Turnbow’s Supermarket – James and Pat Turnbow
This mural was sponsored by the Children and Grandchildren of James and Pat Turnbow
H. Paul Clack built a 1650 square foot building and opened a grocery store in January 1960. James Turnbow and Paul Gray Clack (Paul’s son) operated the business. Paul Gray died in 1962. James Turnbow and his wife Pat bought the business from Paul Clack. On April 1, 1980, James and Pat bought the property and two buildings from Paul and Leila Clack. By 1983 the grocery building had doubled in size plus an additional structure was added for storage.
James and Pat formed Turnbow’s Boat Service. They delivered supplies to the towboats going up and down the river. At it’s peak, Turnbow’s supermarket employed as many as 10 employees including their three children who worked alongside their parents.
They always accredited their success in the grocery business to their many friends and faithful customers of Hickman.
The Turnbow’s operated this mom and pop business for almost three decades. They closed the business in 1988.
Editor’s Note: This is one of the murals in the second phase of the Hickman Chamber of Commerce seawall mural project.
