Cleveland ClinicFounded in 1921, Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit, multispecialty academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Today, 2,700 physicians and scientists practice in 120 medical specialties and subspecialties, annually recording more than 3 million patient visits and more than 70,000 surgeries.
Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, with 50 buildings on 180 acres in Cleveland, Ohio, includes a 1,300-bed hospital, outpatient clinic, a research institute, specialty institutes, and supporting labs and facilities. Cleveland Clinic also operates more than a dozen family health centers; nine regional hospitals, one affiliate hospital, a rehabilitation hospital for children, Cleveland Clinic Florida, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, and Cleveland Clinic Canada. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), a multispecialty care hospital and clinic, is scheduled to open in 2012.
The Lerner Research Institute is home to all laboratory-based, translational and clinical biomedical research at Cleveland Clinic. With 700,000 total square feet of research space, more than 1,200 scientists and support personnel collaborate with clinical researchers to unravel the mysteries of disease. It is one of the leading NIH-funded research institutes in the nation.
Now in its seventh year of existence, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University offers all students full-tuition scholarships. The program graduated its first students as physician-scientists in 2009.
Cleveland Clinic is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in America by U.S.News & World Report, and our heart and heart surgery program has been ranked No. 1 since 1995.
Cleveland Clinic InstitutesIn 2007, Cleveland Clinic restructured its practice, bundling all clinical specialties into integrated practice units called institutes. An institute combines all the specialties surrounding a specific organ or disease system under a single roof. Each institute has a single leader and focuses the energies of multiple professionals onto the patient. From access and communication to billing and point-of-care service, institutes are improving the patient experience at Cleveland Clinic.
The Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute is designed to meet the unique and changing medical needs of women from adolescence to mature adulthood. Our team offers coordinated and supportive care for the problems that affect women’s lives, from breast cancer to infertility, incontinence, pelvic floor disorders and more.
Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute2
Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health InstituteThe Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute is committed to providing world-class care to women of all ages. The institute offers a full complement of subspecialty services that fall within the field of women’s health, from general gynecologic care and screenings for breast disorders, to complex oncologic surgery for breast and gynecologic malignancies. Services are available on the main campus, as well as in family health centers and hospitals throughout the region. In 2010, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was the top-rated program in Ohio and ranked number four nationally by U.S.News & World Report.
The Center for Specialized Women’s Health in the Gault Women’s Health and Breast Pavilion offers leading-edge interdisciplinary women’s health services and serves as a national model to other hospitals. The Center for Specialized Women’s Health was made possible in part through the generous support of an Avon Foundation grant in 2002. Staff specialize in addressing problems that are of special concern to women including: menstrual disorders, non-hysterectomy alternatives, perimenopause and menopausal disorders, uterine fibroids, severe PMS/PMDD, menopause hormone therapies, postmenopausal osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, hormonally induced depressive disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome and female sexual dysfunction. The Center currently boasts the highest number of North American Menopause Society (NAMS) credentialed menopause experts in the country. Services include saline infusion sonography, office hysteroscopy, colposcopy, outpatient endometrial ablations, IV reclast infusions and on-site bone densitometry, as well as access to leading-edge breast care in the adjoining Breast Center. Additionally, the Center for Specialized Women’s Health has a successful women’s health fellowship training program. The Center offers shared medical appointments and provides consultation to outside medical institutions interested in developing or expanding interdisciplinary women’s health service lines. Additionally, the Center for Specialized Women’s Health manages Speaking of Women’s Health, a national program that educates women to make informed decisions about health, well-being and personal safety for themselves and their families.
The staff in the Breast Center includes breast surgeons, medical breast specialists, and radiologists who focus on breast cancer screening and surgical treatment, advanced diagnostic breast imaging, and high-risk screening and prevention. Breast surgeons and medical breast specialists collaborate in the main campus Breast Center, Beachwood Breast Center, Strongsville Breast Center, and at Fairview Hospital, with screening mammography available at these locations in addition to all of our family health centers.
To offer patients state-of-the-art surgical options, our Breast Center staff includes a team of microvascular breast reconstructive surgeons who specialize in DIEP free-flap reconstruction – a type of reconstruction offered in only a select group of centers worldwide. Additionally, Cleveland Clinic’s breast MRI program has set
3Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute
the standard for breast MRI in staging and high-risk screening. We offer dedicated fellowships in breast surgery, medical breast disease, breast imaging and women’s health.
Physicians in the Section of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery/General Gynecology have a wide variety of subspecialty interests, including urogynecology and vaginal reconstructive pelvic surgery, advanced operative endoscopy, genital fistulas and bowel disorders, women’s health, menopause and geriatric gynecology, pelvic pain, menstrual disorders and acupuncture for chronic pain. The professional staff aspires to remain at the forefront of advanced gyneco- logic surgery as national leaders in surgical innovations and experience. The section offers one of the first American board-approved Urogynecology/ Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery fellowships in the country, and it represents one of the only urogynecology fellowship programs in the Midwest. Additionally, the section is a member of the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network, a network of doctors, nurses and researchers from across the United States who engage in collaborative research to improve the care and daily lives of women with pelvic organ prolapse and bladder and bowel control problems.
The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Center provides a multidisciplinary approach to evaluation and treatment of patients with a variety of pelvic floor disorders. Cleveland Clinic’s Menstrual and Fibroid Treatment Center provides advanced care for women who are experiencing menstruation dysfunction and symptoms from uterine fibroids.
In the Section of Gynecologic Oncology, the staff employs a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive management of gynecologic malignancies, incorporating surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and biologic therapy. We offer all innovative surgery, including robotics. We have a popular Gynecologic Oncology fellowship program. Our oncologists are members of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, the only national cooperative study group devoted exclusively to the investigation of gynecologic malignancies. Extensive clinical trials of the newest treatments and techniques are available. The section also encompasses the Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry and provides complete treatment of pre-invasive lower genital tract disease.
The Section of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology works in conjunction with the Department of General Pediatrics, managing the gynecological consultative and surgical care of pediatric and adolescent patients.
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Section physicians provide comprehensive evaluation for infertile couples. Treatments encompass all assisted-reproductive technologies, including artificial insemination, ovulation induction, intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection, in vitro fertilization and reproductive surgery,
Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute4
including microsurgery (sterilization reversal) and advanced endoscopic techniques for problems such as stage IV endometriosis. For maximum patient convenience, Cleveland Clinic’s Fertility Center has several locations throughout the area. In vitro fertilization retrievals and transfers are performed at the Fertility Center at Beachwood, while initial fertility consults and testing are available on the main campus, the Beachwood Fertility Center, the Fairview Fertility Center, Youngstown, and the Solon, Strongsville and Twinsburg family health centers.
Physicians and certified nurse-midwives in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine/Obstetrics Section provide three levels of obstetrical care: midwives offer a family-centered approach to low-risk prenatal care and delivery; general obstetricians provide care for low- and medium-risk pregnancies; and maternal/fetal medicine specialists provide diagnosis and treatment for more complicated high-risk pregnancies. Available services include genetic counseling, ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
The Fetal Care Center, launched in 2005, is a multidisciplinary team of perinatologists, neonatologists and pediatric surgeons whose goal is to achieve the best possible outcome in pregnancies complicated by complex congenital anomalies. Through collaboration and communication, we provide accurate prenatal diagnosis using state-of-the-art techniques such as high-resolution ultrasound, fetal MRI and fetoscopy, then apply that information in developing a management plan for pregnancy, delivery and newborn care.
