Obesity

A medical condition and disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems.

Symptoms

Exercise GuidelinesAwareness of psychosocial aspects of

obesity

Ensure client is socially and emotionally safe

Proper exercise selections, positions, and location

Use of self-myofascial release should be done with caution

Must engage in weight-supported exercise (cycling, swimming, or walking)

FITT ComponentFrequency ~ at least 5 days per week

Intensity ~ 60 – 80% of maximum heart rate. Use ‘Talk Test’ to determine exertion Stage I cardiorespiratory training to progress to Stage II

Time ~ 40 to 60 minutes per day, or 20 to 30 minute sessions twice each day

Type ~ resistance training and circuit-training

Contraindicated ExercisesHigh intensity exercises

Lifting heavier weights than they are able to
