➊ Let your child have fun while

they practice cutting random shapes out of the fun colored paper. Young children need lots of practice with scissors and this is an excellent exercise to get them ready for school. Take the bits and pieces they cut, mix them up and then have them sort groups by color.

Preschool Lesson Plan(ages 3-6)

Elementary Lesson Plan (ages 6-12)

Objectives: fine motor development, shape/color recognition, developing/extending patterns

Objectives: Define what food groups are and be able to categorize different types of foods.

In this art lesson, we will create paper food collages and learn about Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Who says pizza can’t be healthy? The USDA organizes our foods into 5 groups. Here are some common pizza toppings in the groups they belong to. And, yes, fruit can be tasty on pizza!

Hi there! This interactive art lesson was written for you and your child to enjoy at the kitchen table. I’ve also created additional resources for you at my website www.kellykits.com. Just log in to your member account to check it out!

Depending on the age and skill level of your child, you may need to assist with certain steps in this project. I encourage your involvement and

collaboration! Assist when needed and take a step back when your child is creating, even if it’s not “perfect”. Remember that the process of creating art is more valuable than the actual art produced!

Have a blast! - Kelly

Papercutting is an important skill to add to your toolbox of art processes. In this lesson, challenge yourself to cut shapes freely without pencil drawn lines to follow. Here are instructions to make a paper pizza.

Materials

Assorted heavyweight construction paper

scissors

glue stick or paste (works best with construction paper)

GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO (1526 -1593) was an Italian Renaissance painter known for his unusual portrait paintings.

His paintings were similar to collages in that he assembled common objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, and fish onto his canvas to create the faces of characters. During Arcimboldo’s time, his paintings were considered to be amusing and odd, kind of like jokes! He made a series of “reversible” paintings that could be viewed upside down as well as right side up!

➊ First, cut a large round shape from light brown paper. Trace a plate for best results!

➋ Use red-orange paper and tear pieces by hand. Glue down these pieces to create a

layer of “sauce” on the round shape.

➌ Now, using your imagination, cut the rest of your pizza toppings your ingredients out of

the brightly colored papers. Sort into piles. *Helpful Hint: fold paper a couple of times and cut through multiple sheets to reduce cutting time.

Here are some ideas!

➍ Once you have organized your “ingredients”, compose your pizza masterpiece by gluing on

one layer of ingredients at a time. Allow your collage to dry thoroughly and do not eat!

Create a face out of your ingredients like Arcimboldo did in his painting Vertumnus!

How many different foods can you identify in this painting?

What seems new? Is there something here you’ve never seen before?

Tell a story about this character. Who is he?

What would you name this painting if it were yours?

What is the best part of this painting?
