MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 15, 1961, the entire 18-member U.S. figure skating team is killed in a plane crash in Belgium. The team was on its way to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships in Czechoslovakia. After the crash, an American woman (Peggy Fleming) would not capture Olympic gold until 1968, while a U.S. man (Scott Hamilton) would not do so until 1984.

THE BIBLE SAYS “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:12) “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” (Acts 13:38,39) “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” (Philippians 3:9) “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (I John 5:13)

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

www.bataviafamilydental.com

BACTERIUM LINKS GUM AND HEART DISEASES There has been a great deal of

discussion in recent years about the link between gum disease and heart disease. Now, researchers have found the culprit responsible for this link. The bacterium known as “Porphyromonas gingivalis” is well known to dentists and periodontists for causing the development of “periodontitis,” the serious form of gum infection that damages soft tissues surrounding the teeth and attacks underlying bone. Teeth are often lost as a result. Researchers recently found that P. gingivalis also changes the code of the genes in proteins responsible for boosting inflammation and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) in coronary arteries. This finding gives everyone more reason to conscientiously brush, floss, and guard against gum disease.

Periodontal disease is often silent, meaning symptoms may not

appear until an advanced stage of the disease. If you need answers to a dental problem, remember that at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL , we’re committed to your best interests. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule your next appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurance.

P.S. Studies previous to the one mentioned above found Porphyromonas gingivalis in the coronary artery plaques (cholesterol combined with fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin) of heart-attack patients.

On average, women have always lived longer than men.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost.

When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M.

ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract.

However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects.

While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibiotics- associated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S.

ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely.

High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure.

That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities.

The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A.

ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Loose Change Leads to Changed Lives

Due to extreme poverty, many people in Haiti give their kids away instead of watching them starve to death, with the hope that they will at least be fed. These innocent children often end up with people who don’t always care about their wellbeing.

In December, Burger King Restaurants at Eastview Mall in Victor and in LeRoy raised over $3,300 for Together for Christ Ministries and for Christian Action & Relief for Haiti.

Together for Christ Ministries is working to change the system that keeps too many Haitian children in domestic slavery. Its main campus includes a church, school, medical clinic and orphanage. Its purpose is “not just to feed, clothe and shelter, but also to love, educate and raise orphaned children according to biblical principles and Christian values.” The goal is for children to become responsible adults with the ability to provide for themselves, to help their neighbors and to serve their communities.

C.A.R.H.A is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to aid Haitian families “spiritually, mentally, financially and physically.” Its vision is to educate and to evangelize Haitian families, and to provide medical planning for them.

Burger King owner James Cammilleri and his wife Sarah are building a school in Haiti. “There is so much need in regards to feeding the children, and providing for school supplies and teachers’ salaries, etc.,” Cammilleri said, “that Sarah and I felt compelled to try and raise money for these two ministries that do not get a lot of support.”

Donations will be used to finish four new classrooms at one school, along with a

courtyard and a gate, and to provide for school supplies such as maps, skeletons and chalkboards. In addition, funds will allow for the purchase of cows and new bread ovens to help feed the orphans.

The Cammilleris, LeRoy and Eastview restaurant managers and their respective staffs wish to express their gratitude to all who donated over the holidays to support the fund drive for Haiti.

To learn more about Together for Christ Ministries or Christian Action & Relief for Haiti, or to donate, visit tfchaiti.com or carha.net.

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

It is seldom our good fortune to experience cares and problems that can be easily resolved by day’s end. However, it is best to make thoughtful and practical disposition of the cares of the day as quickly as possible.

There is nothing more wearing and depressing than to greet the new day with the handicap of yesterday’s problems carried over. Whatever the nature of the problem.... big or small.... make an effort to work it out, solve it and then dismiss it from your mind.

Prudent people have found peace of mind by arranging their own funeral services well in advance of need, in as much detail as they desire. This can include the cost and financing alternatives. Let us explain the advantages, without any obligation.

“To carry a care to bed is to sleep with a pack on your back…”

~ Yidish adage

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

Scrapbooks can help document your year

Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways.

Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was.

Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book.

The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire.

For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful.

• Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving.

• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you.

• Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers.

• Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful.

• Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents.

• Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book.

• Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.

Thanks to two Geneseo Walmart Shoppers for helping me when I dislocated my shoulder while checking out at Walmart. You both kept me calm even when I was in so much pain until my husband and the ambulance got to me. Thank you again for helping me.

Pay It Forward! Thanks to the man at Brockport Aldi’s who offered me his cart in the parking lot and wouldn’t accept the quarter. It made my day! Even small acts of kindness or a smile can make a big difference and brighten someone’s day. p.s. I left the cart unlocked for someone else to use after I was done shopping.

Thank you so very much to the person at the Lakeville Dunkin Donuts on Weds., 1/20, at approx. 7:10 am. I pulled up to the window to pay for my hot chocolate and my wife’s coffee. I was told it was paid for. This has never

“Happy Holiday”

(sometimes performed as

“Happy Holidays”) is a

popular song composed by

Irving Berlin during 1941

and published the following

year ... LONG before all this

political correctness started!

It was introduced by Bing

Crosby in the 1942 film

“Holiday Inn.” Commonly

regarded as a Christmas

song, it was performed on

New Year’s Eve in the film

and expressed a wish for the

listener to enjoy “happy

holidays” throughout the

entire year. The song helped

to popularize the phrase

“Happy holidays” as a

common greeting during the

Christmas and holiday

season in the United States.

I used to look forward to my

husband belting out “Happy

Holidays” (the only 2 words

he would sing) in his deep

voice every year until he

passed in 2012. BTW, I also

say Merry Christmas!

I live in a very nice

neighborhood, many

professionals, families, and

retirees. Unfortunately, on

trash day when there are

high winds forecast (there

are four different trash

companies servicing the

neighborhood, each with a

different pick-up day) many

residents just place the

recyclables on the curb the

night before. Due to the

prevailing winds, the

blowing trash that does not

get caught on neighbors’

fences ends up at the

entrance of the

neighborhood, creating a

‘royal’ mess. Please, if you

must put the trash out

early, secure it; put the

heavy glass on top or find

another solution. Please be

environmentally

responsible and stop

making the neighborhood

the town dump.

To the coyote hunters

who use dogs and drive

white trucks: I know your

dogs can’t read a posted

sign. But that does not give

you the right to disobey the

signs unless you don’t care.

I know it is cheaper to pay

fines then it is to own your

own land. If I catch you on

my land I will have you

arrested.

happened to me before. I was totally shocked. Thank you so much for making our day. I was so flabbergasted that I did not think to pay for the person behind me. However, I will be paying this forward at my next Dunkin Donut stop. You are such a nice person!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the care and compassion Dr. Gshrey and his staff gave my dog Nikki and me. Even though it was such a difficult time and a terrible thing to go through, it was made a little easier by such caring people. Thank you for being there for us.

Thanks to the Cal-Mum student who went to the concession stand for me at intermission for “Airline” on Saturday, January 23 in the p.m. He was very pleasant and did not mind standing in line. Teenagers are A - OKAY!

I am so happy to see one of our local supermarkets is helping us senior citizens in our golden years as we age with our math skills. Buy One Get One Free, Buy 2 get 3 Free, 2 for $10, 3 for $5, 10 for $10 and so on. Really makes you think. What does just 1 cost?

Home Design Tips

Layering unique patterns and textures in the home is a

quickly growing trend. Keep your space harmonized, yet

distinct, w ith the tips outlined below.

An empty wall holds endless potential. If the room is small,

expand your space with a mirror collage featuring a variety of

shapes and varnishes. Showcase your favorite wallpaper in a

large frame for a beautiful living room backdrop. Art fans

should collect a variety of frames in different finishes and

styles to create a “ living room gallery” featuring a beautiful art

display.

From urban-loft to chic farmhouse, it’s important to choose a

faucet that matches your individual style and offers an

enhanced user experience. The kitchen is the perfect setting to

feature products that tout high-design and innovative

technology.

Choosing pillows isn’t always easy. Certain textures

complement each other better than others. For example, linens

and wool tend to look better with woven fabrics while shiny

and matte fabrics are best kept separate.

Layering is a design tactic that fashion and interior designers

use to make a statement. Start w ith a flat, neutral rug as your

foundation and add a smaller, accent rug on top. Whether

cowhide or a geometric print - choose a similar color scheme

and play with the positioning by placing the top rug at a

purposeful angle.

When thinking about your space, it’s important to remember

that design inspiration can be found anywhere. Check out

antique shops or thrift stores for hidden treasures. When

traveling, visit flea markets and local art fairs. Transform an old

object like a rustic slab of wood into a glossy countertop for

your kitchen island.

Layering textures and patterns, combining modern with

rustic - blending home design can result in a truly

transformative space that captures your individual style.

Easy ways to improve workplace communications

Lack of communication at work can result in low employee morale and an uncomfortable work environment. Proper communication is vital to a healthy company. Otherwise, an atmosphere of discomfort might develop among employees. There are different steps to take to improve workplace communication and keep a business running smoothly.

- Supervisors must be accessible. Instead of setting down the law of the land, supervisors should have an open-door policy and welcome suggestions or even complaints without repercussions.

- Hold staff meetings. Staff meetings enable everyone to come together and voice their opinions. Meetings also serve to let employees know their opinions are important.

- Conduct frequent staff reviews. Supervisors should regularly meet with employees and give the employees the opportunity to talk about issues that may be important to the staff or themselves. It also allows a boss to understand what each staff member does and if there is room for improvement.
