The UN in Darfur - FEEDBACK NEGOTIATIONS

In 2004 the UN secretary general met

with the Sudanese government - following the talks there was a

joint agreement to stop the conflict.

Since then various peace deals have been signed and then broken

between the fighting groups.

The UN continue to be successful in getting

both sides to the negotiating table.

PEACEKEEPING FORCES

After UN negotiations (and the threat of sanctions)

with the Sudanese government, a small peacekeeping force

(approx 300 troops) was allowed into Darfur in

August 2004

In 2009 15000 were in place.

They have had some success in protecting

civilians although they themselves have come under attack from both

sides on several occasions.

THREAT OF SANCTIONS

On several occasions the UN has threatened sanctions (in particular to prevent Sudan

trading oil)

This has proved effective in winning several concessions

from the Sudanese government.
