rob helped to successfully grow and develop their business operations including planning and logistics for school tours, classes, special events and festivals which drew over 500,000 annual visitors. Prior to his time at Linvilla, Rob ran boating, fishing, nature and adventure programs at Echo Hill Camp and Outdoor School on the Eastern Shore of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.

Rob and our team have hit the ground running. We are working to prepare the facility and equipment to meet our high standards and provide safe and fun Pine Barrens experiences for all. We’ll be ready for our grand opening ceremony on Wednesday, April 29th and for the public opening on Saturday, May 2nd.

This season, we will focus on getting our unguided canoe and kayak livery services up and running smoothly. Later in the year, we’ll begin offering a variety of guided paddles, hikes and tours. Pinelands Adventures will enable us to reach thousands of individuals, families, schools and community groups, leaving each person with a deeper understanding and lasting appreciation of this very special place.

Campaign Status Report

Our campaign has surpassed our $4 million halfway goal! Since our last report in October 2014, we’ve raised an additional $898,580, which puts us over $2.7 million. We have received gifts from more than 90 donors ranging from $100 to $500,000, including a generous leadership gift from Betty Wold Johnson, and grants from the Hyde & Watson Foundation (Barn renovation), Victoria Foundation (Barn renovation) Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation (Pinelands Adventures), Holman Automotive Group (Pinelands Adventures) and PSEG Foundation (Pinelands Adventures).

We will begin taking our campaign public over the next several months as we make a big push to raise the balance of our campaign goal by year-end. Our first public announcement will be made at our Pinelands Adventures Grand Opening Ceremony on April 29th.

“I think it is essential that we preserve the 1.1 million acre Pinelands National Reserve and its 17 trillion gallon Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance has demonstrated their leadership in successfully protecting this vital resource for the past 25 years. I hope others will join me in helping the Alliance fulfill its vital mission.”

— BETTY WOLD JOHNSON

Betty Wold Johnson Leadership GiftWe are honored to have received a very generous leadership gift from philanthropist Betty Wold Johnson. Betty has deep roots in New Jersey and has been a leader in supporting many conservation causes over the years.

Betty is passionate about protecting our watersheds and natural areas for future generations.

Former Governor Thomas Kean and Betty Wold Johnson

Historic 1932 Louden Barn RenovationIf you’ve had a chance to visit our Bishop Farmstead headquarters, you have seen the Farmstead’s magnificent barn with its towering hayloft. The barn is a historic building and a contributing structure in the Farmstead’s inclusion in the state and national registers of historic places. Manufactured as a kit in Iowa by the Louden Machinery Company, it was shipped by rail to New Jersey, and then assembled on the Farmstead in 1932.

A key initiative of our Brendan T. Byrne Fund for the Pinelands campaign is to restore this historic barn in two phases. Phase I will renovate the 3,000 square foot ground floor to create a multi-purpose public space (2,300 ft2), plus additional work and office areas (700 ft2). At a later stage, we will evaluate a Phase II renovation that would include the addition of kitchen and other facilities to make the hay loft into a full-service event space capable of accommodating both PPA and catered events.

PRESERVING, PROMOTING AND ADVANCING THE FUTURE OF OUR NEW JERSEY PINELANDS

PinelandswelcomeWelcome to the inaugural edition of our Brendan T. Byrne Campaign Newsletter. This is a transformational campaign for us and our campaign goal is to raise at least $4 million. We kicked off the “quiet phase” of our campaign last October 2013 and we are finding that our campaign is being enthusiastically received thus far. We want to keep you updated on our progress and to share this exciting journey with you. Thank you for your support, which is so essential in building a solid foundation for successfully achieving our goal!

—CARLETON MONTGOMERY, Executive Director

From Our Campaign ChairIt is a great pleasure and an honor to chair the Brendan T. Byrne Fund for the Pinelands campaign, because it offers me a chance to work for the protection of the Pinelands and to honor my father’s leadership in passing the Pinelands Protection Act of 1979. Governor Byrne has always said that the Pinelands Protection Act is the achievement of which he is most proud in his years of public service.

Along with the rest of us, he depends on the Pinelands Preservation Alliance to carry on the very difficult task of making sure the Pinelands will always be here for people and for the unique wildlife and plant communities that find refuge in the Pinelands. If you are already supporting the Byrne Fund, thank you! And if you are still considering how you want to support this effort, I hope you will agree with me that this is a very special and very worthy cause.

Our Governors Circle Bipartisan support

New Jersey’s most eminent statespersons see the Pinelands Preservation Alliance as the essential organization leading the effort to save the Pinelands. We are honored to announce that former New Jersey Governors Brendan Byrne, Thomas Kean, James Florio, and Christine Whitman are formally supporting our campaign.

GOVERNOR BYRNE is the “father of the Pinelands,” having achieved passage of the Pinelands Protection Act in 1979 with wide bipartisan support.

GOVERNOR KEAN built on Governor Byrne’s legacy by defending the Pinelands Act from concerted efforts to overturn the program in its early years.

GOVERNOR FLORIO introduced and championed the federal Pinelands legislation in 1978, defended the Pinelands as governor and served as Chair of the Pinelands Commission.

GOVERNOR WHITMAN championed the expansion of Green Acres funding that helped protect hundreds of thousands of acres in the Pinelands, more than anywhere else in the state.

All four continue to use their stature and influence to advance the Pinelands cause.

“My proudest accomplishment in public life is the passage of the Pinelands Protection Act and saving the Pine Barrens against all odds. I see the Pinelands Preservation Alliance as the guardian of that achievement. I want to know the Alliance will always be here for me and everyone who cares about the Pinelands.”

— HON. BRENDAN T. BYRNE

“In my long experience of working in and with government, I have seen how vital it is to have a robust watchdog organization like the Alliance to inform the public, help citizens become actively involved, and present independent perspectives on the actions of politicians and government agencies charged with implementing programs like the Pinelands Act and Comprehensive Management Plan. The Alliance has been serving this role for twenty-four years. This work is getting harder with time, not easier. The Brendan T. Byrne Fund will enable the Alliance to maintain its work through good and bad times and, most important, to expand its programs to face new challenges the Pinelands is certain to face as New Jersey continues to grow.”

PPA’s “Pinelands Adventures” Reaching the Public with the Pinelands Story

“You won’t protect what you don’t love, and you won’t love what you don’t know.”

The Pinelands is one of Earth’s great natural treasures. Its story is a compelling tale of natural history, people power, and politics done right. Today too few people know that story and too few know how they can become effective voices for the Pinelands.

There is a growing disconnect between the younger generation and nature. A generation ago, kids would hop on their bikes and spend the day exploring and playing in the great outdoors. Many developed a lasting appreciation of nature that they carried with them through their adult lives. For many people today, opportunities to connect with nature have been displaced by the internet, social networking, video games and organized sports.

PPA needs to address this challenge to meet our strategic goal of Building the Pinelands Community of Support & Expanding Education Programs. Only an active public that demands the Pinelands be saved will ensure our public agencies and officials do right by the Pinelands, year after year, and in the face of pressure to weaken or waive environmental protections.

A core initiative of the Byrne Fund is to significantly raise the level of public knowledge and engagement by creating our “Pinelands Adventures” outreach and education program. We will establish a canoe/kayak livery operation to serve as

Donations Status Report

We have raised over $1,840,000 through the first twelve months of our campaign. We are making a big push to reach our halfway goal of $2 million by year-end. If successful, we’ll be on track to take our campaign public in early 2015. We have received 20 gifts from our lead and major donors ranging from $10,000 to $500,000. This includes major grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, William Penn Foundation and the 1772 Foundation to support our strategic acquisition of a canoe/kayak livery operation and creation of the ‘Pinelands Adventures’ outreach and education initiative.

“I can’t thank you enough for yesterday. What a terrific trip on the Batsto River. The take away for me is the Pine Barrens is a unique gem that needs to be preserved.”

the foundation for a comprehensive program of nature, recreation and education experiences for individuals, families, schools and community groups.

We completed our feasibility study and we believe that

• Pinelands Adventures will increase active recreation in the Pinelands by bringing new people into the region and providing them with memorable nature experiences. We anticipate helping at least 10,000 people explore the Pinelands in the third year of operation.

• Visitors using Pinelands Adventures will become more informed about the Pinelands, its water and other natural resources, the challenges in conserving these resources, and ways they can help save the Pinelands.

• The income from the paying public will provide the organizational capacity – the human and material resources – to create new programs specifically directed to communities of color, city residents and underprivileged students who do not often come into the Pinelands or enjoy the experiences we can offer.

• PPA will be a stronger and better-known representative of the Pinelands by bringing more people into contact with the organization, increasing our membership and supporting new outreach programs that will increase public awareness of PPA and the Pinelands.

This year, we have offered several guided Batsto River tours to give our guests a preview of our “Pinelands Adventures” opportunity. These trips have been universally well received, which makes us even more confident that this will be a keystone of our future outreach and education program. Stay tuned for our 2015 Pinelands Adventures trip schedule. We hope you will be able to join us on one of these outings.
