obh mail News from the Middle School It has been a cold and windy week. We have all wrapped up warm and the Middle School parachute has had many outings at play-time. It is wonderful to see the children playing and integrating so happily together during their free time.

This Week in Year 3 In the classroom, Year 3 are enjoying the topic of Ancient Egypt in History lessons. We are looking forward to our trip on the 21st February to the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge where we will be looking at many Egyptian artefacts. Parents are asked to send pupils in to school wearing Sunday Best. More details to follow. We are going to be designing and building our own pyramids out of Lego. Although we have a large box of Lego at school, it would be helpful if each child could bring in a range of simple coloured bricks and a Lego base stored in a named Tupperware container. Our class reader is ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl. The children have written some super character descriptions of the grumpy farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Please come and have a look at our display in the Year 3 classrooms.

As you will see from the calendar, there is an opportunity to discuss your children’s CAT tests and academic progress with your child’s form teacher after half term. Year 4 parent meetings will be taking place on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th March whilst Year 3 parent meetings will take place the following week on Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th March.

World Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March when we will be encouraging all children and teachers to dress up as their favourite book character.

Throughout the week we will also be carrying out World Book day literacy activities . Dr Marshall and Year 8 will be visiting our English classes next week and will be reading aloud their well-chosen extracts from a reading book that they have enjoyed. It would be appreciated if you could guide your child when choosing their own extract and the Year 3 and 4 children will be reading these aloud later in the term. The extract need not be very long and does not need to be learnt from memory.

obh mail This week in Year 4

This week, Year 4 have continued to explore the science behind sound. To start the week we used the iPads to measure the volume of different sounds at various locations around the school and by the end of the week, we were looking at different musical instruments to see how sounds are made and changed.

We are hoping to investigate further this topic as we continue into term and so have asked the Year 4 children to bring in a small plastic tub, shoe box, cereal pack or other similar sized container as a starting point for making some musical instruments of their own! 4GG have enjoyed taste testing different types of bread in preparation for their own baking next week. They were very good at choosing exciting adjectives to describe the differences between the different types they had available. On the theme of food, Oliver very kindly shared a very gooey chocolate cake with Year 4 as he celebrated his birthday. It was delicious! Our class reader this term is Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘Why the Whales Came’ and Year 4 continue to impress with their reading confidence. The children are working hard to share this story, reading sections aloud to their class and deepening their understanding of the text as a whole. Enjoy your weekend! obh mail Year 7 – Field study at Easton Farm Park

This was yet another excellent trip to Easton Farm Park. The weather was glorious and the pupils were able to gather a huge range of data associated with the factors affecting farming in an MEDC. The information obtained will now be analysed and then presented in various forms. One of which, will be a detailed land use map of the farm. This incor-porates some excellent cross

curricular work involving complex ICT skills. The pupils will also use the information to compile a specific case study on economic activity – one of the requirements of the Common Entrance syllabus.

Last Friday the music scholars gave beautiful renditions of their prepared pieces for their scholarships to their intended senior schools. Pupils were kindly accompanied by Margaret Nunn. Jamie Dilnot: Ipswich School Maisy Webster: Woodbridge Freddie Garfoot: Uppingham Oscar Brown: Oundle Unfortunately, Oscar had to dash off after the concert before the photo call….!

obh mail Boarding News….. This week we have been busy in activities, enjoying manhunt with Mr Drake, making dinosaurs with Mrs Gillott and corner hockey with Mr Swiney, to name just a few. Over the past fortnight Wenyeve/Warner and Knyvett collected the most green tags for their respective dormitories and enjoyed a special break time treat of a fabulous chocolate cake. Individual prizes, for collecting the most green tags were given out on Monday’s assembly to Anlan Wang, George Roberts and William Roberts. This means they have been the most helpful and the best at doing all their evening chores. Well done, to all. At the end of last term Avice and Garrett won the Christmas Dormitory decorating competition and on Friday they enjoyed a special party table tea for all their amazing interior design efforts.

This weekend promises to be a good one, with a Chinese Banquet on Saturday night and a trip to the Congo Rapids on Sunday afternoon. Please make sure your child has a warm coat in school for weekend trips. We are also off-site on Sun-day afternoon between 1.30 and 5.30pm but can be contacted on the school mobile in an emergency.: 07917 333740

Elle turned 12 on Tuesday and had a birthday tea in the drawing room. She was treated to lots of yummy party food and her mum and dad had provided lots of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and cupcakes which went down a storm! Happy birthday Elle.

obh mail Pre-Prep & Nursery

A peek at our week We have had a rather chilly, but incredibly busy week in the Pre-Prep. Firstly, well done to those children (and parents!) who have sent in hat, gloves and scarf – I have been liberally handing out stickers to all the children who are wrapped up against the cold.

Nursery have been celebrating Chinese New Year ahead of this weekend, with the children tracing their name in Chinese and creating lovely Chinese New Year cards. This week in Reception, the children have been busy learning facts about the planets and collaged the planets using a variety of media for our solar system display. Year 1 have done some imaginative writing based on their materials work in science and Year 2 have been continuing their work on famous artists in ICT and art – creating brilliant self-portraits in the style of Picasso!

#OBHPP You may have noticed a few more Pre-Prep posts on the OBH Facebook page recently. The PP staff and I have been really enjoying putting these posts together – making photo collages, photo-shopping images together and learning how to create GIFs!

This morning the whole of Pre-Prep were involved in the rehearsal for a new single shot promo video. The children loved every minute of being on ‘set’ and we made it a real learning occasion. We looked at the storyboard for the film, talked about the different people involved in making a film, actors and behind the scenes. When shooting on Monday, I plan to use all the correct language – ‘Take 1’ and ‘CUT!’ Do keep an eye out for the finished cut coming to screens near you soon.......

Lackford Lakes We are all really looking forward to our trip to Lackford Lakes on the 9th February.

The Forest Schools team have an exciting day planned for the children with a variety of different activities. As many of you have already, I would be grateful if you could email your child’s class teacher, or myself, to give permission for them to attend.

Many thanks and have a lovely weekend,

Camilla Webster

We are very much looking forward to welcoming Bury Hockey Club on Saturday for some U13 fixtures. In order for us to ensure that the games are well matched, we will be trying to involve as many boys as possible, with-out diluting the fixture too much. With that in mind, the afternoon will take the following format:

2.00 pm U13A & B Boys Triangular matches 2.00 pm U13 B & C Boys Triangular matches

Please note that in some cases, we may well be mixing some of the teams up, so we can match the teams up with Bury St Edmunds. All boys not involved will be having a normal coaching afternoon.

We look forward to a fun afternoon in glorious sunshine!

From the Sports Desk……. Boys Hockey 1st VII v Framlingham Prep Won 1-0 The boys were very much looking forward to this game, having lost to them earlier this term 2-3 in a very close game, they were keen to show improvement. OBH dominated possession, running the Framlingham forwards around the park, creating space and therefore chances. With the score 0-0 at half time both sides felt that they were in the game, and the second half started at break neck speed. It was hugely pleasing to see that our new recruits from the 2nd VII made a really positive contribution, and that the boys played as a team, supporting each other. With ten minutes to go, a well worked set piece provide OBH with the breathing space they needed, and they managed to hold on to the final whistle. Huge improvement from the boys but still plenty of work to do. 2nd VII v Framlingham Prep Lost 1-2 After a really positive start to the term, the boys were keen to extend their unbeaten run. OBH were slow to start, Framlingham Prep pushed hard and dominated possession for the early part of the game. Our structure was sloppy at times, we lost our shape which inevitably put pressure on our defence. We did find our rhythm in the first half, creating chances, but the ball seemed destined to run wide! Framlingham scored first, but the 2nd VII equalised with a well worked short corner. Both sides had multiple chances to secure the game, but it was the Framlingham Prep boys that were able to find the back of the net before the final whistle.

3rd VII v Framlingham College Won 8-0 The 3rd VII carried on the good work of last week with a lovely game of fluid hockey. It would be very easy to single out the starting forwards of Harry Bidwell, Tom Harper-Smith & Freddie Raymond for scoring lots of goals in an 8-0 victory – well done indeed! – but the most pleasing aspect of the victory was the team work displayed. It was thrilling to see the ball being worked from one corner of the pitch to another with patience and confidence before launching the killer blow when an opportunity was spotted. Oliver Stanton had a great game down the right, constantly threatening the opposition D whilst Sam Harrison and George de la Rue were resolute and totally dependable at the back. The boys also changed their positions during the game, which gave them the chance to learn different skills in all parts of the pitch; as we want to develop hockey players who are multi-dimensional. Alex Milner was also terrific in goal and he relished the chance to dominate his D and pull off several fine saves. Another pleasing win, but still lots of effort and practice required as there are tough games to come. 4th VII v Framlingham College Draw 2-2 Despite the cold the 4th VII had a slow start against a well organised Framlingham Prep team. The boys who began to link passes together and tighten up in defence. They held off attack after attack and began to gain possession and start to play more in the opposition half of the pitch. Eventually a clever pass from Ben Hearn set Oscar Rook free and he converted the chance to make it 1-1 at half-time. After twenty minutes of exciting prep school hockey Charlie Bidwell was tireless in midfield and began to release the forwards and OBH began to threaten more and more. Eventually a well-worked passing move freed up Jasper Ackroyd-Cooper in space who ‘roofed’’ one into the top net with a screamer of a shot. Unfortunately, less than a minute later 2-1 to OBH had become 2-2. OBH pressed in the final minutes and almost scored at the end, but a draw was a fair result. Special mention to Tom Gregory and Sam Collins who were the bedrock of our defence and helped to launch so many counter-attacks.

5ths VII v Framlingham Prep Lost 4-2 Despite losing 4-2, the 5th team showed glimpses of good hockey. Our two goals came from quick passing and movement off the ball, something we need throughout the game, not just occasionally! We conceded four soft goals due to lack of communication and defensive nous. Signs of promise but plenty to work on ahead of the next match, also against Framlingham, next week. 6ths VII v Framlingham Prep Won 5-1 The boys came away with a great win against Framlingham Prep School. Simple effective hockey was played throughout the game, and the one-two passing between all of the team was fantastic to see. Well done, boys on an excellent result!

Colts Colts C Lost 2-1 OBH deserved huge credit for their efforts in this fixture as they dominated possession in the first half. It was a shame they just could not turn the pressure in to goals. Shooting aggressively from a strong position needs to be the way forwards! Despite limited opportunities, the opposition scored twice, with two excellent individual goals. OBH continued to create chances and deserved to pull one back in the second half. Unfortunately, time was against them and Framlingham finished as 2 – 1 winners on the day. Colts D Won 0-2 What a great result for the D team. The two sides were evenly matched but the OBH players made life difficult for the opposition by shadowing the ball carriers and making some well-timed block tackles. With possession, OBH moved the ball decisively up-field and created some good attacks. Their efforts paid off when they managed to find the back of the net on two occasions. It must be said that the first goal impressed all the players, coaches and spectators alike – a stunning 360 rotation and quick pass across the ‘D’, followed by a skilful, first time slap in to the corner of the goal. One that will remain in the memory for many years to come! Well done to all the team – a thoroughly well-deserved victory.

The U9’s had their first training afternoon with St Felix on Friday, despite the hard pitches and chilly weather, we managed to get some competitive touch rugby going. We have been concentrating on handling the past few weeks, and the boys showed how much they had come on in such a short space of time. We look forward to welcoming St Felix and South Lee next Friday, 3rd February and hope that we can venture into the realms of contact rugby next week, in anticipation for our first contact session. This was the U8’s first game of competitive tag rugby. They began the game full of energy and enthusiasm which was great to see. St. Felix scored a few

quick tries, however the boys kept going, and in the last ten minutes really showed that they could compete well with great running with the ball, and some fantastic passing. St. Felix came away with the win however, the boys did very well in their first performance. Well done boys!

Girls Sport…. U13A Netball v Framlingham Prep School Lost 9-5 Framlingham travelled to a very chilly OBH on Wednesday for a very exciting match! Fram started well leading 4-0 after the first 10 minutes but positional changes in the second quarter, proved effective and at one point the girls pulled back to within 2. The score at half time was 7-3 to Fram but the OBH girls worked hard to pull it back. The second half was impressive and a much improved Performance; had they started like this the result would have been different. OBH showed excellent defending throughout the entire court and made numerous tips and interceptions. We now need to work on having more opportunities in the attack. OBH restricted Fram to just 2 goals in the second half which resulted in a fantastic game of netball. The final result was a 9-5 loss but lots of positives and fantastic team work! U13B v Framlingham Lost 16-5 It was an extremely cold and damp afternoon on the netball courts when OBH hosted Framlingham. The U13B side started well netting 3 in the first quarter to Fram’s 4, and the match was fairly even-sided. However, as substitutions were made in the 3rd and 4th quarters, it was clear that Fram had some excellent shooters and goal attacks who netted everything they put up. It was a good game however, the final result does not reflect the spirit of the game which went from one end to the other keeping every-one very busy and warm! Final score was a loss to OBH of 16-5. Never mind girls, you tried your best.

v Framlingham Prep & Ipswich Draw 6-6 v Framlingham Prep Won 11-5 v Ipswich The U11s kicked off their netball season in a fashion that showed they meant business; working hard from the onset and showing true commitment. Against Framlingham Prep we led the first quarter, then Fram came back hard in the second, working hard to keep our shooters out of the circle, and were able to bring the score level. This pattern repeated itself and our shooters worked their way through and around. The game finished with a great 6 all draw.

This was swiftly followed by a match against Ipswich School and despite the incredibly cold conditions the team demon-strated good movement around the court, with focus on keeping possession of the ball and good work around the circle. We finished strongly and the final score was an 11-5 win. A fantastic start to the season, well done. A big thank you to ALL of the parents who support the tennis programme at OBH. Tennis has never been more popular. Here is one such example: 26 little ones coming to Pre-prep tennis club on a Tuesday after school.... the coaches are certainly kept on their toes!

obh mail And finally…… With an ever increasing number of children taking advantage of one of our boarding options, we have been taking a thorough look at how we can provide the best possible boarding provision in the coming years. The current programme of refurbishment of the dormitories is one part of this. The next phase is to open a Junior Boarding House, this will allow us to provide facilities and an environment aimed specifically at younger children.

I am delighted to announce that this will open in September. We have decided to use the entire top floor of the main house which had been unused for several years until recently, and create a bespoke junior house. The existing rooms in the centre will be knocked into one, creating a cosy communal area where the children will come together for stories, games, reading and hot chocolate each evening. This will also be the base for the houseparent’s and matrons. On either side of the common room will be a girl’s wing and a boy’s wing. All of the dormitories will be completely refurbished with new bath-rooms and showers being installed at either end. The result will be an incredibly special environment, perfect for those younger children taking their first steps in boarding.

I am equally delighted to announce that Emma Easdale will be the houseparent for the Junior Boarding House. Her dedication and experience in nurturing our younger children make her the ideal ‘house mum’. She will be putting the children to bed throughout the week so that the children will have continuity of care knowing who will always be looking after them. Emma will also be a comforting and reassuring presence for all the parents, happy that their child is in such safe hands.

The boy’s and girl’s houses will then be tailored towards the older children in Years 6 and above. Rob and Jen Miller will continue to run both of these houses. The ongoing refurbishment plan for the boys and girls houses continues unaltered.

Work on the new Junior Boarding House will commence in the Easter holidays and will continue throughout the summer to ensure everything is ready to welcome the first children in on 6th September.

These developments allow us to keep the great strengths we have in boarding but also to build on them and offer a significantly improved boarding environment for all of our children.

Exciting times!

Term Dates Having been in post for two years now and run through six termly cycles, I feel there is a need to tweak our future term dates. Although our overall length of academic year is not dissimilar to other full boarding schools, I feel that by returning to school on Monday evenings, rather than Wednesday evenings each term, we can claim back six academic days over the course of the year, without adversely affecting family holiday plans. I know that parents value holidays spent with their children but I feel this move will benefit all concerned and makes our academic year more balanced overall. The changes will take effect from the Lent term 2018—this is the first term that we had yet to confirm dates.

Enjoy your weekend.
