AboutAt 225,282 gross registered tons, Oasis of the Seas i s the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship on the sea. It spans 16 decks, 24 passenger elevators, 2,700 state rooms and 7 distinctly themed neighborhoods and can accommodate 5,400 guests at double occupancy.

The Oasis of the Seas, which made its inaugural voyage on December 5 2009, is maintained by a crew of 2,165 members from over 71 countries.

The ChallengeWhen building the largest cruise ship ever at sea, many challenges had to be overcome when it came to lighting design and usage.

The challenge was to find a solution that would withstand the harsh environment of the ocean better than that of traditional lighting. It was equally important to find a way that would lower energy demands on the ship’s generators and reduce lighting maintenance requirements.

Additional requirements were to provide lighting that was dimmable and also produce light with consistent color and tones. The goal was to create a warm atmosphere for passengers to enjoy.

“We wanted to improve on earlier performance whilst at the same time ensuring that the ambience would be as good as or even better than before,” says Svein Medhaug, electrical superintendent at Royal Caribbean International.

The SolutionLED lighting was the definitive choice to meet these requirements.

LED Source® worked to incorporate LED lighting into the 7 themed neighborhoods: C e n t r a l P a r k , B o a r d w a l k , R o y a l Promenade, Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa, Fitness Center and the Youth Zone.

Other areas included the stunning three-story oceanfront Aqua Theatre.
